Mushroom Foraging in September 2022

I wasn't so sure if it was going to be a good year for mushrooms, after such a very dry summer, but it's shaping up to be a great year I think!

*This video is getting a lot of spam advertising various mind altering substances* - The format and behaviour of the spam is exactly identical to the spam coming from fake hackers you may have seen me scambait in other videos. My assumption (and I suggest yours) is that these are all scammers who will just take your money and run.

I live in a very rural area out in the sticks and mushrooms are an abundance around here. I'm just getting into foraging and your videos are a massive help! Thank you Shrimp, keep up the hard work !
Atomic Shrimp surely does know his audience very well, he knows how enjoyable these foraging in nature videos are. Especially to me, they are so relaxing and actually, because of him, I do tend to cook with mushrooms and try different recipes a lot more often than I did before knowing this channel.
"hey, you're getting soil in my mushroom basket" I don't know why that made me chuckle
What a lucky girl Jenny is. A lovely walk in the woods and then gets taken home and has her dinner cooked for her!
You predicted a good year for the fungi with the dry summer and now some rain. I'm delighted, and not in the least bit surprised, that you were correct. If I had more experience I'd be out for a forage today myself. Perhaps next year.

When I picked parasol mushrooms with my parents we'd just dip the whole head in milk and egg mixture, cover them in breadcrumbs and fry them like a steak or a fillet. I highly recommend that for the ones that had a chance to open their parasol fully.

soaking in beer works well too. I recently picked a big amount of parasols and fried them without any soaking and they tasted the same as usual
In the 50s, my Grandad was out picking mushrooms in rural Leicestershire, he would have been 12 ish. While he was out tramping, a police car pulled up and two coppers asked what he was doing. "Picking mushrooms" he told them honestly. The got out, collected him and put him into the back of their car. One swift clip around the earhole later: "Don't lie to us, you're the one who's been stealing chickens!" They thought, at that time, no one in their right mind would use a sack to pick mushrooms as a basket was the only sensible way to carry them. He pled his case in the back of their car as his mum was using the basket at the time tending to her allotment and that he had no choice but to use the sack that they normally used for fruit picking. They did eventually let him go but from hearing that story at a young age, I've understood it to be taboo to pick mushrooms using anything other than a wicker basket
Reminds me of my childhood living in Poland. Each year we used to forage for mushrooms. Still love it to this day. Great use of those mushrooms by the way

