Walk 60 / Victoria and Albert Museum (A Virtual Tour) / Cromwell Rd, Knightsbridge, London SW7 2RL, UK / London, UK / 10 March 2019, Sunday
-
From Wikipedia :
The Victoria and Albert Museum (often abbreviated as the V&A) in London is the world's largest museum of applied and decorative arts and design, as well as sculpture, housing a permanent collection of over 2.27 million objects. It was founded in 1852 and named after Queen Victoria and Prince Albert.
The V&A is located in the Brompton district of the Royal Borough of Kensington and Chelsea, in an area that has become known as "Albertopolis" because of its association with Prince Albert, the Albert Memorial and the major cultural institutions with which he was associated. These include the Natural History Museum, the Science Museum, the Royal Albert Hall and Imperial College London. The museum is a non-departmental public body sponsored by the Department for Culture, Media and Sport. As with other national British museums, entrance is free.
The V&A covers 12.5 acres (5.1 ha) and 145 galleries. Its collection spans 5,000 years of art, from ancient times to the present day, from the cultures of Europe, North America, Asia and North Africa. However, the art of antiquity in most areas is not collected. The holdings of ceramics, glass, textiles, costumes, silver, ironwork, jewellery, furniture, medieval objects, sculpture, prints and printmaking, drawings and photographs are among the largest and most comprehensive in the world.
The museum owns the world's largest collection of post-classical sculpture, with the holdings of Italian Renaissance items being the largest outside Italy. The departments of Asia include art from South Asia, China, Japan, Korea and the Islamic world. The East Asian collections are among the best in Europe, with particular strengths in ceramics and metalwork, while the Islamic collection is amongst the largest in the Western world. Overall, it is one of the largest museums in the world.
Since 2001 the museum has embarked on a major £150m renovation programme. New 17th- and 18th-century European galleries were opened on 9 December 2015. These restored the original Aston Webb interiors and host the European collections 1600-1815. The V&A Museum of Childhood in East London is a branch of the museum, and a new branch in London is being planned.

    Dear our friend Heman,👋 It’s an exciting museum, as if you’re walking on “Collection Street.” The name dates back to the Queen Victoria era, and it’s a museum where you can feel history. My friend who works in design said that visiting this museum broadens their inspiration. When watching Heman’s videos,I feel a force as if the collection is speaking to here on this side.(Iku) Heman captured the artwork with close-ups, and we were able to experience a sense of excitement.✨ Yosh and Iku

    Dear Yosh and Iku, I am now in London. I had just revisited the V&A a couple of days ago, and I always love it when I am in the 'Cast Courts'. It is such a strange way of collecting all these sculptures and I often imagine myself in some kind of pirate treasure trove. I ma happy that you both have walked with me in this museum. Here is another walk in a historical museum, this one in Ulanbaatar, probably somewhere I will never visit ever again in my life. Please enjoy! kzread.info/dash/bejne/ZXV_uLyMfc7QY7w.html

    So different than when I was there in 2007. The sculpture courts to the right were closed and under renovation. It looks so very changed from my visits. One of the top highlights of my month long trip. For free and only a couple blocks from where I was staying. Just loved the place so very much. (I see our local art guy's chandelier is still in the entry rotunda.)Thank you for this video - it is a treasure!

    When you are walking is there any way that the camera could be jostled/snapped around less, please? The clarity of your video feed is so clear but the snapping about makes me a bit motion sick. I would really love to see the items displayed a wee bit longer if you could consider it. Many, many thanks!!

  • @AmbientWalking

    They're replicas of the original. I feel strongly that this is the way to go with collecting antique works of art; that the British Museums should just commission replicas of the original, rather than obtain the originals.

  • @JohnTronto

    @JohnTronto

    @@AmbientWalking Is there any infos on when & how they, especially David ,were copid? Did the Italians allow anyone made a mold for copies? Anyway, I share the same sentiment. All museums not just in England should give back the original artefacts & arts to their countries unless acquired legally (not colonial lootings). But then many are hard to replicate & takes much time & $$$.

  • @AmbientWalking

    @@JohnTronto You can read about the Cast Courts here : www.vam.ac.uk/articles/history-of-the-cast-courts Yes, it is indeed time consuming and cost a lot of money to replicate but in the long run, it is the best solution to battle the post colonial legacy.

    I went to the V&A back at the start of 2020 before the UK went into Lockdown, and I asked someone working there how they got all of the big sculptures in those rooms into the museum! The ceilings are glass and can be removed like a lid, and the sculptures are lifted and placed in by cranes! I don't know whether you already knew this but thought I'd share that information with you! :)
