The 1971 World Cup in Mexico (Mundial) is as unknown as it's unbelievable. Here is the story of a tournament out of the ordinary.
One year after the first unofficial World Cup in Italy in 1970, members of the International Federation and European Women's Soccer Federation (IEWSF) are organizing a second event in Mexico. Six teams are invited to play this FIFA Women's World Cup not recognized by FIFA:
• Mexico
• Argentina
• France
• England
• Denmark
• Italy
The six teams are divided into two groups of three with in group A Mexico, Argentina and England; and in group B France, Denmark and Italy. After incredible events, Mexico has benefited from a very advantageous refereeing throughout the tournament, and Denmark are in the final.
The young Danish Susanne Augustesen, aged only 15 at the time, made a hat-trick (3 goals in a row) in front of the 110,000 spectators gathered at the Azteca Stadium in Mexico City. A unique feat in the history of the Football World Cups. In the end, Denmark won 3 goals to 0 against Mexico and retains its title of world champion gleaned a year earlier in Italy. In the early 1970s, Denmark is the best women's team in the world.
Composition of the teams from Denmark and Mexico in the 1971 Mundial final:
Denmark : S.Klems, Hansen, A.Westberg, Nielsen, Frederiksen, Pedersen, Kamp (78 M.Jensen), L.I.Nielsen, H.Hansen, K.Jensen, S.Augustesen.
Mexico : Aracen, Chavez (De La Rosa), Orduna, Coronado, Perez, Huerta, Zaragoza, Aguilar, Rubio (56 Rangel), Hernandez.

Amazing that this was hidden from the world. A patriarchal society has been so tragic for most women. The women who took part in this are incredible trail blazers - they deserve recognition. Plus thank you to the men that supported them..

I wonder how many other players have managed to get a hattrick all with the wrong foot? Not to mention doing it in a World Cup final.
