Neumanns are so clear and pleasant to listen to. Started many Years ago with the 310, after that the 120 and now i'm ,,arrived,, with the KH750 (soon 2nd one) + KH150 and MA1 DSP Correction. Theyre crystal clear and analytic but also very fun and you get an Fullrange Sound with these combo. I've heard the HS-8 against the HS-7 and the 8 is my preference as they offer greater bass extension and are an inexpensive way to get into monitoring if you have a microphone and you're willing to EQ to correct for the slight bass gain and upper treble bump. Any speaker with an 8" woofer will work best in either a well-damped room or an absolutely massive one. Same issue with the Behringer. I thought the Behringer sounded quite nice and relaxed, but it was somehow even further from being monitor-ready than the HS-8. The Hedd seem to be carrying a bit of extra energy in the treble region but they do sound quite excellent, right up until the cymbal crash with it's funky decay. Initial crash was beautiful, crisp and clean, but the decay just didn't sound right at all. Honestly, all of these sound quite good, particularly the Behringer at their price point. The Hedd do definitely sound dynamic, but their decay on certain instrumentation seems off, a bit too long and shimmery, which is unfortunately common with AMT tweeters. I think the only AMT tweeters I've heard that didn't exhibit this were the ones that GoldenEar designed. I do have to give them credit for inadvertently designing a monitor that serves better as a standard bookshelf speaker. It's got some midbass gain, a bit of treble gain and it sounds dynamic, but I feel you would struggle to monitor on them accurately. Not to discredit them, they're nice speakers and if you like the AMT sound then you'll like them. They've got a good woofer and a pretty good AMT. The Neumann, I think, in a damped listening environment, might be one of my favorites of this comparison. It's got good imaging, detail, and a surprising amount of bass extension without having massive apparent gain tuned in. The decay in the bass and mids are very natural but seems slightly fast in the treble. The vocal track sounded the most natural on the Neumann, with just the right amount of balance between the female and male vocal presentation without seeming to shift her voice up half a register. Definitely the most neutral of the ones that have a good amount of dynamism despite their neutrality. Once again another monitor that could totally work just as a standard bookshelf. Lovely little speaker. I will say, regarding very analytical speakers, the KEF iQ90, for consumer towers, are quite analytical. Their tweeter is incredibly fast, almost at the level of an AMT, so they pull details out like crazy and the woofers are also quick on the impulse, which makes them a pain in the ass to try to pair with a subwoofer. I still haven't found them fatiguing to listen to due to their detail. Just have to be careful what source I run them off to make sure it doesn't have a V or U shaped house tuning because it'll come right through and be super apparent.

The Yamaha sounded very close to what I have on my CD, while the HEDD comes as a very close second. I loved them both, but especially the HEDD for the bass. Awesome comparison! On my end...via Sennheiser HD 650, most detail is revealed with Neumann KH 120 ($749 ea. or $1,498 pair @ Vintage King or Sweetwater), including most audibility and clarity regarding spectral components, tonality, timbre, sound field placement and motion, reverb tails and even subtle nuances of instruments, instrumental performances, vocals and vocal performances. The ruler-flat response graph is no surprise. There is sufficient bass there...and very usable, yet it is not quite as apparent or accurate as the amazing HEDD Type 07, which is also reflected by the distortion graphs. A KH 750 (10" sub with DSP...; $1,695.00 @ Vintage King or Sweetwater) could be added to fill out the bass down to 20 Hz (crossover @ 80 Hz; bandwidth ~= 20-300 Hz), including DSP alignment with the 120s--which would relieve the 120s of the distortion zone lows. Also, quality headphones could aid bass/lows choices. For very critical listening while tracking and mixing, and for small footprint and portability..., I prefer the Neumann. The HEDD Type 07 price at Vintage King is $1,299.00 each, which is $2,598 per pair. The KH 120s are about $1,100.00 less than a pair of HEDD Type 07s--which makes them a very good option and bang for buck deal for an excellent tool. Thank you for such an awesome comparison.

