Yeah. Part of what makes the Cats movie so weird and bad is how they try to make the humans look like real cats. In the musical, the costumes aren't supposed to look realistic. And the entire spirit of the musical is lost in the movie.

Much of this would be solved if animation weren't considered a lesser way to do movies, I rather have an stylized animated musical about cats animated by Disney, Pixar, DreamWorks or EVEN ilummination before whatever Cats the movie was ...in fact, a fantasy adventure musical like lyberynth with practical effects would fit right toO, no people cats XD

But just because it's original doesn't mean it's better, and many productions prefer the upbeat versions-the song has been revised three times throughout the years-ever since the Broadway production introduced it.

The thing is, I'd agree that it's like a fever dream, but it all makes sense within the context of the musical somehow? It's not like some dreams where there's no logic to it; it's more like climbing into another world where the logic is different but still solid. Point is, I'm in the same boat- I watched Cats when it came out on this channel in May, then I watched it again the next day, then when it got taken down I bought it and have watched it close to 50 more times since then. I absolutely love everything about this, and these two are definitely among my favourites :P

I felt the same way! I'd heard a lot about the new movie, and about the backlash, but wanted to get a more rounded opinion as I hadn't seen the musical. At first I was like "ok that was a fever dream, but it was charming and I liked a lot of the songs and characters). Next thing you know, I'm listening to the soundtrack daiky and looking to introduce my friends to it lol. It's still a bit bizarre, but as you said, it's charming, and you can tell that a lot of work and love went into it.

Rympleteazer's voice is so cute! Especially when she says her name.

You can't *truly* fake an emotion. Even fake tears and panic attacks stem from a mild form of method acting in which the actor/actress thinks back to a sad/scary time in their life and brings those emotions to the forefront. Likewise, you can't fake this kinda enthusiasm. These two were having a ball. And there's nothing at all to be done about that ;)

I love these two. They're so funny, and the best duo of this whole musical. Drew Varley and Jo Gibb had a natural chemistry.

the little faces they give each other at the very end when the bags go over their heads. truly two little siblings that ALMOST got away with it 😆

Can you just imagine how brilliant the film would have been if we had of had a version of this song sang like this in it. This is the best version out there. Why did they go for the slow and more poetic version for the film!?

When you and your friend are both Imposters in Among Us

The difference between this one and the version we got in the film is staggering. The one in the movie has totally different instrumentation, time signature, and even vocal delivery that make it sound more like just a straight-up villain's song. But for this version, all that is much more playful, which signifies what their characters are supposed to be (which is to say, mischievous). But Hooper just wholesale changed the characterization of basically all of the characters because he wanted to have traditional villains

I absolutely love their dance number! When I was a child, if I could learn to do the things they do, I'd explode from joy. I learned ballet for a few years, but I was constantly told to stop moving around so much. They told me I was "very flexible, but too hyperactive to be graceful".

Drew Varley, Jo Gibb, accept no substitutes! The best performance ever!!😃😃

Apparently in the Original Broadway cast this wasn't a duet; it was a song about them, but the siblings didn't actually show up and sing. Personally I think that this is the funniest moment in the entire musical.

The original London production had them sing the song together but the song was slower and had a different feel, while the Broadway production introduced this upbeat version with the 7/8 patter part but it was sung by Mr. Mistoffelees, and Mungojerrie and Rumpelteazer were represented by two kittens in costume. It was the Vienna production that combined the two into the number as we know it now.

I'm absolutely impressed with their breath support. In the 2019 movie musical, you can hear the actors struggling to sing and have breath support whenever they're like, jumping or doing any sort of movement while singing. But these two can literally do high kicks and hold up each other and not sound like they're struggling in the slightest. Absolutely impressive.

I remember seeing in an interview that Andrew Lloyd Webber went to T.S Elliots wife beforehand and asked what she thought T.S Elliot would want, she agreed that making them look more like something out of Hot Gossip was what he pictured, as he originally turned down Disney, not wanting them to be turned into cartoon kitty-cats ☺️

Actually, T. S. Eliot was, even during his life, infamous for being horribly awkward, intensely conservative and restrictive regarding sexuality, bodily expression and the like. Considering the emphasis the show puts on it, it's pretty likely he'd absolutely despise it. But he was a trash human being as a whole, so that's not necessarily a bad thing. He had terribly abusive tendencies as evidenced by his first marriage, so it's not unlikely his widow took a post-mortem jab at him by approving Weber's proposal. As for the Eliot estate, their entire worth depends on maintaining a good image of Eliot and his legacy, they wouldn't dare tarnish it with what he was actually like.
