Yarrbat Avenue in Balwyn, a typical street in Melbourne’s inner eastern suburbs, showcases a range of housing styles from the last century, lined with European deciduous trees marking the seasonal changes. The client’s brief sought to maximize the site’s potential, emphasizing the location’s advantages, particularly the excellent views of the Dandenong Ranges from its hillside position, and the engagement with the street’s mature trees.
The home needed to function as a multi-generational residence, accommodating both the family and their grandparents with independent and shared spaces. Ensuring everyone’s sense of personal space was crucial, along with providing equal access throughout the home and planning for future needs like a lift.
The house’s design is distinctly private, with narrow or screened windows to the street that connect just enough with the surrounding greenery. The upper floor is clad in Spotted Gum, a durable Australian hardwood, while the ground floor features local bluestone panels. This combination of materials is reflected in the home’s joinery elements, creating a cohesive aesthetic.
Despite its privacy, the interiors are bright, thanks to strategically placed windows and large skylights. The use of natural timbers and stone complements the changing landscape, forging a strong connection between the interior and exterior. A neutral color scheme allows the seasonal views to serve as evolving artwork within the home.
The landscape theme extends indoors with a central green stone column that spans the home’s three floors, encircled by a floating staircase, providing an intimate interaction with the material. The stone-clad basement anchors the home and includes an all-white garage with a wash station, reflecting the client’s passion for cars and showcasing their collection.
The meticulous detailing of the material finishes ensures a seamless transition between different surfaces, from stone to timber to glass. This home stands out from its neighbors with its subtle yet heroic design gestures and extended family accommodation, establishing a modern reference point in the history of this established street in Balwyn.
