Maybe this has already been commented below, but this song was built from an "assignment" that Kanami gave her bandmates to each come up with part of a song... which she then put together to create "Blooming." This is probably one of the main reasons that it seems to shift between so many different sections.

Yes! You are correct! Miku started as the singer, though her voice didn't didn't lend itself well to such a Hard band, but she always envisioned dual vocals anyway. Rather than hire a Rhythm Guitarist they found Saiki working for the same Agency as them. Miku then droped back to a support role for vocals and had Kanami teach her guitar to fill out their sound. In the beginning you can see the guitar is just a prop like in 'Thrill'. Kanami records both parts and Miku learns her's well enough to play LIVE. Once Kanami wrote a part she knew was going to be too hard for Miku to play. So she wrote another song that would help Miku get her skill level up to the point she could tackle that first song the next time. Miku doesn't even really like playing guitar, but she will do anything it takes to see her creation succeed. She's not just Rhythm Guitar and Backing Vocals. She is Founder, Spokes-Pigeon and the Lyricist. Miku & Kanami are Words & Music.

"So many intricate parts...and they play it on a dime" Yep, that's Kanami's (lead guitar) songwriting for you, plus the whole band's dedication to practicing and perfecting their songs to a very high degree (they have a band camp for a few weeks before touring). Yet they always smile and laugh and have fun when they play their songs live. PS Thanks for the 'subbtitles can be moved' tip!

For those who saw BAND-MAID's MV for the first time... ① Interesting costume, I'm sure someone else is playing the instrument ② Hey? Nice song, someone with talent must have contributed the song ③ Oh my... I like guitar riffs, who taught me that? ④ Huh? This bass is funky! My favorite! yes! ? Can you play jazzy bass too? ⑤ Yes! This drum fill... oh my god! oh! Isn't the guitar solo cool! I like the guitar in the back! Vocals are great too! ⑥…The song is over! ! Oh my god, I have to listen to it again to enjoy it! You are past that stage. It was a lot of fun and a good reaction. Please listen to "ON SET".

3:05 - They're talking about the Netflix assassin movie, Kate (2021). Band-Maid's Blooming was playing on the radio when Kate steals a overly-neon lit car and chases the bad guys through the streets of Tokyo. BM also makes a cameo at a concert and performs "Choose me' when Kate enters and looks for someone. Definitely worth a watch to see BM in action!

Listen to it again! The guitar solo is awesome but listen to the drums and bass during it. Actually that's almost always good advice for Band-Maid. I think your story about Misa playing leads on bass may be a bit revisionist. I think it's mostly her personality and style of play. If you spend enough hours reading translated print interviews, (I don't know what kind of sick fan-boy would do that.) Kanami says she forms the structure of the bass parts and turns the details over to Misa to compose, similar with Akane and drums. The newly released live version of "Puzzle" would probably hit you guys pretty good. "Onset", of course but also "Play" official live, so many _moments_ . Great job, Chris and Sam, thank you!

I agree. I think it's time to put to rest the "Miku is an amateur guitarist" trope. She's played rhythm in dozens and dozens of their songs in hundreds and hundreds of live performances. You are right that Miku, the rhythm guitar and background singer was just a guitar beginner in the early days. She in fact formed the band, and pushed the maid theme. She envisioned it as four people, with her as the singer. She quickly realized that the other three were masters of their craft, but her voice wasn't quite up to star quality. So they added the fifth member as singer, and Miku switched to background vocals and background guitar. The lead guitarist writes most of the music, and Miku writes most of the lyrics.

Pause when you need to, most of us enjoy hearing your thoughts about the music. In case someone hasn't mentioned this yet. This song was homework from Kanami, the lead guitarist and primary composer for the band. She told the others to write a part for a song and she would work them all together into one song. And Blooming is the result. And if you haven't figured out yet the Ladies don't stay in one particular genre, instead they combine all genres into their own style/genre. TO really hear the dichotomy of Band-Maid, watch the double Live video of Manners and Black Hole. Manners is a bluesy classic rock style song where the bass solos underneath the guitar solo ala Townshend & Entwistle then Black Hole is what I consider part of the Ladies "Ferrets on Drugs" songs, and Black Hole being Ferrets on Crystal Meth. If you are interested in their other Ferret songs, they are Rinne - Ferrets on Adderall, Different - Ferrets on Speed, and No God - Ferrets on Uppers.

