Multi layer graffiti stencil using Cricut Tutorial

In this video you can learn how to create some multi layered stencils using your cricut Explore air 2 to create some awesome graffiti style artwork. Using the website stencilcreater.org as an easy accessible way to create our layers we then use the svg files to cut on the cricut. It’s an awesome website to play with and upload some family pics to create some unique art. To get that really cool graffiti effect spray paint is then used but less toxic options like paint rollers or brushes are a great alternative if you’d like to use this as a project for the kids.

    Well I bought my cricut explore air 2 a couple of years ago and its still going strong. I use it for cutting stencils mostly from 220gsm paper or thin mylar sheets. The only limitation is the cutting size if you want to make really large stencils and the software can be a bit annoying as they like to release updates quite often which it seems you can't avoid. Yes I use the standard blade to cut everything including cardstock up to 250 gsm. As long as you choose the right settings it works really well. I am the same and try not to buy too much for this machine when it is not necessary. Thank you for watching the video, I am working on a new one to come out soon.

    Many thanks for uploading this !! I am a fellow stencil artist and was really searching for confirmation that multilayer stencils are possible with a cricut. May I ask you what's the model of the cricut machine you're using in the video, and what type of cutting mat? (do you use different cutting mats for each layer?) Thanks for your help!

    Glad you enjoyed the video!! The Cricut is great for making stencils and gets great details. I am using a cricut explore air 2 which I got second hand but unused for a great deal but its certainly paid for itself with all the work I've done on it. I mainly use the cutting matt that come with the machine but also have some cheap ones from aliexpress which work great too. The trick is trying to keep them clean so they last longer. I've had the thing for about 1 year now, made about a hundred cuts and still have the original blade in the machine.

    Thanks mate! Glad you liked the video. Thats a really good question and there is no number of perfect layers. If your a beginner then I would recommend starting with two or three to get your head around it and then increase detail as well as layers as your confidence grows. More layers doesn't always equal better artwork though so just have fun and make something your proud of.

  • @WickedPaint

    @WickedPaint

    3 жыл бұрын

    Hi Barbara, thank you so much for watching and following this tutorial. It shouldn't distort as the files download as png or svg which work great in the Cricut software. One thing that helps to keep all the stencils the same size is taking it into a software like Gimp and adding a plus symbol in each corner so you can align each layer but also use the plus to cut each stencil the same size in the cricut software. If this didn't quite make sense then just send an email to wickedpaintairbrush@gmail.com and I will send you a step by step that will help you through that process.

    How would this work if you wanted to do a silhouette of the image first, and then add the layers on top of it to make the colors pop. I was playing with the site last night and it only separated the colors and not the entire image for a silhouette cutout.

  • @WickedPaint

    @WickedPaint

    3 жыл бұрын

    Thats a good point and this method does have a few limitations as you've just pointed out. That website won't give you the option to create a silhouette. This month I'm working on creating 12 layer full colour stencil artwork in Inkscape which gives you alot more options for adjustment and control. This video will be out in a week from now and what I do in the video is start with the darkest colours and work my way to the brightest in order to get them to pop.
