For those curious, "The Mara": "A mare (Old English: mære, Old Dutch: mare, Proto-Slavic *mara; mara in Old High German, Old Norse, and Swedish) is a malicious entity in Germanic and Slavic folklore that rides on people's chests while they sleep, bringing on nightmares."

Fun fact: the "static" between songs is a real Spirit Box (the radio device used to supposedly hear the dead speak) As for the songs between Bill's driving bass tone bringing that low end rumble, Mike's super tasteful solo (the only one in Spiritbox history) with the sweep arpeggios and Courtney's huge vocal run on the "razor blade eyes" just before the solo Mara Effect 1 is still one of their best songs imho.
@cyberia55

Muad Dib- You no longer need the weirding module! 😂 I agree with all, except I don’t think the static is an *actual* Spiritbox, I think it is simulated. The voice heard is too often the same voice, there’s never any bits of music popping in there, etc. Have you ever used one, or heard one in person? I have not, but I would expect the output of random frequency hopping to be more chaotic than this. Of course, I could be full of $#@&%. 😂

@@williamvangurp7696 That might make more sense. It just doesn’t sound to me like an actual *live* (recorded in real-time) Spiritbox. If they recorded one, then extracted the more “interesting” samples, the result could be what we hear in these tracks.

Yeah, The Mara Effect is epic! The journey the 3 parts take you on is just amazing. As a musician myself, Spiritbox is addictive. Any musician who listens to them pretty quickly hear's the diversity of this band. I'm 47 years old and have been playing music for 35 years. This band is doing things I've rarely heard or felt before except in bands that changed music.

By the way Ryan was just their touring drummer and I think Zev is now their official drummer, they have always been a 3-Piece, before Bill joined the band Mike would program the drums and bass and then do his guitar parts that was on their first EP called Spiritbox which the Mara Effect is on so all this was written by Mike and Courtney made the lyrics and melodies.

The Mara is old Nordic for nightmare, it was the Mara riding you in the night. I grew up with my grandparents in the 60's and when I was a child they used that, they said the Mara ( a female entity ) came and sat on you at night giving you nightmares. The word goes back and could be found in old Norse/ viking era, where I grew up was a very very small part of Sweden with one of the oldest dialect that goes back to old Norse. This area did then have a few thousands that spoke this dialect, today it's only a few hundred left. When my grandmother was alive she wrote a book every year teaching the dialect and it was used in school, now there is no one left doing it. Anyway, this song with Spiritbox is and has always been my favorite because it showcase their incredible musicianship and of course their awesome music. I love all their songs but as I said this is my favorite by far.
The early Spiritbox stuff is SO good.

They have never had a drummer who was part of the band. Mike writes all of the music including the drum parts. I get the impression that they really like Zev, but he is from the US so they haven't spent much time together in person as their first tour got cancelled early last year. They likely want to tour with him for a while before deciding whether to make him a member. Someone did do an orchestral cover of these 4 songs, I think with computer software. The band promoted it on their socials. It still has an epic vibe, just in a different way. You would probably enjoy it.

Hello, thank you for the video. I would like to see your reaction to the performances of Diana Ankudinova. This is a young singer, she has covers of famous songs, as well as her own songs.
This has to be one of the best music videos on KZread. The performance is immaculate and it's already a set of amazing songs. And there's something just extra about actually seeing it with your eyes. Part 2 is my favorite section, and part of it is because it has something unique in the sound. You mentioned that there might be a "folk" sound around this part and I think I've had a similar feeling, like it reminded me of some indie band. I thought I was just imagining it because I can't point to a specific song it reminds me off, but there's gotta be something buried in my subconscious. And even though I'm listening to them for the metal, I love the extra dimensions.

At this point, you probably already know about Courtney, Mike and Bill’s former bands, but probably know very little wboug Ryan’s former projects. Ryan drummed in Stutterfly and Secret & Whisper (edit: also Shreddy Krueger, I always forget about his most recent band). Definitely worth checking out, as they’re all unreal. This is actually three seperate songs and an interlude. There are two other songs that make up the EP that this is on.
