Music Distribution vs Music Publishing Administration

Questions concerning Music Distribution vs Music Publishing Administration comes up often. The question most asked is, “What’s the difference between music distribution and music publishing administration”? Which distributor should I choose? Do I need SoundExchange if I have Distrokid? Do I need SoundExchange if I'm a member of ASCAP? What is Songtrust? You will learn the differences in this video!
Artists and songwriters often get confused thinking, because they have music distribution, they don't need to register with a PRO, or they confuse music publishing administration and distribution by thinking they don't need SoundExchange. So in today’s video, I will answer these questions and more! Click to watch now!
UPDATE: Since the MLC opened its doors, the MLC now collects your mechanical royalties that Harry Fox and Music Reports used to collect from The DSPs. Music Reports and the Harry Fox Agency still collect mechanical royalties from companies that did not opt into the blanket license with the MLC. Harry Fox no longer offers free registrations. You must become a member to join. They also collect your mechanicals internationally.
UPDATE: CDBaby has closed its Pro division and has implemented CDB Boost in its place. Collecting from the MLC, SoundExchange, and Sync royalties.

Good Day, Ms. Watkins. While registering a song title on Nielson/SoundScan, upon entering the UPC #, I only have 13 digit numbers, not 12, which is what Nielson/SoundScan requires. Should I remove the last digit ( the 13th number)? PS> when i do remove the 13th number, it does go through but, I just want to be certain that it's my unique UPC # & not someone else's.

Bstar’s World those are royalties that affect the Artist/Label for sound recordings. That’s different from publishing or songwriter royalties. If you would like to participate in those royalties as an Artist or as a master rights owner then you should join to get potential royalties from them. Also, if you didn’t opt in to collect them through your PRO.

At the latter part of this video, you stated in the recap that distributors are able to collect both performance and mechanical royalties. I was wondering if you think it’s still beneficial to sign up with a Publishing Admin like Songtrust if I’m able to register my own works w/ ASCAP, Harry Fox, SoundExchange, Music Reports, and AARC. As an independent music publisher, is there any other royalties that I’m missing out on that a music pub like Songtrust would be able to collect on my behalf? Thanks, Kim

If you sign up with Songtrust, all of the songs that you register in your account with them, they would take over all registrations to all of the accounts you mentioned, and they would collect international royalties for you. With HFA, you can collect your own international royalties, by opting into the Mint license inside of your account. Be sure to watch my videos on the MLC. I have two. It won't affect your distribution. Just choose a distributor, and not their administration arm. For instance, just choose Tunecore and NOT Tunecore Publishing, or CD Baby and NOT CD Baby Pro, and you will be alright and able to self administer your works.

In a future video, could you possibly create a flow chart for independent artists? Example: Step 1: Create/record a song. Step 2: Signup with BMI or ASCAP. as an artist Step 3: Choose a publishing company or start your own for $200 with BMI (3 year contract). Step 4: Signup with a distribution company. Step 5: Register/copyright work. However, I am certain the steps I listed above are in the incorrect order.

Possible improvement for step #6: In the checklist, maybe if a hyperlink that tied to the different PRO websites was included in the checklist (i.e. step # 6 would have BMI and ASCAP hyperlinked to their respective websites). Feedback for step #18: I know there are several music distribution companies, that's why this step didn't list any. However, I would like to see your picks for possible music distribution companies. Possible improvement for step #18: Include some examples (e.g. Distrokid, OneRPM, CDBaby, etc,; however I understand if they are omitted to not show favoritism/endorsement towards a company. Hi Alan, I'm so sorry that I'm just seeing this. My notifications haven't been working lately. No distributor gives you all for free. You are paying something. If you use Tunecore as your publishing administrator, they will work to register your music and you give them license to publish etc. Now as far as "anything they want", I can't comment on that without seeing the language in context. There's a new distributor I'm using this time around named Songflowr. All you do is pay one fee for your single, EP or album and that's it. You get to keep 100% of your royalties if you're looking for a good distributor without all of the legalese.

If you allow your distributor to upload your music to KZread, you will have a generic place on KZread, however, I always encourage each Artist to have their own Artist channel, personalized according to their brand and personality.

Do Publishing administrators upload your music for you to the distributor. If so will it show their names at the bottom like a record label? Or does the independent artist upload themselves and the publishing administration gets the data and collects that way?

Hello, I need help. My goal is to get as much as my royalties as possible without putting all of my time into the business admin. part so I can still be creative and make music. My plan is to get an LLC, affiliate it with a PRO as a songwriter and publisher. I also plan to copyright my music and get an EIN. My question is: Do I sign up with SongTrust then hire a Distributor? Or do I skip SongTrust and hire a Distributor with a Pro such as CD Baby Pro or TuneCore Publishing? I do not want to do anything illegal but at the same time get my royalties and get help with administration. Thanks!

It’s a personal choice on which Admin Publisher you want to use. So if you go with CD Baby and also CD Baby Pro or CD Baby and Songtrust etc you’ll be fine.

Question - Does a publishing administrator register your music with Soundexchange?

  • @TheMusicBusinessMadeEasy

No. SoundExchange deals with sound recording royalties, not songwriter/publishing royalties. Record labels/master owners and featured Artists are the ones to register with SoundExchange to collect those.

How come I see some artists when they use both Ascap and BMI at the same time on a particular song on KZread? Because I thought it had to only be one. Thank you.
