It takes a legend to know another - the praise for Mr. Lee Kuan Yew from a legend like Mr. Munger speaks volumes of Mr. Lee Kuan Yew's achievements and at the same time showcases to the world how Mr. Munger and Mr. Buffett keep improving themselves by reading and learning from the best in the world. Its a shame that Mr. Munger and Mr. Lee never met each other. Had they done so 30 years ago, Singapore would probably be one of the largest investors in Berkshire Hathaway and it would have cemented the relationship between extremely intelligent leaders who act with Rationality and with highest degree of Ethics and integrity......

CM: “if you will make a study of the life and work of Lee Kuan Yew, you will find one of the most interesting and instructive political stories written in the history of mankind. This is better than Athens… this is this an unbelievable history, and you will learn a lot that will be useful in your own life. So my answer to you is, don't ask Charlie Munger, study the life and work of Lee Kuan Yew, you're going to be flabbergasted.” - LKY is a legend, the depth, breadth and multi dimensional thinking of LKY's thinking is exceptional and inimitable.

In reality , perhaps maybe it's due to the Chinese culture, most Chinese are very practical and " down to earth ". Deng Xiaoping's visit to meet Lee Kuan Yew to in a way seek wisdom & advice + following & expediting Mr Lee's advice with short, mid & long term plans is indeed INSTRUMENTAL in putting China back on track and on to quantum progress proven results flying colors in these 30 to 40 years science, technology and trade makng the China so successful and prosperous as compared to many RE-GRESSING Nations in the west. If you may watch many of the interviews of Lee Kuan Yew you will see a very similar philosophy like Deng Xiaoping , ( who sensed that there was something wrong with the Chinese management/ governance system during the cultural revolution & came to Singapore in 1978 to seek wisdom and advice from Mr Lee ) Metaphorically, "Regardless of whether it's a Black cat or white cat as long as the cat CAN FUNCTION & do its job & catch the mice its a good can " Whatever way, the most important factor is that it must work ! Hence in the case of China, after Premier Deng consulted Mr. Lee & He went back to China and diligently carried out what Lee Kuan Yew advised him , ADAPTED the principle to suit China & carry out the short-term mid-term and long-term visions with a goal, purpose & direction. ( Not just talk about it and put it aside ) Hence , 1. In reality " AT PRESENT Communism " it's only a name/term in China. 2. We fully understand that the communism management was bad during the cultural revolution the country of China and the people suffered ingrate lack and poverty. 3. Thankfully by 1978 , the then leader Deng Xiaoping , RECOGNISED and had the GUTS & HUMILITY ( unlike the leaders of the western world today who will always tend to blame anybody else except themselves ) to accept that their management/ governance of the country had some serious problems that can to a collapse. 4. Rather than , sitting down doing nothing , enjoying life and "sweeping everything under the carpet of self-deception", he decided to face reality and seek help regardless of who it was as long as it is moral , honest and it works. 5. So in 1978 he came to Singapore , under The proven successful leadership of the father of the nation and prime minister Lee Kuan Yew ( who is also of Chinese descent ) , we reckon one of the best leaders of the world to a workable solution and advice. 8. Deng Xiaoping the great leader was very humble, to learn from Lee Kuan Yew and went back to China to embark on a new direction with short-term mid-term long-term plans/visions. With his willingness & tenacity to carry out and implement principles that will bring the necessary changes and the correct outcome ( proven after 35 to 40 years ). To change the label called " communism " may cause bloodshed and Civil war. Deng Xiaoping's philosophy of : Black cat or white cat , as long as the cat can function and know how to catch mice ( metaphorically ) , it's a good cat. This is quite similar to Lee Kuan Yew was philosophy ( probably the Chinese are more practical and prefer to have things workable in the real world as compared to many purists in the West who has a many theoretical and impractical " lab like " solutions ( often not implemented & implemented with a goal and a time frame ) , resulting in just "castles in the air ie mere talk" 6. So if we look closely and analyze, it's QUITE LIKELY that the China success can also be attributed to following ( not just mere talking BUT putting what is said into action ) another country like Singapore and a person that is successful like Lee Kuan Yew. 8. In REALITY if you go to Singapore & China and SEE for YOURSELF, many of the principles of governance and management are quite similar. "Democracy, communism or socialism or the best of both worlds a mixture " is just terminology. An important point to note, is that Lee Kuan Yew ( you can check it out in his speeches in the KZread ) he is a very futuristic visionary way ahead of his time. He's in favor of free trade & somewhat capitalism. But not in favour of letting businessmen or corporations cross the parameters & control the government and the government policies SACRIFICING the OVERALL GOOD for the PEOPLE. This BAD SYNDROME is quite evident in many Western countries. 