The song is based on the novel The name of the rose, by Umberto Eco but Arjen saw the movie with Sean Connery.

Ayreon is a wonderful project, if you want to react to something else from them I'd suggest you a more theatrical performance. The song is "Isis and Osiris" from the live "Into the Electric Castle and Other Tales"

Thank you for your review and welcome to the Antony Arjen Lucassen rabbit hole! As folks have mentioned, Aryeon is a project - every song, every album adds a little to the Ayreon story. Arjen also has other projects such as Star One, Guilt Machine, Stream of Passion and Supersonic Revolution. All are musically and conceptually different but all are a facet of symphonic/progressive rock/metal. For a gentler song, I would humbly suggest Valley of the Queens from the same Aryeon Universe concert - for something faster Fate of Man from the last Star One album - a song based on the first Terminator movie. I look forward to your dive into the music. Enjoy!

Outside main stream musicians and singers love to work with Arjen A Lucassen. Some serious names there too, Floor Jansen, Steve Vai... The live productions are perfect.. and the results are jaw dropping. Ayreon, Star One, and some other projects. FYI the most left background singer is Floor`s sister, Irene.

Yeah, I got hooked on Irene's voice in '04 on Ayreon's "The Human Equation", and it was mentioned in like a footnote... by the way, her sister is the lead singer of After Forever, and that's what led me to Floor's music. So many people only know her from Nightwish, but AE, and her other interim projects (ReVamp and Northward) still stand out on their own. So many singers get better as their career progresses, but she basically started at the top and has stayed there, lol. But as great as Floor is, Irene's works just seem to hit me harder. She's very under-rated given her incredible skill.

All the singers on these songs have their own bands including the backing vocals. Ayreon is a project

Not the song I would have chosen, but a great one nonetheless. For a Music Teacher's reaction, I'd have gone with something from "The Theory of Everything", the lineup there was one of the strongest to date, especially with Christina Scabbia, she hit it out of the park on that one. And the fact that the album story strongly features the mentoring relationship between a student and teacher is just a cherry on top. But that album needs to be heard in it's entirety. However, if selecting tracks from it, the title track "The theory of everything" which is twice reprised (parts 1-3) and evolves with the story is where I would start. They're all short enough to be played back to back as if it were one song. Though if you like Ayreon, some of Arjen's other projects are equally impressive. His side project "Guilt Machine" has a bonus track, a cover of Leonard Cohen's "The Stranger Song" was phenomenal. His other project "Ambeon" features a remarkable young singer, she was, I think, 14 at the time of recording. And his solo work, "Into the New Real" has some cool covers as well, but the original track "When pigs fly" is a lot of fun. Kind of an amusing peek into pop-culture in an alternate reality.

    Hallo, Ayreon isn't a band, it's a project.

I don't agree with this choice, but the musicianship is spot on. Young Girl needs a real Hero, Lester Young. Lady Day is a Hero.

If you're saying that - with your classical upbringing - you've studied a different style, then you've missed the essence of Ayreon (and all of Arjen's other projects). Arjen is very much relying on his classical training. That he uses it to compose rock or metal songs doesn''t mean that his style is different. Just that the genre is heavier in general than authentic classical music.

I’d have to listen again because to me I was more focused on his style that he used now. I only heard the band one time or maybe two so I don’t know them well which is why I do reacts to help me know musicians better

Ayreon albums are all heavily conceptual, so a song on its own, out of context, may seem like gibberish lyrics. Arjen Lucassen doesn't write "Ooohh, baby..." love songs. These are tight, technical prog-metal epics.
