Music & Politics with Nirvana Bassist Krist Novoselic

Krist Novoselic is famous for for music-- he cofounded and played bass for the now-legendary band, Nirvana with his friend Kurt Cobain, and has also played with the Foo Fighters. But he's also been extremely active as a political activist and reformer. Since 2008 he has been board chair of the electoral reform organization FairVote and he is the creator of JAMPAC (Joint Artists and Musicians Political Action Committee).
What was it like growing up partly in Croatia (Yugoslavia at the time) and moving back to Aberdeen? And what was it like absorbing the music that helped him create music with Cobain and Nirvana? What was it like when Nevermind exploded and became a cultural phenomenon?
Novoselic talks about his huge musical career, why electoral reform and fair tallying and representation are so incredibly necessary, and much more on music and politics with The Young Turks host, Cenk Uygur.

Also, he was in the band Flipper for a while after Nirvana and also put out a one-off album with a band he formed called Sweet 75. The Sweet 75 album is great, so is all of his post-Nirvana stuff. Definitely worth a listen. Be well.

His suicide had nothing to do with his stance on gun control. Cobain grew up in rural Aberdeen where gun ownership was high and gun violence was low. The rationale for gun control is hard to comprehend when you grow up in an area where guns are associated more with family than with violence.

I was talking with Dave Abbruzzese backstage (so to speak), when Jeff Ament and Stone Gossard walked up and talked together for the 1st time since Dave was fired. It was real awkward, Dave was kinda hurting, and he turned back to me to talk after a bit. It was clear it was still hard for him. Dave was a real nice guy to me. Krist Novoselic walked up and asked me, "And who are you". That was that...lol. Too gangsta for me! Krist is a giant. I wanted to thank him for his efforts against censorship but was too shy. That was in a big venue in Seattle. I missed Krist in Yugoslavia by 5 years it seems. I was in Plitvice and Zagreb, playing a lil bit. Small ass world. Yugoslavians seemed reluctant to talk with us. Cold war issue I figured but I didn't speak Serbo-Croatian either, so there was that too. He mentioned Pavement. I loved them more than the Melvins even. Check them out on YT. Not sure why I wrote all that pfft

It also brings another point to light, the fact that krist isnt at all as well known as he should be!! He is one of the founding members and technically IS half of nirvana! This just comes down to something that I fucking hate SOOOO MUCH! I absolutely LOVE nirvana!! But the one thing I hate is that there are SOOOOO many fucking posers and fake fans!!! Due to them selling that FUCKING TSHIRT EVERYWHERE!!!! (the black one with the yellow face with nirvana on it!) Dumb kids buy that because they think it makes them "cool" just because they have a shirt and only know teen spirit or come as you are!!! Well done geffen records for making an amazing, humble, revolutionary, ground breaking band, into a corporate brand they push and push for the most profits possible!!! Remember none of this happened when the band was around!! This is all post break up and done by yuppy, corporate pigs, sat in their ivory, 200 floor record towers, planning their next billion dollar move! Sorry rant over! Tito was a political link between the West and East, that's why he was allowed to keep Yugoslavia independent from the West, politically he was very very important on a global scale. The Yugoslavian economy was one of the strongest in Europe, growing around 6% a year. The Soviet union plundered the other countries and sent all the wealth from them to Moscow, Yugoslavia was not a part of this system. To give you a picture on how much richer people were in Yugoslavia, shopping busses to the Soviet union was a regular thing, people could buy a years supply of meat and other food with a single wage. All workers had one month vacation by law, my grandfather company(Coal Company were he worked) had hotels by the ocean, the workers got to stay there one month a year for free, this was a standard. The wages were at the same standard as western, higher then many countries even. And this is true since my family lived there during this time, everyone had a job, they can not remember a single person who did not have a job. So when did things turn ? Well after Tito died the political strength he had died with him, Yugoslavia became a target for the west with the US and Germany at the front, what they did first was focus on the economy first, the bought political leaders with spies that were responsible for the government companies, one of them bankrupt 1500 companies during 2-3 years, you don't have to be very smart to understand this should not be possible, after the economy was damaged they sanctioned the country, after that they armed fascist groups on all sides and ignored the much much larger parties who wanted a peaceful split, they gave funding to small groups of lunatics. The point of all this was to avoid a direct conflict with the Yugoslav army, at the time it was the froth largest in Europe, but that was not the problem,in normal conditions they would have destroyed it in a few months, the problem with Yugoslavia was the terrain of the country, is horrible for large a large army, hills mountains well pretty much anything you can imagine. The Ottoman empire who at one point had the largest military in the world did not manage to take all of Yugoslavia for 500 years because of the terrain. Afghanistan with no weapons at all compared to Yugoslavia fought of the Soviet union in rough terrain, you have North Korea, Vietnam all these were a horror for the US, they did not want to fight at all and they managed to use the fact that Yugoslavia was full of different people, muslims, Ortodox christians and catholics, they gave weapons and money to the smaller racist groups to force the normal people to be pulled into a full out war. Since that crime has gone up 1000%, poverty 70%, unemployment 50%, and of course the IMF put the EX Yugoslavian countries in so much dept they will never be able to rebuild a good country.