9. Today Singapore continues to move forward because Singapore hasn't stopped learning, and has also learnt many good things from China & progress, prosper & advance together. 10. In Singapore & China ,very possibly only the better or best candidates are chosen to lead. Good Leadership is not chosen based on a "popularity contest." 11. There's also the advantage of giving a good leadership ( as long as they don't " fall into the dark side of the force " ) , given a LONGER TERM ( not just 5 to 6 years ) to implementing good things/policies to build up the "solidify " the country in all aspects. There are certainly advantages and disadvantages in this principle. However, in my opinion in the case of Singapore & China the LONGER RULING TERM given to a good leader like Lee Kuan Yew , ERADICATES the chances of stunting progress and ensuring consistent and rapid TANGIBLE progress. UNLIKE the west , the constant change of leadership and presidents in 5 to 6 years , has brought progress & re-gress repeatedly. Very often , the new leader or president undo or destroy the good done by the previous administration AT THE EXPENSE of the PEOPLE of the nation & an utter wastage of the taxpayers money and the country's precious resources. 12. The West especially the biased media often tries to mislead and deceive the public especially the people in Western countries that China is like North Korea. And the people in China are "oppressed & in great lack ". 13. The majority of the common people , have of a reasonably good life , consistent improvement of standards of living. A very OBVIOUS point to note is that very likely because of Chinese culture, Lee Kuan Yew who is also a strong believer of good education and building human capital ( in Singapore 77% are Chinese ) , the Chinese BELIEVE IN and PRIORITISES, INVESTS in human capital , especially education, training & infrastructure. We can see these traits that when the migrants/entrepreneurs from China around 150 to 200 years ago came to Malaya & Singapore , when they prospered, very often they invested and donated much in education not just for their own descendants but very often they will built schools & educational institutions to benefit others. Thus this will put them on the cycle of consistent improvement of their standard of living. "Charity begins at home " so this mentality is brought from generation to generation, to society & eventually to governance. That's maybe why , their PRIORITY is invest more money especially on education in the people ( human capital ) than war & the military complex 🤭. Only recently that had to invest more on the military ( but out of the " piggy bank " not by " future money on credit card " ) because the US was sending the military threats to close proximity to China. HYPOTHETICALLY, if another country like China using the same American terminology " freedom of navigation " set up a base in Cuba , which is very close to Florida there will be a great. "furore " 🤣🤣🤣 Given the opportunity one should TRY to VISIT China and Singapore and see cum find out for themselves that the 85% to 95 % people in China like in Singapore are generally quite happy with their government and the management the country, their PERSONAL & COLLECTIVE degree of freedom as OPPOSED to the DECEPTIVE impression often painted by the West ( to cover up their incumbent western style governance ) 14. The US like Cyrus Janssen has OFTEN emphasized should : A. Invest more in the people of the United States Not war ( unless they have some personal benefits ). B. Not due to self-deception blame China for its domestic woes. Face your own problems and settle your own internal problems like a man ( not a "Peter Pan in mansize clothings " & "keep passing the buck around " Because reality and the truth will always be reality ! C. Trillions have gone down the drain in wars no purpose. D. While you still have a bleak chance. Try to concentrate more on being friendly and trade for a " win win "to least attempt bring some economic progress to the US & at least after the years of neglect start rebuilding the American people & your OWN country.

For a man reputed for his laconicism, Charlie Munger has gone over the top to gush over an unlikely idol…someone who had never managed a profit-and-loss business. The history of Singapore is still unfolding, and is too short for long-term prognostication. In another 50 years if Singapore should hold up, I would agree with him whole-heartedly that the thoughts and practices of LKY in governance would be the stuff of standard academic texts the world over.