I think you got the story about the lead guitarist a bit wrong lol- unless i misunderstood you. To be clear Its Miku the rythmn guitarist / 2nd vocals (lyricist and frontman) who had zero guitar experience when they started. Kanami the lead guitarist (who rarely sings) is an amazing guitarist and was good when they started. Saiki the lead singer doesnt play an instrument. Miku formed the band - she had previously been lead singer in an idol band that didnt take off and was intending to be the singer for BM but she quickly realised her voice didnt suit the type of music she was wanting them to play so they found Saiki after playing together just a couple week. And instead of just being a 2nd vocal, Kanami offered to teach Miku guitar so she could become the rythmn guitarist and yes in their early days Miku could only play very simple stuff ofcourse, and they had Misa do more than a bass normally would to help fill in the sound yes. And Kanami would play Miku's stuff in the studio. Not that Misa does less now Miku is good on rythmn guitar :) The sound they have developed will always have bass and drum far more featured and used than most bands. These days Miku has become very good at playing rythmn guitar! and plays her own stuff in the album recordings. Kanami still pushes her to develop - tho she says Miku can do some stuff better than she can! But she isnt like top tier amongst all the bands in the world like Misa and Akane are :) (and Kanami too especially taking to composing into account).

Yes, Kanami has said that she can't do the triplets that Miku does in Black Hole to tempo, like Miku does. She has said that Miku can pick and strum faster than she can, but Miku can't fret as fast nor as accurately as she can. Part of that I think is with Kanami being a pianist first, she isn't quite used to such small finger movements that rapidly. Which may be why she prefers sweep and trem picking as much as she does. Miku didn't already have 18 years of piano training to overcome like Kanami did, so she could learn the skills fresh without the bad/imperfect habits.

It's always great to see more musicians reacting to Band-Maid. I'll leave song recommendations to the other madiacs, but maybe some un-solicited advice for your reactions. Since you are musicians, and even though the majority of us aren't... we love to hear you geek out about the music. If you want to talk about time signatures, chord progressions, melody choices, etc. We love to hear it. The more you can explain to us why we love this music, the better. Don't worry about pausing, or even re-playing parts of the song that you find interesting or impressive. We've all heard these songs 100s of times, and if we wanted to listen to it without interruptions, we wouldn't be watching a reaction. The only exception for this is solos, try to wait for the end of a solo to pause, and then go back and replay it a second time if you want, because who doesn't want to hear Kanami shred multiple times? :) Keep up the great work, and enjoy the journey that is Japanese Rock music.

Love your guys videos. I really like that you aren't going to burn out on too many BAND-MAID videos too soon and understand some comments need to be taken with an editorial eye haha When you do get around to the, I'd suggest the latest three drops. Unleash, Influencer and especially From now On (Instrumental). Some really interesting concepts in all three.

Great observations of the song. This band has a Pigeon, Gorilla and a Pet. Also included is an Ice Princess and a ninja bass assassin. Japanese name form: Sir name, given name. We know sir names of everyone but the bass player Kobato Miku - Rhythm Guitars, backing, co-lead occasional lead vocals, main lyricist, and band founder. Nickname Kuruppo or Small Pigeon. Often referred to as just Pigeon. Founder of band came up with main concept of band. Noted for her red rose, sparkling anime like personality. While working at Maid Café decided to be a rock star. Tōno Kanami - Lead guitars and main composer. Pet of the band nicknamed Mincho. Affectionate personality with crush on all other members especially Saiki. Hirose Akane - Drums, leader of band, most normal of group. Nickname Gorilla because she love bananas and is very strong. Atsumi Saiki - Lead vocal, occasional lyrics. Nicknamed ice princess as she is tsundere by nature. Misa - Bass. Known as the ninja bass assassin or barefoot ninja bass assassin. Originally a four piece with Miku on lead vocals. After a few shows Miku decided that her voice lacked the oomph for hard rock music. Demoted herself to backing and co-lead vocals. Saiki answered an advert to be the fifth member. Known to the label, they knew she would not be happy to wear the maid uniform. Miku did not tell her about the maid outfits. At a practice before a couple concerts, Miku held up an outfit in front of Saiki. Saiki asked, "What's that?" Miku replied, "It's what you wear." Saiki protested, "I'm not wearing that." Miku talked her into wearing the outfit and saying if she didn't like it they would find someone else. Needless to say, Saiki bought into the idea but refused to wear the apron. As the story was related on a Japanese morning show Saiki stated, "That is how I was deceived by a Pigeon." At this point they were 1 guitarist, 1 bassist, 1 drummer and 2 vocalists. After playing a few servings to their Masters and Princesses (from maid café culture) Miku thought they needed a second guitar to fatten the sound. Three options were thought of. Bring in a sixth member, have Saiki learn guitar or Miku would learn guitar. Saiki was having none of it with guitar. Miku didn't want a sixth member. That left her to learn to play guitar. Her instructor? Kanami. At first, Miku hated the playing because of the initial pain in breaking the fingers in. But she was a real trooper and stuck with it. In the early days of her guitar playing she used the guitar as a bit more of decoration. But with practice, each successive record and tour she has improved and is now an excellent rhythm player singing, dancing, jumping and playing at the same time. Well done Miku and Kanami. Misa's full name must be "Misa Misa Misa." That's from hearing Miku in her omajanai time or magic spell time during a concert. 😂 Magic spell time is from Japanese maid café culture that Miku brought to Band-Maid. There is a whole lot more to learn and appreciate about this wonderful group of talented artists. Not sure if others agree, but to me they are the Japanese Beatles. Well done Miku. You are a rock star. Well done Band-Maid, you are going to dominate the world with your music. World Domination!

