Multiplayer Cheating, explained

Why do people cheat? How do the cheats work? These are questions you'll have an answer to by the end of the video.
Get 20% off a year's subscription of Brilliant with the following link:
brilliant.sjv.io/6bnBEK
The video goes through the most common types of cheats that people use, example uses and visual explanations in order to better help you understand how they work. It's important to state that for the sake of simplicity, a lot of assumptions were made and details were skipped so that non-technical viewers can understand the "core concepts" of these cheats.
I also want to note that some of the names in the video like "replacement/duplication attack" were chosen by me as they're somewhat relevant to what is being done. In reality, there are a lot of ways to call this type of "attack" such as MITM (Man in the middle), Proxy attacks etc etc
Video chapters:
0:00 - Introduction
0:15 - Why do people cheat?
1:00 - Profit cheaters
2:11 - Bots
4:18 - Mod menus
4:58 - Network hacks
7:30 - Sponsor segment

@BradynLee This would be true if everybody in the world was a gamer, this is of course impossible as some people dont even have access or even know about these technologies we have. People are always coming into the gaming community and these new people are going to hear some person across the world calling a person a "aimbotter" and this new person will have no idea what this person is talking about. This video is a very good way to teach these new people what a cheater in a video game is and how they work, giving them more knowledge and information on this topic they are learning about. lets be fair here at a certain time in your life you learned what an aimbotter was either through hearing it or being killed by one, and wanted to learn more about it. Its these videos which help people learn when other sources fail.

Thanks for the video. Didn't know there's a special terminology for type of bots. From the point of creator I consider bots more interesting and fun to make rather than cheats. When you watch your bots doing something on their own, there's always something mystical to it, as if you created something alive.

You also have the cheaters that cheat just to experiment and see if they can, same concept as people who do actual hacking on random systems as well. I consider myself one of them, I don't cheat to be harmful to anyone (which my cheating I usually do in singleplayer stuff), I normally cheat just to experiment and see if I can do anything fun that the game didn't originally intend for.

Fair point, although the amount of people that do this kind of thing is very very very small hence why I didn't give it a category, I'd arguably say it will eventually lead to profit cheating as you make em and sell em

@@KianBrose Tbh personally I never wish to sell cheats, the profit though comes from the fact that I’m planning on doing pentesting as a job, legally.. which would in fact bring in profit, but cheating in games is mostly just for fun or curiosity to see if I can do it.

  • @Simking

I don't know if I can classify myself as one of this kind, but sometimes I just love to mess around with stuff in the game without directly affecting the players if there are any, or even affecting them but without hurting em: mostly to make them laugh or something. Sometimes the game gets so boring over time (no new content or something) that I use or make exploits to make something fun out of already existing pieces, and if there any backdoors to import stuff. I never really enjoyed cheating the way in which other players get hurt or lose interest in the game, and never understood people who are continiously doing that. In my perception, cheating is like a form of art if performed correctly.

  • @stolendiamond09

    @stolendiamond09

    Жыл бұрын

@@Simking I remember playing a mobile game a long time ago in which the presence of cheaters had become part of the appeal of the game. Basically, because it had no form of anticheat so it was overwhelmed with hackers, no one really played the pvp as intended. Most of the time what would happen is that a hacker would join, fly out of the map into areas you can’t normally get to, and then use a specific power to pull people towards them so that most people were outside the map. Then people would just hang out and shoot at anyone who joins that isn’t up there lol That kind of cheater can be contrasted with the other kind, the people who join with guns that one-shot everyone, and start flying around spawn killing people until they win and then leave. And I think that illustrates what you said pretty well. Anyone who does the second type of cheating, even if they are just “experimenting,” is a despicable person, but the first one does little to no harm and makes more fun in an otherwise abandoned game.

I use to be one of those "profit cheaters" writing programs that people would use to cheat. I've stop along time ago but this video is great and accurate. It clears up the fact that cheats and basically computers and general aren't magic and have each side has complicated mechanisms. An extra tip however: Most good mod menus also use the network manipulation so mod menus and network hacking aren't completely separate.

  • @KianBrose

Yeah these can be mixed and matched, I personally used a mix of a bot, mod menu and network cheats for one bot to 1. network cheats: force all mobs within a map to spawn in the same area 2. mod menu: modify values like cooldowns on attacks, to make the player attack hella fast 3. bot: attack everything near where they were teleported to To make a hyper efficient farm

Even as far back as Diablo II, people had working methods to duplicate items by fabricating client messages. Eventually, Blizzard detected these and swiftly banned offenders. It is such a common thing that I can only hope not many video games suffer from a lack of verification. It is more likely in smaller projects lead by less experienced programmers though.

