Friends... here we are, back to Falling in Reverse.
My god these musicians have proven to be exciting and wonderful and Ronnie's take on this classic song is so well done... I don't even know what to say.
What a stellar and amazing this to break my silence from these videos.

    I agree. It’s sort of like phases of grief where the original makes you angry and want to mess everything up/lashing out, where the Ronnie version makes you feel it’s desperate plea. If you are interested Jacoby did a short documentary on the song and where it came from/why.

    The choral singer in me loves all the held notes. The modern folk singer part of me loves the little skips, cracks and flips he uses to add dynamics. I love the breathy bit but when he gets full, fold closure, WOW. And those few measures where he starts singing in the dome in that baritone bit, just sublime. I had never heard of Ronnie until a week or so when this video went viral. I'm seriously impressed. This guy is brilliant musically. I saw a clip where he shares the song with Papa Roach. Jacoby, I think that's his name, asks him about the piano line and Ronnie mentions it's actually a friend of his, so I'm not sure if he plays or not. If you watch the closeup on the hands playing the piano they are so graceful and lovely to watch. Can we talk about the strings? Especially the cello. Gor. Geous! I don't know anything about singing metal and screaming. The last couple of measures I was concerned that he was using his folds and hurting himself. But throughout the rest of the song, his screams were placed differently. Maybe the false folds? Idk. It's super cool though. While I'm a fan of 70s and 80s rock, I'm old!, Falling in Reverse is way outside of my wheelhouse. But after going down the Falling in Reverse rabbit hole I'm definitely a new fan. Thanks, for sharing your expertise.

    While not an expert on the scream techinques either, several vocal coaches both in and outsid the metal genre has many, many times noted how healthy all his metal voice effects are. So his singing is incredibly healthy and in no way endager his voice. So no need to be worried about that thankfully.

    I don't live in Australia and had never heard of Papa Roach. Since seeing this I listened to the Papa Roach original. As Anericans you hooked into music at whatever age you were and I am sure you have this song as one of your favourites. But Ronnie has recognised the power of the lyrics and I have studied up on Ronnie for a couple of years now. All his songs since he matured and stopped messing up his life truly reflect him and his internal demons and dialogue. I am in that depressed state at the moment so this reimagined version is to me very beautiful and despite what some say, sad heartbreaking songs can give comfort. There is a KZread clip of Ronnie playing this clip to Papa Roach (sorry I don't know the band members names) - and Ronnie is so nervously playing it to them for their approval. Ronnie is a complex man. And so very talented. You might pick up a little clue in that clip... This is so glorious.

    Both Papa Roach and Ronnie Radke have mastered this piece, but in different ways. Papa Roach's version is a piece of anger, outrage, frustration, and lashing out. Ronnie Radke's interpretation is one of anger, regret, despair, and a call for help. Each version stands on their own, but together they tell a story.

    Ronnie goes crazy with the piano in “the drug in me is reimagined”

  • @ScottLovenberg
    @ScottLovenberg11 ай бұрын

    Ronnie is one of those guys that's good at the instruments he doesn't play and immaculate on the ones he does play. Give yourself a treat: to see Ronnie's progression as a musician, listen to "The Drug in Me is You" recorded ten years ago after he had just gotten out of jail (he wasn't allowed to sing). He wrote it in jail and performed it right after he got out. A decade later he released his reimagined version of the song as a gift to his fans (he drops stuff all the time as appreciation); it's called "The Drug in Me Is Reimagined". You'll see him *really* play piano and the shocking improvement he's made as a musician, singer, composer and human. It's a full redemption arc. I should mention, he finished a song cut from one of the previous albums as an appreciation piece to the fans. He finished mixing and mastering the > 100 layers and released it. It's called "Carry On". He claims to have hundreds (and I believe it) of tracks in various stages of complete that were cut for various reasons. The track is better than the vast majority of singles that make monster albums. To reiterate, the stuff he throws away is AAA. He's got so much good material he can cut songs that would make a band's album and tour. More info than you needed, but to drive home the kind of musician who studies and hones his craft... A quick explanation of why Carry On was cut, at least as I've heard it through the grapevine. : I think he tossed Carry On after realizing he might have accidentally been influenced by My Chemical Romance because there's a slight similarity in a phrase of the lyrics that has strong resemblance to one of their songs on one of their more obscure albums (their best album, but by far least commercially successful concept albums, Danger Days). As I've heard he commented on his twitch stream one day when i wasn't watching that he didn't want it to look like he's ripping off a band he admires. He'll pay homage intentionally, but is very respectful of not releasing unintentional likeness.

    If i had to sum up this rendition in a word, it would be, "intentional". Every. Single. Bit. Is done with intent and executed brilliantly. And when it all comes together as a single art piece the whole is so much greater than the sum of the pieces.

    You should check out Falling in Reverse "The drug in me is you" and "The drug in me reimagined". First one is from 2011 then 10 years later he redid the composition but kept the exact same lyrics and it has a very different sound/feel. If you like those then there is "I'm not a vampire" and "I'm not a vampire (revamped)". You may want to do the original and the reimagined ones in the same reaction so you can more easily compare. This one is a "reimagined" version of Papa Roach's song "Last Report" from 20 years ago.

    You know you made a immortal song that will echo through history. When covers like this is build on it. Deconstruction music this way for me shows what songs will stand the test of time. There are many great songs. But sometimes it takes the most magical cover of a great song, to prove just how brilliant it really is, and make it last forever.

    Ronnie adds an element of elegant catharsis that's not present in the original. It permits him to convey the gravity of the lyrics more so than the original. No hate for Jacobe, he was younger, the 2000s were a different time... Yeah. But it's amazing how Ronnie can transform a loud edgy song, including his own older ones, into something with such timeless emotive artistry.

    I know I posted one message. But feel it should be said. The piano you hear is not him playing it. He has a guy who compose these reimagined songs for him. And someone in the production is playing the piano. I do believe he could play it though. But in terms of what you hear, and how its composed he have others to do that. He mention that in the video he has where he shows this to Papa Roach.
