I believe that the fact that this video explains the creation (or rather revival) of the champion Varus that now basically consists of 3 souls trapped in one body might explain why this hook feels so cluttered and way too crowded. It might just reflect the state of their minds being forced to work as one now, slowly merging together without wanting that (at least one of them). Just my humble opinion though.

As a league fan I could say, this is my fav ever. I love the hook and how all those messy crowded sounds fit to the chaotic story of this particular champ, maybe getting to know the lore of the character would help you understand why they might create it this way. Even tho, I'm sad you didn't enjoy it as much I do every time, I really appreciate your insights on the technical aspects. It gives me a better build up perspective on music and the quality of it. Because I find it hard to believe riot, who consistently made songs that are good in general, would intentionally make a song messy to cater to a champion's lore. They have a track record of making songs consumable by almost everyone, so it would seem out of character for them to suddenly make a release that only people, who are really into varus' lore, enjoy. I, for one, think this was just a miss from them. A rare occasion, but riot does that some times.

The thing is, Joey doesn't need to love every song, there are gonna be tons of songs that millions of people adore and he just wont vibe with it and that's cool, much rather the honesty tbh

I kinda understand where you're coming from with the high pitch sound. Oddly on more average headphones the sound is very different. For me it has a very fast distinct wave form to it. It is still very high but its not just a constant pitch which I could see being offensive to some ears.

So, I noticed the same thing as Nato when this track first released, and honestly I had an immediate reaction to it as a hardcore Varus player back then: First, this recreated rendition of Varus involves three people--the two Ionian soulmates and the Darkin beneath the water--and another entity that is the Ionian war against Noxus. When I heard this I interpreted the song as the heavy drums being the ongoing war outside the temple, the dying vocal as the first Ionian dude literally dying, the overlying vocals being the Ionian dude trying to fight the overcoming doom and save his soulmate, and that high-pitched, overwhelming screech to be the Dark attempting to--and ultimately succeeding in--taking over the two to become Varus. I've always felt that it should be a chaotic mix, simply because of what it's portraying: One lover trying to save another, fighting both a war as well as against a demonic entity while STILL fighting against death. In a war, there's too much going on. In this video, there's too much going on. In the track, there's too much going on. Just as it should be, if you ask me. That's just me though, and maybe I was just thinking too deeply into the song. Still, I've always felt that this particular track told a story in itself.

Nah, fam. Good art should make you think of a lot things, ideas that could overwhelm you. I see where you are coming from. The disorder inside "Varus" reflects the war that essentially gave birth to him. 2 lovers escaping the grasp of war only to find another one that could either corrupt them or unite them fully. You can feel that from how chaotic and disorganized that hook sounds. It's as if two people banging on the same door with no coordination.

Finally dude! Been waiting a while for this one. I think this is my favorite song by riot for some reason I cant explain. Edit: Everyone is entitled to their opinions, but I love the harmonics in the hook. If you noticed after the hook to the dreamy part of the song, it's all supposed to be big and kinda cloudy, even the vocals. It's great that you are honest though, that's what makes this whole reaction thing true and interesting.

Joey, You gotta react to lights and shadow from league. The artist is Hiroyuki Sawano, the same guy who composed attack on titan. There are two versions though. the animated star guardian video and just the audio. There are some noticeable differences between the two but I hope you react to it. As always, your videos are great and they really put an insight as to the depth of what music really means and the detailed analysis is just outstanding.

Really nice reaction dude, honesty is something that I miss in some reactions, but you did really well on giving your opinion and what you didn't like about it. If I could recommend another League of Legends related song, there wouldn't be any left I think, BUT the themes of every champion are AMAZING in my opinion. If you ever start on doing these, I would highly recommend Jhin, Vi, Kindred and Camille. You know, i recently only discovered you and the fact that you said you don't like my favorite league song..... Earns you a sub. People don't value honesty enough and to me, it's huge. Can't wait to continue watching more form you man.

I agree with what a couple people said, this whole video was to tell the story of how two lovers and a being named a "Darkin" are joined together to make one being. A Darkin cannot live without a host, and usually ends up killing the host over time. The more determined the host is to survive with the power of the Darkin the longer they survive. Because the two lovers wanted to be together so bad they both betrayed their people and thus sentenced to death (their clans were rivals), the one took the other that was dying to the pool of life as he heard it be called and put him in it, just to have regretted letting him go, and went in after him, the Darkin took both their souls and joined them together and through love they surpress the darkin from taking over completely. So that's why it might sound crazy. There is three vocals, the one you didnt like, the main melody voice and the harmony to the melody, three in one.

At 3:28, that high pitched sound is a resonant peak, something went wrong during mixing and they did not eq that correctly, nice catch. Ive listened to this a million times and never noticed

in regards to the headphone-topic: I never had the feeling with my headphones/audio that it is too loud/too high so it might be indeed yours when you say it reacts quicker to the high pitches but also you do this professionally and I just like listening to music so... yeah. I love watching your reactions and how genuine they are. This is kind of a good example how as a non-league player, not knowing the lore would make listening to the music a little confusing at times. The yell at the hook was one of the first things I noticed when I listened to the song and I liked how the hook is messy with its three sets of vocals. As a singer and a performer (I did theatre for over 10 years, this kind of vocal layering mirrors the characters and story progression). But yeah, I Guess for me I had context, so I enjoyed the chaotic nature of the music. I think that’s why I love it so much because it’s part of the story they are telling about the champion Varus.

The nice thing about this song is that this is the second part of a 3 parts story about the creation of varus. The comics are amazing too. When i read the comics and then saw the video it was that much more intense.

Just started watching, I think the reason it overwhelmed you is because they're playing a little bit of his arrow which is super high-pitched and that's every time Varus the entity is on the screen.

Something I just realised after watching this for like the 50th time, is in the drop, the second voice on the top becomes very synthetic, like, it's all corrected to the same note. I assume that's Varus being an imitation of their humanity as he takes over

No one should ever like every single type of music, there's always gonna be something you don't enjoy. It's good that you were honest about it. The most important thing is that you didn't call it bad, you just didn't like it. Music, like comedy, is all personal preference.

The effects of voices around the double voice is to represent the duality present in the character of the game. Varus (the being who appears at the end of the video with the bow and arrow) is a "darkin" (Gods who were corrupted and ended up going crazy) and was stuck on that altar where the other two men dived. One of the men was injured because the place was being invaded by another country, so his companion took him to the altar in the hope of being able to heal him. However, what happened was the liberation of Varus, consuming the body of the two and merging the mind of the 3 into a single being, which resurfaces from the altar at the end of the video. Basically, the lyrics tell the perspective of the companion who took the injured colleague to the altar, the effects on the voices represent the Darkin's corruption affecting them and the duality of the two merging.

I know a couple (a lot?) of people are saying that the high-pitched noise is a drawn-out "fall" but you can hear when he cuts it off at the end of the line "drifting down to the other side". There is legitimately a high key being struck repeatedly and I hate you for pointing it out to me 😭
