Yes, but seeds aren't true to the mother plant.

Dahlia grown from seeds do in fact produce tubers and they are what are used to create/find new varieties. Some seed that’s been bred for several seasons do in fact produce true to style.

Seeds grow several different variations and colors, it's true, but the plants do produce tubers... So if you grow from seed and you get one flower you really love, you can save the tubers from that plant and even name it, and it will be true to the flower/plant you saved it from. That's how new varieties are made. I grow from saved tubers and from seed, and love them all! But I'm not a flower farm, so it's just for my enjoyment 😊 Can't wait to see all your dahlias in bloom this summer!!

Jill I don’t know if you’re aware that many plants have patents, usually 20 yrs. If you propagate patented plants, especially to make money you can be fined ..heavily.

Seeds do produce tubers, from my understanding! It just will take longer.

We grew our entire first ever dahlias this year all from seed. The plants are large and very healthy and we have been excited by our results, better yet we are able to name each variety ourselves as every seed produces a plant that is new and unique in its own right. This year we developed so far 28 new varieties which are still blooming. Soon enough it will be time to dig and store them for the winter and then we will grow as per Jills video to increase our stocks for next season here in Australia. I have brought a number of packets of different varieties to do the exact same process of starting new seeds again this year but will also be making a large financial investment in named tubers from growers here in Australia to increase our range further for cut flower market and also for tuber sales hopefully beginning next year.

Be aware that some flowers plants are patented and it is illegal to propagate to sell them. Make sure to check first.

If you buy seeds the tubers will stay true to variety, if you save seed you’ll get a box of chocolate when you plant them next year. It’s like a choose your own adventure garden style.

The dahlias grown from seeds will produce tubers, might not be big enough to separate in that first year but definitely in the second. If you want bigger tubers in the first end-of-season, make sure to pinch 95% of the flower buds, the plant will redirect her energy into growing stronger tubers. The last flush of flowers, close to frost, those you can let develope to get an idea of the variety you got in the seed. Hope it helps.

Thanks for all of your practical, and abundant info Jill!! I have learned so, so much from you over the last year!! ❤ I bought one of Floret Originals dahlia seed packs, and have nearly 100% germination rate! So I’m super excited about them! I will have to keep this in mind for next year, because I do plan to keep their tubers! Very cool! 😁

Hi Jill. can I use powder rooting gel? I just ordered my dahlias from Floret and they will be arriving soon. Too funny that you are using them. My dear 82yr old friend and I have been following her for several years now. She has come a long way. I still want to go visit her farm. Blessing.

Great video! I plan to take cuttings from a dahlia that my mom has - it is gorgeous! Quick question can you take cuttings from the plant itself or does it have to be directly from the tuber? I just got my Floret Book - Discovering Dahlias - so I may try to take seeds now and then cuttings from it in the next season. Thank you for all of your wonderful videos!!