me too! its hilarious im excited about this, but here we are.
Loved the ‘Will it blend’ callback. “Don’t breathe this”. Really enjoy your small references to internet culture, always brings a smile to my face.
I am absolutely working my keister off right now trying to get my house in order so that when I'm ready, I'll be able to live in the rolling, green hills of the absolutely beautiful English countryside. Every time you share one of these videos with us I just can't help but feel this sense of longing and yearning to be exactly where you are doing exactly what you are doing. I've only had the privilege and rapturous pleasure of visiting there twice; once with school as a kid and once again much older, and I did have just the best time ever.
You threw away my favourite part of the parasoll mushroom 😆. I always eat the ring raw. It has loads of flavour and a very nice texture. You are right in not cooking it, because it would just disappear, but next time just shove it in your mouth while picking the mushroom. It's a very nice little treat. The parasoll mushroom is my overall favourite mushroom. I just fry the flat caps whole in butter and cut it into "pizzaslices" at the table. I love both the flavour and the texture of them. Very delicate as you said 👍
"Mushroom dust, don't breathe this" made me actually laugh out loud, because I was thinking the exactly the same thing at the time .
It's inspiring to see someone behave so thoughtfully and deliberately. Thanks!
It's truly been an exceptional year for Penny Buns where I live too (Scotland). Never seen a crop like it. I carry mine in a backpack and have filled it about 5 times so far, while still leaving plenty to age and spore. Of course, we get the same chew marks on the caps and on some of the stems too, but I trim them all off, just in case they are the result of mice (which poop and pee everywhere). I usually dry my mushrooms and pack them into jars. But this year I'm pre-cooking them with salt, soy sauce and stock cubes (Oxo 'vegan' beef and chicken flavour) and then freezing them in 2 litre ex- ice cream tubs. I've also turned some of the Penny Buns into mushroom pate as well (because I'm not going to pay nearly £3 for a teeny-weeny little tub of mushroom pate any more). Penny Buns make great pate and, with a bit of the above flavouring, plus smoked paprika and cornstarch for thickening, taste exactly like the supermarket stuff. I remove the pores from the mushrooms beforehand as these made it a bit slushy. I have started to pick a few Russulas that I'm absolutely certain of now. The one called Charcoal Burner occurs occasionally in local woodlands, and there are some nice yellow ones about. I did nibble at one of the really dark purple red ones - and it really is as hot as the books warn. I'll not be doing that again. We've had less in the way of Hen/Chicken-of-the-woods, Chanterelles, Stump Puffballs and Beefsteak Fungus this year, which the family really like. So I think the dry weather might have affected all of those. However, there's promise of a very exceptional crop of Wood Hedgehogs just emerging, whole troupes of them, which I have never seen before. Looking forward to those! I can well understand the wariness around the Amanita family. We have loads around here, and I have eaten a False Death Cap once (by accident - and that really shook me up once I went through the identification book yet again, and realised my mistake). It was delicious, by the way, like roasted chestnuts! We see lots of The Blusher, Griselles, False Death Cap (obviously) but also a heck of a lot of all the nasties. I do pick the Fly Agaric from time to time and place pieces of the caps around Birch trees in my garden together with kitchen scraps from the Penny Buns. This is because some mycologists are beginning to suspect they might have some sort of mutual relationship, since they are often found growing together in the wild. I do have one successful Fly Agaric/Birch Bolete pairing around my oldest Birch (15 years old), and I have other Boletes growing around other Birch trees (the Fly Agaric taking longer to start fruiting).
What a delightful video, thank you! I grew up in a small town and every autumn we would go to the forest looking for mushrooms - i'd usually go with my grandparents, but my parents and aunt would sometimes come along too... We'd also look for berries since we have lots of those growing as well :) I don't even like eating mushrooms that much, but the process of looking for them was really fun. I live in a bigger city now and I rather miss it.
First time I saw a mushroom ring some years ago, was a huge one, I was so fascinated, it was so interesting to me that they did that completely naturally

For those who can't be bothered with a dehydrator, I have very successfully used my regular fan oven to dry mushrooms and beef jerky, just turn your oven on as low as it can go (probably 50°C) and leave the oven door slightly ajar, I've stuck a pencil in the door creating a small gap for the air to circulate and just dry your thinly sliced mushrooms on racks.
@raraavis7782

Because of you, I'm now being quite mindful whilst out and about. For the first time in my life, I've spent the year looking around spotting forageable plants, fruits, and mushrooms. I've been careful with the mushroom side of things, and have only picked for consumption, the very common agaricus mushrooms. That said, I've furnished myself with a couple of good reference books with good clear photos. My partner is dismayed when we go for walks as I do the "look at that" and "here, smell this" thing all the time now

It's a great substitute for parmesan! However, many Italians prefer not to eat cheese with mushroom pasta, as the umami flavour of the cheese tends to mask the umami flavours of the mushrooms. I'm sure that's not the phrasing they'd use, but that's the rationale.

Eva reminds me of a dog I had when I was a kid....the dog would go nuts scraping at a sunken brick or stone, and could easily spend 30 minutes or more trying to free it. She'd come up for air with her mouth black from the soil she'd disturbed, as some of the scraping was done with her mouth as well as her paws. Crazy dog.

I'm not much of a mushroom fan, but the trip through the woods was awesome and the pasta dish you made looks delicious.
Rubescens is a pretty good amanita to start with if you’re apprehensive about the genus, it can only really be confused with the panther cap, but the red blushing distinguishes it quite easily. Very common and very tasty too. Amanita muscaria is pretty much unmistakable and can be made completely edible by preparing it properly. That usually puts people off but really it’s no more dangerous than cooking chicken.