    I'm an avid HEDD user and have extensively listenend to both the Type 05 & 07 on their own, and with a range of capable active subwoofers. They have the same AMT-driver (also in the Type 20, 30 and Tower Mains) with a crossover point of 2.3kHz, so you can experiment and build a €2-3000 full range system that competes with the very best in their price range and above. The mid/bass driver on the Type 07 is plenty fast, but the smaller Type 05 edges it for midrange detail IMO. Obviously even more noticeable when adding a subwoofer. I used Mogami 2549 and Oyaide 102 SSC based XLR cables and found them both to be great options which won't break the bank.

    @tremot7143

    @@marvinhagen Your individual use case dictates wether you should buy the 05 or 07, not the use with a subwoofer. You're adding complexity to your system and it can do more harm than good to the sound quality. In my experience the 07 doesn't benefit from a subwoofer that much, maybe at extreme levels but I haven't tested this. It goes plenty low (38Hz) with great speed and impact, so you will have a hard time taming the bass in your room even without one. The 07 is more versatile than the 05 because it has double the amplification power. It's a much bigger speaker and sounds like it too. Ideal as a nearfield monitor, but it can just as easily fill a decent size room if you should set it up as a traditional HiFi speaker. I would only suggest buying the 05 as a nearfield monitor and/or if you have a small room for listening at moderate levels. It delivers impressive bass for its size and does really benefit from a good subwoofer to fill out the low end, but I can tell you it takes a while getting it to sound just right.

    Hi guys. I am looking for some new studio monitors for mixing/mastering for trance music. I've tried the HEDD Type 07 MK2's and Adam Audio A7X's in store, unfortunately I could not compare them at the same time, since I've tested each monitor in a different store (and not in the ideal setting). I really liked the A7X's, but they might lack a little bit in the low frequency range. Also, they came out over 10 years ago and I am not sure if they will hold up for another decade. I am really looking for a long time investment here. From what I've heard, the HEDD Type 07 MK2 do perform better in the low frequency range, but the A7X's might translate better? What do you think is a better studio monitor? I've also heard that the new Focal Alpha Evo (65) line is a great alternative as well (and they are much cheaper). But I haven't got the opportunity yet to test them out in store. What would be the better purchase here? Please enlighten me :)

    Hi Omar, I tried both Type 07 MK2 and A7X in the same store and setting and as you said the HEDDs are hands down better in the low frequency range which left a very favorable first impression, especially with bass heavy electronic music. After an hour or two comparing on the widest range of genres I had on me (breakcore, tekno, hip hop, synth wave, jazz, classical) I ultimately opted for the A7Xs though because of fullness, clarity and precision on the mid and high frequencies which as it turned out I find more important (and you cannot upgrade with a sub). I later added an Adam Sub 12 to the setup and am really very happy with it - although I will be testing a pair of PSI A14-Ms later this afternoon ;)

    Thanks for doing this comparison. I have Neumann KH120's here and they are great monitors. The frequency response is very flat and I find them to be very accurate monitors. I did notice that the volume was turned down and these were quieter than the Hedd and PSI? I liked the PSI but missed the low frequency extension of the KH120's Also, I really enjoyed listening to the Hedd Type 07 but these perhaps sounded a little hyped? The stereo imaging sounded very good though from this test.

    Not about any of these speakers in particular, but what I think makes a good monitoring speaker is when the manufacturer doesn't try to get more extension out of the speakers than they have to give. I've heard some supposed studio monitors where they've used crossovers or DSP to try to EQ more bass extension out of their woofers and it inevitably results in compromised performance both for the bass extension as well as the mids. Yamaha's HS8 are the only one of these speakers that I've heard in person and they don't try for this. They roll off around 40Hz, which is where the speaker's resonant frequency is, and they don't try to use DSP or cabinet trickery to push any lower. Their response: Need bass? Buy a subwoofer. I respect that kind of mentality, particularly when you're dealing with 2-way speakers. You start making compromises with the driver that does bass and mids and you've ruined a speaker. You can afford to do so a bit more on 3-way systems because the mids will still be clean even if you're trying for a deeper bass dive on the woofer, but 3-way bookshelf speakers are significantly less common, which I feel is quite a shame.

