Munchies: Mexicali Taco & Co.
Ойын-сауық
For the second ever Munchies episode shot in LA we chose the gentlemen from Mexicali Taco & Co., Esdras Ochoa and Javier Fragrosso. We wanted to do an episode on Mexicali because we stopped there after a shoot a few months back and were blown away by how good the food was without a whiff of pretension. Take one bite of their shrimp tacos or the carne asada Vampiro and you are transported to a new level of tacqueria consciousness where there is no going back to greasy meat and subpar tortillas.
The Mexicali crew decided to take us on a wildly varied food tour around LA. The first stop was supposed to be at Daily Dose Cafe, they were closed, so we just headed to the Park's Finest. We have never filmed at a Filipino restaurant before, let alone a Filipino BBQ spot. Johnny, the owner, tried to do us in by unloading every imaginable dish, with highlights being the BBQ tritip with horseradish cream sauce and the traditional coconut beef. After saying our goodbyes we headed west to Beverly Hills to the country's only kosher Mexican restaurant owned by the country's only hockey-playing Japanese-Mexican gourmet chef, Katsuji Tanabe. Here we had carnita tacos, the "McKosher" burger, and fried chicken and waffles. Chef Tanabe braises beef in duck fat to mimic the taste and texture of pork, which gives his clientele an idea of the flavor profile of the original dish. These guys were is such a serious food coma when we got back to Mexicali, that it took all they had to whip up more food and eat it for our greedy camera. Enjoy!

One of the only Munchies I've seen where they didnt get drunk before making their way back to their restaurant to cook.
Que orgullo! Yo tambien soy de Mexicali y me encanta que ustedes estan ahi representando y compartiendo nuestra increible comida con el mundo! How awesome! I'm from Mexicali too and I love that you guys are out there representing and sharing out amazing food with the world! Keep it up guys, you're making us all proud back home!

+MademoiselleLapin The only time people watch Munchies lol :)
Guys, I was one of your first customers! We moved to Chinatown around the same time. I use to hit up that truck across Bahia. Thanks to that Asian dude for believing in these cats. Great food but you can't down LA's Mexican food scene. If anything you should be giving it "props mejor". LA is THE MECCA in the US for all kinds of Mexicans from every region of Mexico. So, the cuisines can really differ. Northern Mexico, Baja, Yukatan, Mexico City, Nayarit, Sinaloa, Oaxaca, Jalisco, Durango, Veracruz, Guadalajara, Puebla, etc etc. Even each restaurant has their own twist on their region. There are literally, THOUSANDS of Mexican places to eat and more popping up every day. From old school traditional to new school fusion and nuvo fancy.

6:22, the struggle of getting a sausage.
Can't wait to begin exploring this food!
AMAZING VIDEO, amazing job guys!! you're livin' the dream!!
This is awesome. Reminds me of what we kind of did in our Mexican restaurant. I love seeing restaurants like this succeed. Props to them. Wish I had stayed longer to see my restaurant grow.
Finally a good munchies episode! Nice Job Vice and Thanks, keep up the good work!
The owner of the Mexicali is actually very very nice. ( i live 2 blocks away from mexicali)

yea hella good. they dip their tortilla chips on their beef fat for flavor XD
The tacos actually IN Mexicali are the realest tacos EVER.... gonna have to try these! NICE episode Vice...
incredible! a hipster free episode of Munchies.
I really like this episode - a lot of the other featured groups have been way higher-budget, but these dudes do the same rounds of their favorites and feel the same pride for their food as the others. it's nice to be reminded that passion for fine food doesn't just exist on the 5-star-restaurant or daring-hole-in-the-wall equivalent to high fashion.
FINALLY! Another Munchies at long last.
6:20 bro struggling with the sausage lol
"No good tacos in LA" "In LA, you won't find real asada." Where in LA did these guys grow up? Westside? These guys come off a bit pompous. LA has the largest Mexican community outside Mexico, many being born there, and there wasn't good Mexican food before they've showed up? LA has the best Mexican food outside Mexico, that's why people have raved so much about it before these guys came along. It's like saying there's no good bagels in New York.

Al Bundy I'm sorry Al Bundy, I didn't realize you were the leading expert Mexican food and culture outside of Mexico. You can barely even feed your kids man.

Al Bundy Yeah I ate there and the tortillas were cold... really ruined the experience, far from being the best tacos. The cachetada was pretty good tho.

Al Bundy you're high if you think LA has better Mexican than Texas. Its not even close.

Noneya Bizness You're high if you think Texas has better Mexican food than LA. The Mexican food in Texas is nothing more than watered down, cheese-ladened Tex-Mex made to appeal to gringos. In LA, the food is legit and as close as it gets to being in Mexico.
I will be stopping there on my next trip south! Can't wait to taste the food! It looks so good
vice munchies needs to go international...!!!
This is better than watching TV....
LOL they got a to go box. i love these guys
love it when there not hipsters that just enjoy the sound of there own voices!!! proper people proper food!!
These guys are humble and good natured...When I am in L.A I will support them
Okay, so I saw this and decided to drive there tonight. All I can say is that they are doing it right! Best place to eat by far, it is hard to find a place with real food and perfect tortillas. My new favorite place!
Finally a munchies episode with no hipsters or cussing.
Next time I'm on Cali, I'm going to eat at your restaurant!!!
I had Mexicali when they were serving from the parking lot on 1st & beaudry, next to my apt complex Prom Towers. Everything is bomb there, the carne asada nachos with that nacho cheese. I'm glad to see these guys doing well !!!
Only reason why I try not to watch Munchies is that it makes me incredibly hungry.
" The IN-N-OUT of tacos" That's a vision Bro!! Good Luck..
If im ever in cali, im at mexicali for sure. Looks fantastic.

