Lol This is a different singer. David Palmer did the lead vocals on this song and "Brooklyn (Owes the Charmer Under Me)". He was hired to sing live because Donald Fagen had bad stage fright. Fagen also didn't feel he had a good singing voice so they tried David Palmer on a couple of songs on the album. I also heard the record executives felt Fagen's voice wasn't commercial enough which is another reason why Palmer was hired. But Palmer's soulful voice was perfect for this song. On youtube, look up "Do It Again live" and you'll see the band on a 1973 episode of The Midnight Special with David Palmer on lead vocals. Not the best looking guy at the time but he had a great voice. He was only with the band for roughly a year or so before it was decided Fagen would sing on everything going forward.

Yeah, the vocalist on this track is David Palmer...This was back on Steely Dan’s debut album, when they were more of a permanent band. Then, on their following albums, due to the lack of touring, some original members left, leaving the founding Members Walter Becker (guitar) and Donald Fagen (vocals and keyboards)

You're correct: Unlike 'Do It Again' (and unlike most Steely Dan songs), 'Dirty Work' is not sung by keyboardist/composer/leader main vocalist Donald Fagen, but by transient co-lead singer David Palmer - who joined the band mid way through the recording of 'Can't Buy A Thrill', mostly to handle lead vocals live on their upcoming very first national tour, since back then Donald Fagen was still insecure about his ability to handle all lead vocals live. David Palmer's tenure w/ the band was short and he left sometime in early 1973, before they released their sophomore effort, 'Countdown To Ecstasy'.

Yes! They are a New York band originally, as Donald and Walter met at Bard College. The band was formed in NY and eventually recorded in LA later in their career. Many songs / albums have an LA vibe especially Aja and the album before, Royal Scam. Not one bad song in their repertoire, I guarantee.

Most of the album had lead vocals done by Donald Fagen. But Dirty Work and Brooklyn (Owns The Charmer Over Me) were sung by David Palmer and Midnight Cruiser was sung by the drummer, Jim Hodder.

Yeah, David Palmer has a great Voice for SD... and I think they should have kept him around for a while. His back up vocals were good, too... a different feel than the female backup singers he always used after that.

I remember reading in their biography "Reeling In The Years" (1994) that David Palmer left the band after an embarrassing "wardrobe malfunction" caused by his extremely tight jeans while performing live.

1:32 Not sure what the "last song" was but this prolly is a different singer. There was no lead singer in Steely Dan. They would go to great lengths sometimes to find the right vocalist for whatever they were working on. Sometimes going through several before finding the right one.