Think you are right. Misa did filling at the beginning because Miku did not play very well at this times. But she has improved so much....we are waiting now for her first solo. 😄 But Misa still does what Misa does...playing Bass like a leadguitar. This band is special.

For me, "Blooming" has EVERYTHING I love about The Maids...cranked to 11. Awesome in-the-pocket drum work, a prominent and creative, wondering bass line, KILLER guitar leads, crunchy rythym guitar, great lyrical content, and the HARMONIES (holy s...akura bloom)! It's God tier stuff. Thanks Gents! Love your content, so I'll just drop this here: If there's a "Reaction Hall of Fame", your reaction to Sokoninaru's "Tenohira De Odoru" belongs in it! 🕊

I love that Tyler Larson (aka, Music is Win) has one of the top comments on this video. Shortly after it was released, he posted a video of himself commenting on 100 guitarists that his Twitter followers requested. Someone asked for his comment on Kanami, and since he hadn't heard of her before, he watched this video for research. The comment about driving in a car is a reference to the fact that this song was used in an action scene in the movie "Kate." The band also appeared as themselves in the movie playing "Choose me."

I didn't know about moving the CC either! One other piece of constructive criticisms from other of your reactions (and to be fair I am watching this now and do NOT know if you do it herein ...) but when you pause the video and then unpause - please, please, please move the mouse off the video so the red bar / vid pop-up doesn't remain. Thank you!! (finished - and you didn't do it here 🙂 ) As for Miku (Rhythm Guitar / Singer) , others will know the precise details, but when the band started she could not play the guitar. In Thrill (I believe you said you saw that one), it was basically a necklace for her. The video-people just thought it looked better having someone else with a guitar. In the intervening 10 years (!!!), Kanami (lead) has taught her well and Miku is a helluva rhythm guitar player now and she continues to push for more. She routinely adds little extras which also frees Kanami to do even more lead work. It's one reason you hear crowds go wild when Miku does cool and interesting things (including "battles" with Kanami) on stage, as we know how far she has come. Miku has busted her a** for this band. She envisioned it and put it together. She essentially replaced *herself* as lead singer and then learned how to play guitar. All for what is best for the band. That part always gets to me. I honestly can't think of anyone who decides to put together a band and then realize that the only skill they bring isn't good enough - so they replace themselves for the betterment, and then learn to do something else. I'm sure it happens. But I more hear that over time a band transitions from one skillset to the next. But in Miku/Band-Maid's case, it was just "Hmmm. This band is better than what I can bring. It needs a better singer than me. So let's get one." Wow.

(Not a fault ! ),but---can't help wanting much more of that (brief) harmony of vocals !---Miku-plus-Saiki is like some new and complex instrument !------can just imagine some song that consists about 50percent of that ! Maybe no one has told Saiki-and-Misa that they have discovered a new instrument ,along their way----their own 2 voices !

What you said about Miku is right or close any ways. It has freed up Misa to become more of a lead instrument and also give Akane on drums more freedom to move around within the song. Now ass Miku gets better as a player she is beginning to trade off with one of the other two. With them holding things down and her getting to move around a bit before switch back to that role.