Awesome, this is real Mexican food. Great doc. Thanks VICE.
Freaking about time you release a new Munchies!!!
This is what Munchies is suppose to be. A story about the come up and how they got to where they are as successful chefs and restaurant owners WHILE they eat food. Not hipsters running around Brooklyn getting wasted over and over and over.
Im From LA and i can tell you that there is good mexican food everywhere!!
This is the first munchies that made me hungry
The last time I tried these tacos was in 09!!!... remembering when they catered to my job and fell for the al pastor...the whole menu is good...probably go this week to eat some VAMPIROS 🧛♂️
This is soooooo cool I was born in the imperial valley right next to mexicali!!!
Lotsa great vittles and kosher mexican, i'd really like to try it, thumbs up guys!!
I'm checking this place out! Keep up the great work, bro!

It all looked great.
It's the food you brought with you from Europe, all those delicious turnips and cabbages !
i wish there were decent mexican food in the Toronto area...everyone here thinks chipotle is real mexican food.
good job on the video, very entertaining
damn damn damn!!!! gotta hit this place the next time I'm in L.A.!
Funny how it's still light outside, that summer sun.
I would eat here all the time. I hope one day there is a Mexiicalli in every city in the US soon. Preferably Louisville Ky
I just ate and you guys are making me hungry again.
Trying this next time i go to LA.
I'm going to this place next time i'm in LA!
Humble men from humble beginings
Shrimp tacos looked pretty damn good.........
Those sopes where so gooooood here
Finally an interesting episode.
I don't even have a taco bell within an hour's drive from where I live. Mexicali, come to Ontario. Lol.
Dammit I want some!!! Gotta take a flight to the west coast again!
I like that we don’t have to stay open all night
Very very bad idea to watch this late at night. So freaking hungry right now god dang it.
That looks great
Men with a vision. I can dig it.
Its time to visit Mexicali Taco & Co. !!
I enjoy this video so much. I am from Mexicali. Se me antojaron unos tacos de PASTOR.
Park's Finest is so good!! (esp for the price!)
What a great example of the old fashion american dream!
This series is really great but it would be awesome to see them do some more countries other than the US
I totally agree man, they are so fine!
i live in mexico so i get the best taco level xD , not to brag about mexican food but its very tasty and a lot of variety , soups etc . Im pretty sure anyone could like :)
When you say "Aliens" I always think of E.T. XD.
If I ever go to LA again I know where to go.
It's refreshing to see a Munchies episode where the restaurant owners don't get shitfaced.
Maria Jane brought me here! Mas tacos por favor!!!!
Mexicali for asada tacos, San Felipe for fish tacos, Ensenada for cabeza tacos, and Cabo for pink tacos!
omg I want to go to these places
I would love to be in the car with them eating & chilling LA Style!!!
who else saw him on the final table?? love this place
Mexicali, la capital gastronomica de todo Mexico!
Todo pa'delante mi Jente...
LOOKS TOO GOOD
Man I hope his dream comes true. I don't live anywhere near California but I want a MexiCali here.
Don't be a hater. I love th hustle of the Mexican people. Yes, Im a black man. Keep it up Latin homies.
Taco's started from just putting leftovers in a soft tortilla. It sure has evolved a long way.
i can see you do some traditional style cooking just like Mexicali street food but you do a little bit more modern style..i like it!!! Grew up in El Centro and living far away now lol miss my good Baja Style Mexican!!!
SI LA VAN ASER CARNALES , JUST KEEP DOING WHAT YA DOING AND KEEP PUSHING LIKE WE ALWAYS DO, SI SE PUEDE
I'm from Mexicali, Baja California, and that kind of tacos are the ones that are traditional in Mexicali, so basically those are real mexican tacos, and they are fucking delicious!
Let him be. He's honoring a time-tested tradition we have in Latin America of compulsively talking shit about each other for no discernible reason.
Next stop in LA I'm getting some tacos!
Those tacos are also traditional in my town in Zamora, Michoacan and thats southwest Mexico. They are pretty much traditional in the entire Mexico not restricted to one state. I see it like a cheap quick meal that satisfies kind of like pizza its simple bread sauce cheese pepperoni, tacos you have tortilla beef or whatever kind of meat you want on it like al pastor, arrachera, birria, buche, sesos, whatever infinite toppings. My uncle owns a taqueria in Zamora and serve pretty much the same food.
Can de talk about Esdras Job in the final table? God, he made it far and always using tradicional flavors
tell em dont ever get outa business. im movin there in a few years, im bouta come by bunch of times. this is the kinda food i like lol
now I really want some Taco's
Come to NYC! ♥
I'll give these guys some credit but being in LA resident when the guy says "HERE IN LA YOU WON'T FIND REAL ASADA" & "DUDE THEIRS NO GOOD TACOS HERE IN LA" Are you freaking kidding me??? Theirs good tacos spots like every other block!!! My personal fav is Tacos El Pecas on 7th & Soto in Boyle Heights
