Matteo Mancuso! Last year, it was a privilege to interview Matteo Mancuso. He someone who is as equally amiable as he is a great guitar player! When I first saw that he put out a video playing Giant Steps I didn't think much of it. Everybody was putting out a video of themselves playing giant steps. However, when I heard it… Thought I knew I needed to make a react video about it. Mancuso sounds as if Michael Brecker were playing the guitar.
In this guitar lesson, you will learn some of the lines and concepts behind what makes this solo an amazing piece of music.

One of the freshest improvs on "Giant Steps" I've ever heard, and as a former radio jazz DJ with 25 years of experience in a major market, I heard my fair share of them. Matteo is not only a Renaissance man of jazz and jazz-rock fusion but also one of the most tasteful and original music minds in those genres working today.

I generally avoid these 'reaction' videos like the plague, but something told me this one would be worth the listen. I mean, it's Matteo Mancuso and he's the heir apparent to all the great fusion players I've grown up listening to. Great commentary and not a bit overdone.

Well done, you win the award for kindest compliment! If you like this one, you should look at the Polyphia one where I say specifically that I don't "react" but… I actually TEACH! Reacts videos are really a pile of shite for the most part. As a matter fact, your comment is making me strongly consider ditching that word and using the word "teaches." The kid is super super great but I’d love to hear if he can play these things with a pick, no fingers included. I’ve been playing for 18 years and I’ve watched a few people already take up the challenge and play everything he plays, but with a pick. If you can learn his finger picking style then you can do it as easy as he can (that would be the mathematical aspect of it: 1+1=2) but how versatile is the boy? That’s what I want to see: that’s what makes a great guitarist- versatility. If the band you’re in tonight says ‘we’re doing country’ can you chicken pick? If they say ‘prog rock’ can you play like polyphia? If they say ‘Metal’ can you play like Dimebag or Vanhalen? There’s a lot more that goes into being the best than to just play one style that tickles my ears and makes me think you’re good. He’s AWESOME but is he the best?

Thank you for this analysis. I have really been impressed with Matteo’s playing as I have started following his playing in the last few years. Finally we have someone younger picking up and moving jazz guitar to a new level. This analysis was great. I have slowly been working though Giant steps over the years and love how the changes work I do not play with any of that speed but there are so many options to change voicing and move between these chords. Matteo has done some new things here which are very special. I recommend anyone to try and go through this song very slowly and just enjoy the sounds at whatever speed you can play . You have shared even more ideas Matteo’s ideas and your analysis are sparking some new ideas.

Pat Metheny on steroids... illustrious performance by Matteo...Soaked in every second of this 8 minute exhibit of exquisite playing and tone and your wonderful commentary and breakdown of this great solo with the immense cherry of transcription on top. You have a tremendous gift of finding these gems and delivering them to us in a humble and palatable fashion. It's videos like this that inspire guitar players to keep at it. @@streetwiseguitar5113 Video analysis is great. Definitely will create some do ideals on my end. Great guitar playing. But the comment makes a great point. The average a listener wants harmony, dynamics, smooth easy listening, hence smooth Jazz. Playing in a beer club will teach you that lesson fast. George Benson, Al Di Meola learned that lesson when they started communicating musically with the listener. I like the speed, pace as well. But put the right context.
