To me, it seems like 'mujawwad' is the preferred style. My reason being, is that the message of the Qur'an is supposed to penetrate into the heart. And a slow and purposefully style would seem to do that more effectively. It would seem that the 'murratal' style would be aimed more at the mind because the style is 'hurried' and the nature of the mind is more like that. Of course, people may prefer one style over the other and that may be because that style more particularly addresses their particular nature. Even though I tend to be a very intellectual and cerebral individual and prefer to ruminate over thoughts and concepts slowly so that I can completely absorb them, the mujawwad style is much more to my liking...

on the contrary mujawwad style would occupy more of your mind to vary your modes of recitation rather than you pondering over the meaning of what your recited and thinking over the words of the Almighty. inciting emotions can even be done with musical scales tbh and i don't believe that beautification of voice should take prefernece over understanding the meaning(thinking about the events that took place when certain specific verses came etc and the commands given) and seeking guidance from the words of the Almighty. If one understands the verses they incite thoughts & emotions by their meanings plentifully. even following simple tajweed fulfills the purpose

I just realized something that I wish to share... I was just listening to Sheikh Tablawi recite suratul 55, Ar-Rahman and I I was following along in a tajweed Qur'an and I saw how after starting Ar-Rahman and going a few ayats in he went back and recited the last two ayats of suratul Qamar and started Ar-Rahman again. I observed that this the way that I personally tend to read any written material that I come across.I will read then go back over it once or twice to make sure I have retained it and to join together sequential concepts, etc. I remember we once had a teacher of Al-Islam who said the way to study any material was to read a certain number of pages then close the book and later start it again from the beginning and go past the point where we last finished by a few pages and then close the book again and come back later and start from the beginning and go past the point where we last left off by a few pages, etc. This process continues until the material finished and seven such readings in this manner could lead to a very complete comprehension of the material. I see this same rationale in the mujawwad style... Perhaps the murratal style is for times when there is not a lot of time...

Mashallah thank you so much for this KZread channel it's of great benefit. I had a question. The maqamat in reality are a Persian/Arabian set if musical tunes. You seem speak of them as though they are are integral part of Quran recitation. I have seen a video by major Al Azhar recitors clearly stating that maqamat are to be avoided and that all the major Egyptian recitors of the previous century did not know or use maqamat. Could you kindly enlighten us on the issue of maqamat?

Elad Latikbil Salaam Elad Latikbil, I too have heard such an argument that melodious recitation is to avoided. However, recently I was reading "The Book of Assistance" by Imam Abdallah Ibn Alawi Al-Haddad (1634 CE - 1720 CE; 1044 Hijri - 1132 Hijri) and in the chapter entitled, "On Reciting the Qur'an" Imam Al-Haddad states, "Beware of concentrating, while reciting, on reciting a large amount to the exclusion of reflection and correct recitation. You must reflect and comprehend while you recite; slow, melodious recitation will assist you in this. Feel in your heart the Magnitude of the Speaker (Transcendent and Exalted is He!) and that you are before Him, reciting His Book to Him, in which He addresses His commands, prohibitions, counsels and exhortations to you. When reading verses on unification and glorification be full of reverence and awe, when reading verses of promises and threats be full of hopeful expectation and apprehension, and when reading the commands and prohibitions be thankful, acknowledge your shortcomings, ask for forgiveness and determine to show your ardour." It would seem that with the use of a musical quality or melody in the voice one would be able to express that varied emotions and intents more easily than without melody to the voice. I, for one, appreciate a certain amount of this in a qari. My favorite is Sheikh Tablawi. I who was a convert to Al-Islam was entranced when I first heard qur'anic recitation and I think that the melody affects the emotion (mind and heart) of the listener. For instance, Az Zabuwr (the Psalms) are meant to be sung. I am not trying to compare the Illustrious Qur'an with az-Zabuwr of malik Da-wud (AS), I am just saying that a musical quality has an ability to affect emotion. And in accord with what I just stated, I also read this today, from the book "Spiritual Discernment" by Watchman Nee, "The mind is the most active part of the soul. It used to be like a wild horse, but now it is being restrained by the will. And the will is in cooperation with the spirit...Emotion is the lowest, the most unreasonable, part of the soul; yet it exerts the greatest power in swaying the will. Whatever emotion is attached to, the will will usually agree." With this sentiment, it would seem that a melodious quality to recitation would help in affecting the emotion of the listener and bring their will in accord and lean it toward responding to the Qur'an. My testimony is that it did in my case (m' shallah). I hope this may have been of some benefit. Let me know your thoughts on this. Thank you and good studies to you! As-Salaam alay-kum!

But when Prophet صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم used to get any revelation and then he used to recite the verces to his sahabah he would recite in mujawwad. But again its just my opinion.

I honestly don't really know and I find it rather bizarre to be honest, personally I like to keep it simple. The one theory I've heard floating around is that it helps the reciter hear their voice/pitch better, but I don't really know for sure. I remember reciting once in a very large hall and the acoustics were such that it threw me off - hard to explain exactly but basically what I was doing in my head was slightly different than what the room was throwing back at my ears, and it affected my reading. So it might be that. Like a stage monitor setup that helps the person hear themselves better. And Allah knows best
