"Billie Jean" is a song by American singer Michael Jackson, released by Epic Records on January 2, 1983, as the second single from his sixth studio album, Thriller (1982). It was written and composed by Jackson and produced by Jackson and Quincy Jones. "Billie Jean" blends post-disco, R&B, funk, and dance-pop. The lyrics describe a woman, Billie Jean, who claims that the narrator is the father of her newborn son, which he denies. Jackson said the lyrics were based on groupies' claims about his older brothers when he toured with them as the Jackson 5.
"Billie Jean" reached number one on the Billboard Hot 100, topped the Billboard Hot Black Singles chart within three weeks, and became Jackson's fastest-rising number one single since "ABC", "The Love You Save" and "I'll Be There" in 1970, all of which he recorded as a member of the Jackson 5. Billboard ranked it as the No. 2 song for 1983. "Billie Jean" is certified Diamond by the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA). It was also a number one hit in the UK, Canada, France, Switzerland and Belgium, and reached the top ten in many other countries. "Billie Jean" was one of the best-selling singles of 1983, helping Thriller become the best-selling album of all time, and became Jackson's best-selling solo single.
Jackson's performance of "Billie Jean" on the TV special Motown 25: Yesterday, Today, Forever won acclaim and was nominated for an Emmy Award. It introduced a number of Jackson's signatures, including the moonwalk, black sequined jacket, and high-water pants, and was widely imitated. The "Billie Jean" music video, directed by Steve Barron, was the first video by a black artist to be aired in heavy rotation on MTV. Along with the other videos produced for Thriller, it helped establish MTV's cultural importance and make music videos an integral part of popular music marketing. The spare, bass-driven arrangement of "Billie Jean" helped pioneer what one critic called "sleek, post-soul pop music". It also introduced a more paranoid lyrical style for Jackson, a trademark of his later music.
"Billie Jean" was awarded honors including two Grammy Awards and an American Music Award. In a list compiled by Rolling Stone and MTV in 2000, the song was ranked as the sixth greatest pop song since 1963. Rolling Stone placed it at number 58 on its list of The 500 Greatest Songs of All Time in 2004, and at number 44 in its 2021 update of the list. The song was also included in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame's 500 Songs That Shaped Rock and Roll.[3] Frequently listed in magazine polls of the best songs ever made, "Billie Jean" was named the greatest dance record of all time by BBC Radio 2 listeners.

MJ's special effects on stage here was his shiny socks, spotlight and the glove. I have been watching Billie jean live performances for little over a decade now, and every time I watch them it feels like watching it for the first time.

Yes, exactly! Michael dances so effortlessly as if he was born doing it. He's mesmerizing because it's so effortless. Dance is simply his body's interpretation of music - so he doesn't need to think about doing it. As he said in the Oprah interview he was sometimes surprised himself when watching footage from his own performances, but when possessed by the spirit of song he let it guide him. A musical genius. "On many an occasion when I'm dancing, I've felt touched by something sacred. In those moments, I've felt my spirit soar and become one with everything that exists." And I'd totally love to platonically massage him too.🤣Especially after these concerts. He was said to exert himself to the point where they needed to give him oxygen tanks in the short midperformance breaks because he couldn't catch his breath. So he definitely needed some good massaging 😇 Anyway, wish you two a blessed Easter ❤
This is a flawless performance by MJ. Jonathan Moffett, his long time drummer, said that his favorite part of the concerts he was a part of (not this one) is the end of Billie Jean when it’s just him on the drums and MJ on stage. Michael is a very special person. He wants to achieve with his performances that people can escape their everyday life and worries for this moment. Michael: "... to give people some sense of escapism, a treat to the eye and the ear. I think it’s the reason I’m here." And Michaels answer to the question 'what he has done differently in his career if he knew than what he knows now' impresses me very much and also shows Michael's character a bit: "Practise more." (And everyone knows that Michael has practised a lot.)

Yes! This performance is fire. All Billie Jean performances are so great, and that's because some parts are improvised/changed (especially the last part where he is freestyling). Definitelly should check some Billie Jean Dangerous and HIStory performances as well. But yeah this era is fire. Michael in his absolute prime. I think it would be nice if you guys would watch an award video. The blazer Michael wearing was his mother's blazer out of Michael's mother closet. Michael loved shiny and sequins clothings. Michael wore clothing with Sequins, shiny and white. Michael said by wearing these things his fans from afar could see the movements of his moves.

Hi honey & brown. Thanks so much for sharing your reactions to Wembley performances and this one is also one of my favorites of his Billie Jean live performance - Motown 25 my most favorite ♥ Guys you said it -- MJ is so natural and moves effortlessly during his performance here - because he always moves with the beat and rhythm. His performances are so smooth-- mostly the similar moves but he changes it in the moment. Also you guys have to see his other tour performances. He changes the choreography as well but its still original Billie Jean. 🥰🥰 I believe you've seen my commemorative Billie Jean mix - its a collection of all tours of Billie Jean performances - you'll see what I mean by the same yet different moves. MJ is magic in every performance. He is so cocky yes, but he is right on the beat and gives so much even up to the point before he puts on his fedora - he pays his respect to it -- such a performer. You can't take your eyes off of him because every part of his body is in motion during the breakdown - even when he flicks back his jacket - by the way is it the same style jacket from Motown 25 -he wore his mother's sequined jacket for that performance - his sequined black shirt just made that look iconic too. loving the wembley concert reactions keep em coming this billie jean performance is 1 of my most favs my most fav of all time is his 1992 billie jean performance during the dangerous tour in bucharest that 1 is just sooo incredible u def should react too that 1 as well and compare the 2 and see which one u like better! also the 1992 bucharest performaces of beat it and smooth criminal will blow ur minds those 2 are def reactions u need too do after u finish ur wembley concert reactions!

This was prime Michael. BAD Tour was crazy good. I never felt that energy again. One cannot believe who energetic he was on some of those evenings. Its was like the music was him and he was the music. Everything flowed out of him with no resistance. Completely free of ego. Wembley was really special. Also quite stunning his Last Concert in Los Angeles. After all those performances maintaining that energy is mindblowing, really mindblowing. I wish those original umatic tapes from the Wembley performance will surface one day so we can see it again in 4K.
