A date and some water is my preferred suhoor. Why? It's the sunnah and I'm happy with doing the sunnah. And it honestly sustains me well. For me just having water is great for fasting but I like to have a date because it's the sunnah.

Red fatty meat, some butter, eggs and maybe some raw milk cheese should be eaten. It is way more satiating and gives you everything you need nutritionally. Any snacks, fruit, sugar, etc should be minimized or in small quantity if you choose. Carbs make you much more irritable and increase hunger signals even when you aren't because of the spike in insulin.

A good friend has told me that my genetics clearly do not work with the "Modern Western Diet" so she is trying to help me learn a new way to eat. My physical therapist is teaching me about metabolic disorder and all of the things you say here about spiking blood sugar by the way we eat. It's SO MUCH to try and learn and I am very eager to regain my health and fitness. But I have a ways to go yet.

Misinformation. Ketosis is not a healthy state to put your body in. It is similar to ketoacidosis, producing acidic ketones that acidify the blood (hence the acidosis in ketoacidosis). Ketosis is basically starvation mode for your body. You will burn fat rapidly but that does not mean it is a healthy thing to do in the long term. Healthy body fat has a wide array of important functions in the human body. Also known as adipose tissue, body fat helps regulate hormone and glucose levels among other important functions. Fat also plays important roles in your muscles as well. That is probably why people on a ketogenic diet start to suffer from muscle cramps as the level of fat in their body decreases. This is not healthy and can lead to many health problems in the long term.

BaarakAllaahu feek. You're completely right and have given great advice regarding focusing more on satiety and hydration. I think it is worth mentioning that Mufti Menk's audience are mostly from the Asian Sub-continent and Middle East, so with that it's the abundance of fried foods and he's trying to discourage mainly, even if cereal and instant oats isn't the best for our insulin / glucose, it's probably a lot better than 8 samosas, biriyani, Indian sweets, khalwa and bakhlava with 30g of sugar per "piece" and tea with 3 table spoons of sugar etc.

I guess it's just down to opinion. I like to remain on a healthy nutrition plan throughout the year but during Ramadan I don't mind having less as it does something refreshing for me after Ramadan is over. I feel extremely grateful and my eman is higher and more humbled when it's over, especially on the day of Eid where it's sunnah to eat and drink and have sweet things and visit people's homes and eat. It feels extremely well earned.

I would disagree. You body needs both simple and complex carbohydrates to function properly any restrictive diet is going to lead to health problems in the long run. There is nothing wrong with plant based oils either (although olive oil and vegetable oil are probably the healthier options). Animal based fats were also used in industry as well, as an industrial grease for example.

No there are not, you cannot use them to replace simple and complex carbohydrates in your diet. Complex carbs like rice or bread play a crucial role in your body. After digestion, you body converts these carbs into body fat, also known as adipose tissue that helps regulate blood glucose and hormone levels, thermogenesis, metabolic functions and more. Eliminating any food group from your diet is a BAD IDEA. This video is misinformation and dangerous. Both of the so called Muslims in this video are wrong in my opinion.

This is not good advice. Complex carbohydrates are ESSENTIAL to maintain healthy functioning of the human body including regulating blood glucose and hormone levels amongst many other functions. Eliminating any food group from your diet is a bad idea. Do not listen to either of the men in this video.

@@ibnyasin Yes it's a shame that many people today are incredibly misinformed when it comes to diet. Carbohydrates, vegetables, dietary fiber, plant based oils, there is nothing wrong with any of these things. Bobby says that plant oils were meant for only mechanical uses, well even animal fats where used as industrial greases and biodiesels. That is a moot point to try and demonize plant oils. Carbohydrates, vegetables and dietary fiber are all crucial for good health as well. there are many beneficial physiological functions to these food groups. Complex carbs are a source of slow release long term energy, They help maintain healthy muscle functioning. Indirectly, the help maintain glucose blood levels and hormone levels, both crucial to your health. Vegetables have a number of nutrients that you cannot get in a high density in animal foods. Just as you would not expect to find large amounts of protein in vegetables, it would be silly to think you can get the same density of certain vitamins and minerals in animal products. Dietary fiber helps slow down the movement of digestive materials, giving your body more time to absorb more nutrients from the food you eat. It also helps prevent watery stool or diarrhea. On top of all this, if you are already fasting, I see no point at all in restricting yourself further when you break the fast. Both the men in this video are giving terrible advice.

The ideal food to eat in syhoor is fruit because fruit is easily digested by your stomach and doesn't require and water . However meats require a lengthy digestion process from 12 to 24 hours and also require a constant supply of water which will make you feel thirsty throughput the day.
