The system needs to change, with having the conflict of interest dynamic that often has men with authority…(law enforcement) who will more likely identify with the abuser (male who craves power). Way too often, women have been dismissed, invalidated, not believed, when sexual assault, violence, occurs. Who wants to depend on similar people to help you, as who hurt you? Seriously? There needs to be HUGE reform in this area. The irony is that these men, who act like they ‘already know’…arrogance…often are very ignorant to all the aspects, neuroscience, of abusers and the abused. Essentially, they will look at the variables in the equation they already agree with & throw out the rest. Which…leads to an erroneous conclusion. It should be, that there are women who respond to any domestic violence too, that they all have intensive nervous system, attachment theory, training, and learn to call out their own biases, cognitive distortions, and narratives. Having authority figures who think they have nothing to learn…are dangerous.

The families of the murderers are so delusional! Especially that dad. My blood was boiling watching him act like he won the lottery when his son was initially released. And calling him “a hero that SAVES lives in war”??! Does this pathetic excuse for a man not even know what happens in a war?! Just cause he helped an injured comrade doesn’t mean he wasn’t killing other people left and right during his time served (opposition army or not it’s still people being murdered in a war). He’s delusional beyond hope. Pretty much explains the failure his son was. Thankfully the epilogue delivered us all the much wanted justice hearing that the murderers were given life without parole. It’s a shame they even got 12 years of freedom when they belonged in jail all along. The only member of their family I feel sorry for is the little baby who is so unfortunate to be born to a murderer family.

I did some rabbit hole research into this episode. I agree that it was a horrific crime. However, the list of "evidence" that the prosecutors presented was weak. There was one shoe print that matched "the KIND OF SHOE" they HEARD one of the guys owned. There was NO cell phone data that put them at the scene. A witness, said he overheard a 'suspicious' comment. Another witness, who seemed to know certain details, was not pursued further. Why? His father was an investigator for the DA's office and his mother was a former assemblywoman who once ran for the senate. Is there more? Most likely. But based on what I read, it did NOT sound like irrefutable evidence. Sorry, but I found reasonable doubt.

Any lawyer who represents him should do their job and protect him before he testifies or gives a statement to law enforcement or the court. He admitted that he was originally planning to go hiking with the group, and he was on his way up there, in close proximity near the time of the murders. So, it's only natural to make sure he's protected and, as his attorney, make sure no one tries to tie him in as a potential third accomplice. He was clearly a witness, tried to be forthright and honest at the outset, and needed to make sure he wasn't going to get tied in with the killers. Clearly, the victim changed her mind and told him not to come hiking, most likely because someone convinced her that he wasn't welcome. He was only going to foil their plans.

@OctPSfever They had to take out witnesses cos her parents knew they came to pick her up for hiking. So it’s definitely a known person to the family and they had to silence them..

I cannot believe they found these guys guiltily. Not that they didn't do it. But that there was really no concrete evidence to support a conviction.

All that guy stated was he cared about “loyalty” from his people. A big problem. Their families are enablers of narcissistic men. Jury did the right thing. 💙

Yeahhh, the mafia, cults, are about “loyalty”. Their definition often means to go along with very rigid rules, narratives, and they can’t see, understand, anything outside of that. They are easily threatened by the complexity of life…so their “anchors” are all trying to mitigate that

Just because someone moved on to another relationship doesn’t mean they don’t harbor hate for the ex. A ridiculous thing to say by the attorney for Pape. Some people just can’t stand to lose and don’t even feel bad about killing someone. It’s about power and control.

Yes! Possessive ppl don’t take well to breakups. And if they issue death threats, one has to take them seriously because they usually see it through! It’s always the jilted crazy & possessive ex-partner. His message to Sarah about burning someone’s house down is also damning. Nobody makes that comment in jest! It speaks to the depth of his mind.