Bullshit, there was massive poverty in certain parts of Yugoslavia even when economy was at its best around 1962-67. Average wages were never as in western Europe- Spain, Greece and Portugal are not western Europe. And it went bad (= deficits already) from 1972 and Titos ( or serbian majority`s in parliament) stupid decision to say no to become part of EEC.

We vote on judges in NC and some races this year had 16 candidates for one seat. Who to vote for? In NC the government is 40 behind the times, so I hope the judge is somewhat informed about what's happening now!

I am very thankful to Krist for getting Cenk to acknowledge that other voting systems to first-past-the-post are possible. This is the first time I heard him address the issue. He should have, however, gone into more detail about what he is advocating (Single-Transferable Vote for proportional representation and Instant Runoff Voting for single seats) and how it works. Unfortunately, federal law prohibits states from using proportional representation to elect their representatives to the House so that is currently a no go. IRV is much better than first-past-the-post, but it is still not a very good system. The ideal solution is to use a top two primary with APPROVAL VOTING instead of First-past-the-post. If that had been used in Waxman's old seat, voters could vote for their favorite candidate without being penalized for it and the two candidates with the highest approval rating would have moved into the top two. If it had been used, both the primary and the general election would have been much, much more competitive and the top two would have truly reflected the population as a whole.

Alex Bird I think he is talking about two things. 1) There are two main political parties : the Democratic party and the Republican party. Some districts go solidly one way or another. In most races you have a Democrat and a Republican that you have to chose from. If you are a Democrat in a Republican district, your vote means nothing because the Republican is always going to win that district. If the race were between a Republican vs a Republican, you could at least have a say in which Republican gets elected. 2) If seats were allocated proportionally to the vote, you can still have a voice in spite of not being in the majority. Let's say every district elected five candidates proportionally. You are a Democrat in a district that is 55% Republican. If you allocate seats proportionally, you might get 3 Republicans and 2 Democrats instead of just a single Republican winner. You might even get a result that elects some minor parties. For example, you might get: 2 Republicans 1 Libertarian, 1 Democrat, and 1 Green. In a winner take all system, it doesn't matter if you win just over 50% or 99%. The winner gets the seat and the other side gets nothing regardless of how much other support he gets. When you have multiple districts this can cause a distorting effect in which the final results don't match the population as a whole. If Democrats win their districts by 90% and Republicans win their districts by 55%, this is going to cause Republicans to win more seats in spite of being the party that least represents the country as a whole. What makes the problem worse is that when districts are redrawn, they are redrawn in a way to maximize the result for the party who is in control of redrawing the districts. One party can pack as many voters from the other side in one district as possible. In other districts, they can pack just enough of their own supporters in that district to secure a victory for that party. For a better explanation, go to the KZread channel of CGPGrey and view his videos on voting. He has a series on the Animal Kingdom that explains this very well.

It sucks that it's not that transparent as it have to be with all this confusing rules, it's great that you live in the us & you believe in voting & your laws are pretty much for the people, most of the time, the people have that ability to vote, kinda, but I live in the Ukraine & this voting system not that transparent as yours, I know lots of people from my university, it was like almost everybody who voted for Party A in our district but after the election it turns out that the numbers was much lower than it was and the Party B won, I mean, this feeling about Party A will win was in the air, because everybody was talking about it and like everybody you ask say that they voted for Party A, & this thing was kinda every year, because of this revolution we have, looks like something will change, but still, when it comes to voting the same things happening, new faces in the Old Parties or old faces in a New Parties & no real information about this people you can find, only google helps sometimes when you searching for this people online for hours to find out something about them. We have lots of parties, some of them Russian some European directed & it's really hard to choose because of new Parties always appear. Thanks for easy English explanation, I will consider your advice about CGPGrey

Cenk, you mentioned how the parliamentary system results in fundamentalists surviving a fractured system. I argue that Gerrymandering does the same thing. By drawing safe seats for Democrats and Republicans the only election that matters is the primary election, and primaries tends to favor the more extremists candidates. If the district has a 50/50 split than there is no way that an extreme candidate would win but the safe district basically guarantees that the dominant party wins no matter how extreme that primary candidate is.

If everyone were as engaged as Krist maybe the US could be as modern as Yugoslavia or Spain! I trained and hitched in Yugoslavia for 2 weeks back in '81, and two months in Italy and Spain, and compared to the US, they were far ahead of the US politically and culturally, probably due in part to how isolated and ignorant we generally are kept in the US by US media's propaganda, and American low brow culture and school bred ignorance is an obvious factor. But I dont get Krist's support for Obama.
