What do they expect to happen when you have people getting in through the back doors? Do they want an honor system? You try that in the 70s or 80s the driver would get up and call you out. Sometimes he wouldn't move the bus until that person paid or got off.

You don't need fare inspectors! Just do it like how it was 10-15 years ago when you had everyone pay at the front of the bus by the driver! I swear Muni and SFMTA have no common sense.

Everyone should have to tap even if they ride for free. Not tapping sends the wrong message and make others think they are riding for free. They need to update their systems so everyone taps even those using cell phones. Kids should get a kids clipper card when they register for school and be required to tap.

Who sit on the bus and watch if others people tap and develop or create a mental message though? I have thought of the lost revenue but I paid my fare not getting upset b.c bus bums and non pay riders. They need to just get back to front door loading and collect fares( if services are in financial strait). Riders may not like it, but you understand why and service must be funded.

Lies. It doesn't matter to them what percentage doesn't pay. They want to use the fare evading fines ($50-$124) as a source of income, to fund an agency that wastes millions every year. The original goal decades ago, was to make Muni free for residents. So all revenue from parking and traffic fines was merged into SFMTA. Later taxicab permit fees was also merged into SFMTA. But SFMTA is a money pit. No matter how many millions are added, SFMTA always manages to find ways to spend more and more. The real problem is that SFMTA officials (and employees Union too) never cared to operate within the available budget. They ALWAYS overspend, in employee overtime, in wasteful purchases, in unnecessary expenditures, pay lawsuit settlements for property damages due to inept Muni drivers, repair damaged buses due to poor judgement of Muni drivers, etc. IF the only problem was 20% unpaid fares, then they wouldn't have such a huge budget deficit.

Bingo the only comment that makes sense on here. SFMTA cannot handle money even if it had 100% funding and much more, they'll find a way to overspend and run up a huge deficit. It's like giving a spoiled teen your credit card.

I take the SF Muni everyday and more often than not, I see fare evaders waltz on without paying from the back doors. One time, I saw a young adult board and stood next the door with $2.50 in her hand just in case she has to walk to the front to pay. She exited with the same $2.50 in her hand when she got off at her stop 😡

Bus drivers are not doing their jobs that's all. In the 1990s you try to get on a bus without paying, the bus driver won't drive until you get off and trust me, with other passengers giving you the evil eye-- they get off. Now, bus driver's don't want to confront in fear of violence and city is worried about lawsuit. We lost our ways.

20% of riders and 100% of a certain demographic that thinks the world owes them something. Muni is funded by tax dollars not fares. Fares go into pockets of the board. So not paying for something we already pay in taxes.
