Background: Muhammed Ali, the former World Heavyweight Boxing Champion, outclassed Dutch title-holder Rudi Lubbers in a 12-round points victory in Djakarta on Saturday night (October 20).
Afterwards, Ali said he regarded the bout as training for his match with Joe Erazier in January.
Lubbers displayed great courage, but it was obvious almost from the start that he faced a hopeless task. And from halfway through the bout, each round looked as if it might be his last.
Surviving a ceaseless rain of punches, the Dutch boxer stayed on his feet to the end, maintaining his record of never having been floored. But most commentators felt that Ali held back. At the end, Lubbers was bleeding from a gash on his forehead and nose and both his eyes were puffed.
It was to one-sided contest as Ali, dancing around the ring, forced the pace, trapping Lubbers in corners and attacking him with lightning flurries.
Commentators said Lubbers landed probably three hard punches during the 12 rounds.
Judge Lim Kee Chan of Singapore scored the fight 60-45, Chris Scinneder of West Germany 60-40 and Leon Johnanes of Indonesia 59-52.
Ali, at 31, three years older than Lubbers, said he tried to knock out the Dutchman a couple of times, but when he realised Lubbers was not going to fall, he settled for a points win.
Lubbers said he was disappointed and felt he could have boxed better.
25,000 spectators turned up to see the fight in Djakarta's Senayan Stadium, which can hold 120,000. Only 30 per cent of the tickets were sold -- disappointing considering that Ali is regarded as the world's top Muslim sportsman -- but the promoters earned a big revenue from television rights.
SYNOPSIS: Former World Heavyweight Champion Muhammad Ali had Dutch titleholder Rudi Lubbers on the run right from the start of their twelve-round bout in Djakarta on Saturday night.
Lubbers displayed great courage, but it was obvious almost from the beginning that he faced a hopeless talk. From Ali's gloves came an almost ceaseless rain of punches....
From half way through the match, each round looked like it might be the last for Lubbers. But most commentators felt that Ali was holding back.
It was a one-sided contest as Ali, dancing around the ring, forced the pace -- trapping Lubbers in corners and attacking him with lightning flurries.
But at the seventh round, the Dutchman was still on his feet, maintaining his record of never having been floored.
Both fighters felt the sapping heat from the powerful lights in the outdoor ring. Only 25,000 Indonesians turned up for the bout in a stadium capable of holding 120,000. Seventy-per cent of the tickets went unsold, disappointing considering Ali is regarded as the world's top Muslim sportsman.
By the tenth round the outcome was obvious, with Ali constantly pinning Lubbers into the corners. The Dutchman's coach and sparring partner lent their support in vain...
The judges gave the match to Ali on overwhelming points, and the 31-year-old ex-champion picked up 200,000 dollars for a fight he described as training for his bout with Joe Frazier in January
