Muscle Car Of The Week Video Episode #179: 1967 Shelby GT500 427 Side Oiler
The ‘65 and ‘66 Shelby Mustangs were very successful cars, but Shelby upped the stakes for ‘67 by introducing a big-block version of the GT cars with the GT500. However, this one takes it up another notch with a 427 "side-oiler" V8. From The Brothers Collection.
The 1967 Shelby GT500 was a significant evolution from its predecessors, transitioning from the initial track-focused design to a more refined and comfortable muscle car. Here are some key points about the 1967 Shelby GT500:
1. *Evolution of Shelby Mustangs:* The 1965 GT350 was renowned for its raw power and performance, but over time, the Shelby Mustangs, including the 1967 GT500, evolved towards greater comfort and style to appeal to a broader market. However, they still retained impressive performance capabilities.
2. *GT500: A Shift Towards Comfort:* The 1967 GT500 was a more refined version compared to its predecessors, catering to the mass market's preferences. It featured additional comfort and style elements while maintaining its performance pedigree.
3. *Engine Transition: 428 to 427:* While the 1967 GT500 originally came with a 428 V8 engine, some owners opted for a swap to the more high-strung 427 side oiler due to the 428's reliability issues under hard driving conditions. This swap was relatively easy due to the similarities between the two engines.
4. *428 Police Interceptor vs. 427 Side Oiler:* The 428 in the GT500 was a modified police interceptor engine, delivering 355 horsepower and 420 pound-feet of torque. In contrast, the 427 side oiler was a high-performance racing engine with higher compression, tighter tolerances, and a solid mechanical valve train, resulting in a nastier idle and more power at higher revs.
5. *Authenticity and Modifications:* While purists might argue for authenticity and the importance of having the original 428 engine, the 427 side oiler offers a different driving experience and performance characteristics. This specific GT500, despite not having its original engine, showcases a choice that aligns with the spirit of Shelby's high-performance ethos.
6. *Design and Features:* The 1967 GT500 underwent various modifications, including fiberglass nose pieces, unique body features, and distinctive styling elements like the sequential taillights.
Ultimately, the preference between the mellow 428 and the high-strung 427 boils down to individual driving preferences and appreciation for authenticity versus modified performance. Both engines have their merits, offering distinct driving experiences in the iconic 1967 Shelby GT500.

the 1967 Shelby GT500 is one of the most beautiful cars ever made. A 427 should've been an option...

my Uncle raced a 1967 and 1969 Shelby, both with a 427 SOHC “cammer”. He's told me quite a few times that if it wasn't for Stengers ford and “Ohio” George Montgomery in Dayton, Ohio neither car would've been possible. On a few Fridays/Saturdays my Uncle would drive my grandfather and my-5 year old-self in those cars to Stengers ford and then to “make a little spending money” from a few Chevy and Dodge boys in Dayton...I just wish my Uncle would've kept at least one of the cars, hell even a engine.

Although I owned a 68 gt500kr with a 427 side oiler, dealer installed, because the person who ordered the car wouldnt accept it without the 427 he ordered, he ordered it in late 67 when it was on option list.

My uncle had a GT500 in 1967. I was too young to drive then, but I got a few rides in it. To a young kid, it seemed like a rocket ship although it probably wasn't all that fast by today's standards. His was a stick shift and the thing pulled like crazy in 2nd gear. If you got on it in first gear, forget it. The back tires were up in flames. People forget how light weight the earlier Mustangs were, too. None of the 4000+ pound nonsense you see today with pony cars.

Rodger that on the weight. My first race car build (meaning lousy) was a 67 390 car. It weighted 2850 before the exhaust was put on it, so under 3000 race ready with a full cage. I feel there is no excuse for a Mustang to weigh nearly 4000lbs. I bought an 07 GT and hated it because of the weight. I traded it for a Miata. Much better.

In 1967 a bunch of us all bought mustangs. One friend bought the GT500. He told the dealer he wanted a 427 not the 428 and they said it was not available that way however they knew there were several cars perhaps as many as eight who’d had the dealer install a 427 in the brand new car. Big money. Wonder if this is one?

Carroll Shelby and Bob Tasca both offered the 1967 GT 500 with an optional 427 side-oiler if the buyer was willing to pay the additional cost. How many were built? Who knows, surely not many, but there were GT 500's built with a 427 side-oiler. The video states that you had no choice when buying the 67 GT 500 regarding the 428PI motor, which is not accurate. Some were special ordered with the 427.

Correct, and the de-tuned "W" code 427 was an option in the '68 GT's too. They were no slouch though, as they made "advertised" 390 HP and 480 LB/FT of twist! Keep in mind that they revved it up to only 4600 RPM... I'd say 420-430 HP @ 6,000 RPM which it was capable of, and then some!

There are three known 427 cars. The super snake came out of Mel Burns Ford in Long Beach, Ca. The problem was the cost. It was 7,000.00. The cost of a 427 Cobra. In stock form the 427 was rated at 425 HP. I have an early 67 Shelby. With a cam change, Ford 427 Iron heads, headers, stainless steel valves, roller rockers and simple durability changes It makes a respectable 512 horsepower and 498 pounds of torque at 5500 rpm and is completely streetable, even maintaining power brakes. There's also nothing to indicate this vehicle was a dealer installed 427 car. The registry shows this as well. Beautiful car none the less, as my Shelby is the same colors with a parchment interior.

I owned a 69 Mach 1 GT that had a 390 in it. The big blocks are kind of a pain in the ass because there's no room in the engine compartment. If you want to put headers on it you have to cut out part of the shock towers and to change the spark plugs I'd have to disconnect the motor mounts and lift the motor up and use extensions on my wrenches to get to them. It was fun as hell though. So much torque!

It's sad that that I don't know much about cars but I like this car. Could we rebuild the engine with modern methods?

best u can do is a gen 2 coyote swap if u want modern technology check out coyote swapped 60s mustangs only issues ud run into the project is the transmission housing is small cause the 60s had a 4 speed tranny at the most and modern coyotes have 6 speeds to 10 spdauto tranny, and ur gonna have to cut out the shock towers and fit a coyote conversion brace to fit the crate engine in, because the original engines are narrower that todays mustangs. my thoughts on wiring is ur gonna have to drill new holes and add new clips for the new engine wire harnesses because there is a lot more, idk if new modern wire harnesses will fit with the old gadge cluster, speedometer, and radio etc cause i never worked on a classic car.

Pete do you have a 1973 Ford Falcon GT 351XB? I hear it's one of the rarest Fords. If not you can always do a video on the 1964 Ford Falcon.

I’d take a 428 with a 427 intake manifold, like Tasca did with the Cobra Jet drag Mustangs in ‘68. All the high-end performance you need to run a quick quarter, and enough durability to drive home from the strip.

They all did. If they listed the real horsepower and torque numbers on alot of those cars insurance companies would probably refuse to cover them at all

I believe a good engine for any Ford of this era was the FE High output 390 cubic inch. Of course not for the Shelby. Had a 67 Galaxie four door post with the regular 390. Was pretty fast for stock and it could tow a boar. Lol.