Its a different situation building a nation from nothing and trying to achieve greater heights from first world status. I think LKY has done his job well, now its up to the next generation to live their ways.

@ Ken Yap Problem is I'm not sure the current government understood what was LKY's "Old ways". He was pragmatic, and not ideological. He wasn't perfect, but like Charlie Munger said, what he did, was intelligent decisions suited for hour circumstances. If he was alive today, he would have adopted a different system for a different time. I have no doubt about that.

Lky is nothing compared to DXP. Singapore is only a small island state. Every 3rd tier Chinese state is bigger and more modern than Singapore. Xi JP is another great leader. Compare apple with apple, not a grape with a jack fruit. And we in Singapore are lky cash cow. And no country succeeded without the support from its citizens no matter how good is the leader. But lky admirers like to give him all the credit. Lky is a lawyer and is a 'gentleman' who constantly turn black to white and people (pathetic} are thanking him.

@@uniforce101 nobody is comparing Lee and Deng ..they both admired each other..i am just informing the audiences of who Lee admired most ...whereas LKY is know to the west and honored...Deng never received the same status....not even in China..He is acknowledged as the architect of China's modernisation...but he never receive the god like adoration of Mao ! Maybe just like Lee..he refused to be worshiped .. My admiration of both of them is their pragmatism.. After living so many years. ...I am still amazed..how few people..bright..highly educated...intelligent...do not have the quality of pragmatic vision !

@@ganboonmeng5370 I am adding on to your initial post. Others here are comparing and am basically letting them know they should not compare. Deng send lky off when lky wanted to meet Deng through an interpreter. Deng refuses to see lky when as a Chinese cannot speak Chinese. Lky came back and revived Chinese classes in schools. There are many secret about lky. Once known don't think people will respect him any more. One obvious thing is the Lee family is still holding onto power in Singapore and now waiting for the 3rd generation to take over. Pragmatism is good but together with greed it is not a good combination. Go Google Lee & Lee lawyer and find out what they do and come back and tell me if you still admire lky.

@@ganboonmeng5370 There are blind spots we are not aware. What is fact is lky dismantle the old Nanyang University because it was considered communist. He only revived it after his failed attempt to meet DXP. If you said DXP met him in Singapore, my question is, what great work had lky done at that time for DXP to come. The President of China coming to an island that just started off. Of course history is written by the winner. This type of embarrassment i don't think he will write into history. Like we were actually a thriving trading hub during Raffles time and have the tallest building in South Asia and not a backward fishing village like he said.

Carlos de Souza Its not about dictatorship, its about efficacy and success. You can have a system of people coming together making things work or have one person rising up above others to lead and bring success to everyone but you can also have people coming together and not have things work or a person rising above others to cause hardship to everyone. You see, the problem is people tend to stereotype certain ideologies and government method and judge others based on the negative examples. You can never have a satisfying answer this way. I mean look at the word communism and communist, there are alot of people using these words in their sentence to insult and defame others. Little did they know the definition and ideology of it was to create a equal society where all citizens and people share their wealth and property. It so happens that such idea did not work in the real world we live in, and in turn created some dictators which exploited the system. The moral of the story here is to judge people based on what they have done and the results they've produced and not by stereotyping them.

Your views are too simple. Who made USSR the superpower? Russia used to be the weakest chain in the west imperialism world that lost the war to Japan, and lost the ww1. But just within such a short time, Russia rises as the superpower. It just took the country 30 years! Of course, they paid a huge and painful prize. But Lenin and Stalin made their nation unbeatable. Even today, who dares to invade Russia including the Americans? No one. That is the contribution of the two leader, but the prize paid is also heavy. In China Mao is the same. Before CCP rise, every western country even tiny one could invade China. But just 1 year after PRC born, Mao challenges Americans in Korea. Only when this war is fought, the age of the chinese darkest century draws a period. 1840 opium war to 1949 PRC, chinese struggled to survive for 109 years. Never the less, the mistakes made by Mao is far less than Stalin. Western propaganda will always demonise leaders they don't like. Too many lies.