    You were talking about Grimm Audio LS1 at the end of this video, but after recently seeing (in your 2,5k amp review) the HEDD Tower Mains in the studio of Yung, I could't help but wonder how those towers (with only the bottom subs) would perform in a home setup (dedicated listening room) and how that would compare to systems like Grimm Audio and Kii Three (with sub modules), especially in terms of soundstage, dynamics and scale. It seems the HEDDs are more focussed on natural sound reproduction than other mastering monitors and without losing detail or becoming to detailed. Maybe Yung can do a more detailed review or demonstration of that system or comment on it an upcoming Q&A session, as he told it was the first in NL and he would be in a good position to compare it to more consumer focussed audio :)! In a video on youtube of Mr Heinz he explains how they aim to get a flat curve both in frequency response (20hz-50khz) as well as dynamics response on every frequency.

    I always wondered if the type of monitors matters that much when you put a correction curve on your output. Like f.e. i run sonarworks sound id on my Yamaha HS8 and they sound 'clean' / neutral and flat in my room (mostly treated but improveable). Like how much difference is noticeable when i get let's say the Adam A7X and measure the speakers according to my room with sonarworks sound ID and get a flat response again. In both cases both monitors sound clean and flat in my room and therefore similar??? Maybe the same? So again my question is: do monitor types really matter when using them with response correction softwares? Does anybody know something i might miss here?

    Hello, very interesting comparison. Cause I own a Neumann KH 120A since 6 Years. KH 120 A for Home Audio? Well. But You have to choose the right Amp and a pair of good XLR-Cables. I use as PreAmp a McIntosh MHA 150, after I had a PassLabs Pre and a Nagra Melody before. The Pass was very good too, but a little bit too precise, too cool. The McInt brings more Coloration, a bit of warmness And now its perfect. You should use for the Neumanns and the Pre very good Powercables for best audioresults. I use Shunnyatas, Kondos and Tellurium. Not cheap, but with better sound than with standard Cables.

    Great test, and thank you for the discussion. I own a pair of Neumann KH120A's for home music listening. I cross them over digitally at 120 Hz to a stereo pair of subwoofers with a minidsp. The minidsp also applies room correction at the bass frequencies. This yields a pretty much neutral response between 20 Hz to 20 kHz. Although I enjoy this setup and I don't find the Neumann's fatiguing for long listening sessions, I agree with your assessment; these speakers are not for everyone. Even though the measured performance suggests completely uncolored response, in reality I find them slightly forward sounding. They can be ever so slightly attacking or 'in your face'. Depending on the recording, instead of making you want to enjoy the music, they make you want to change the tonal balance. This makes them a great mixing tool, and should not come as a surprise I suppose. At the same time, it is good to note they are designed to provide objective reference performance, and not to actively reveal issues in the recording. The measured response is ruler flat, thus not adding or subtracting anything. I would rather argue that musical/colored speakers are designed to actively hide flaws instead. The flip side is that the Neumann's offer amazing clarity and detail into the recording. Good recordings have a sense of realism that I have not heard elsewhere. Crap goes in, crap goes out; that's pretty much the deal here, and shouldn't a high end audio setup be able to reveal issues? The bottom line is that it is absolutely no problem to listen music on these speakers, whereas some studio monitors deliberately sound bad, but the Neumann's will not juice up the recording or make it more engaging. Personally, I am happy like this; I would not want to spend more money on objectively worse engineering. The measured response is top-notch including off-axis, their aluminium enclosure is build like a tank and mitigates any vibrations, and they play incredibly loud. I take the good with the bad. If you desire something that makes you forget about the equipment, and lets you focus more on the music, some slight additional warmth/colorization is highly desired instead. I would not recommend these speakers to everybody without reservations, but they can challenge consumer speakers for music listening depending on your personal tastes. Thanks again!