Half right on the reason: yes, there is a certain level of ego to be solved, but on the other hand, it's literally just fun to get an advantage. Playing the game in a way very few are, with little restrictions, and complete control over whether or not you win or lose. Yes, there are some cheats that are so god-like that it makes it unfun - there is not even a hint of a challenge, but there is also some levels of cheating that still require skill and "try" to maintain. Also, as a developer, I find reverse engineering games very interesting and different from my normal job as a software developer. Developing hacks is something I truly enjoy, both as a learning + development process, as well as plain entertainment.

Good point, but essentially the game receives information from the server about where opponents are, then a mod menu reads that information and displays it as boxes on the screen & lets you lock to them, I thought it would be too complex of an example to show

To keep it 100 with you I’ve been cheating pretty much for four years now and over 40 games to 30 games and I do it to test the game because a lot of games do promote their game being the best game know cheaters great anti-cheat, and I prove that wrong every day when I cheat in a game a lot of games that act as if they’re a good game or their devs actually put a lot of work into the game or super wrong. They are just money profiting because I can prove that their games aren’t on Hackable. I can use the shittiest menu to the best menu and still not get banned and when I do all I have to do is make a new account which takes literally a minute.

I've always wondered: if someone sets up a camera to watch their monitor and an XY motorized chassis to control their mouse, and uses pistons to operate their keyboard and they run their robot on a different computer which isn't connected to the internet, could they be distinguished from a human player? Would we have a Wattson moment between KennyS and a robot that mechanically plays CS:GO driven by a visual bot?

  • @KianBrose

Yes, depends on how the server is made In the end, the server doesn't know what you are running on your computer, it's the antiviruses job to tell it that you are cheating A chassi solution would just not trigger it since it's well... external

@@KianBrose I imagine that it might even be possible to make a consumer version of this sort of thing using a microprocessor, some pistons for the keyboard, a chassis for the mouse with pistons for the buttons and a special HDMI/DisplayPort cable that branches the monitor's input into 2 identical outputs so that you don't have to have a fancy camera. I'm honestly more suprised that there aren't kits like this on Amazon at this point.

I know its a stupid story but the first cheat/mod menu i ever used was in gta online. My first account (original legit) got banned because one day some modder gave me money drop. I immediately left the session thinking nothing would happen. Next day i see that i got banned. I tried to appeal and obviously Rockstar games wouldn't listen. So i used mod in second account just to take out my frustration (just added money didn't harm any other players). And the best (or worst) my second account never got banned. Edit: Nice video tho with visual effects. I am looking forward to become either a software or game developer, so its kool to learn something new from you.

This video is incredibly well-made and easy to understand from the perspective of a legit unlike others I've seen that either stray off-topic into personal opinions about cheaters instead of the main topic or are too complicated to understand for people who haven't cheated. Personally, I cheat for 3 reasons. 1. In most games, it allows you to play the game in an entirely different way, such as HvH (hack versus hack), or make tactics that would normally be either unviable or impossible more accessible. 2. Not to make regular people mad, but to make people who dox/harass people or think cheating should be punishable by real life punishment over pixels on a screen (although people who use cheats to crash a games economy such as TF2 or CSGO should get punished with fines since it affects people who make money from trading or running services to aid in trading). 3. Cheating has gotten me into coding and TASing (Which is essentially just using cheats like slo-mo, input recording, and save states among other things to make a speedrun as fast as theoretically possible, not meant to compete with legit runs.)

Psst, I used to cheat quite a bit Let me inform you of another reason that others may cheat Ego and profit are the most likely run-ins tho, so keep that in mind. There are simps, which is self explanatory. There are people who are obsessed with justice. (Trying to make what they’re doing seem right with a “Logical” motive) And my personal favorite, to discover. This isn’t bad, nor is it good. It isn’t harmful, as it is just weird to others watching. This was the route I went with, and let me tell you now, it wasn’t bad. Seeing all the code, seeing parts of the map cut off, seeing what’s under the map. It’s really cool! I’m disappointed that people use such a thing as an unfair advantage tho, it’s just rude and disrespectful to the time creators put into their game Alr, thanks for reading, have a lovely day!
