My main curiosity is that Barry Jenkins (Moonlight, If Beale Street could talk and Underground Railroad) is directing. I don't know if hes just selling out or hes wanting to expand his name. Arthouse directors doing 180s and immediately making a gigantic blockbuster without the steps in between does not turn out well for them.

I'm holding to the smallest amount of optimism imaginable about this film for 2 reasons. 1: it's more of an original idea. 2: We didn't learn much about who,Mufasa or Scar were in the original (94) Lion King. So, even though i feel like i already know what the story is gonna be. I think maybe there's about a 1% chance it'll be interesting.

Well, the first movie made over a billion dollars, so there was no chance in hell that they weren't going to make a follow up. I'd hate to say it, but we vote for what we want to see based on what we buy tickets to go see. If people don't want to see any more of these movies, there's one way to make that happen. And that's for us to stop showing up at them and start making them flop hard. But let's face it, nobody will actually do that.

Live action remakes really don’t understand what makes the cartoons great, and thats because they are cartoons and you get the more emotion and facial animations, plus the cartoons had a lot more heart, the live action remakes of the lion King, just makes me want to go watch a David Attenborough nature documentary, because why would i watch photo realistic cgi animals, when i can just watch the real thing, and i know its the Lion King IP, but in that case, just watch the original cartoon version that still holds up to this day.

The cool thing of the “live-action” Lion King was how it gave me an opportunity to see it in theaters with my dad. He loved the original and saw it with my brother in 1994. This film is just not necessary if I’m honest and I haven’t really gone back to see the 2019 film.

This was a fantastic film to work on more so because of the team I worked alongside as a story artist. Fun fact apparently I was the only artist on this production to have worked on the original Lion King and this production. Outside of the production itself. I do love the prequel story of Mufasa. It was an honor to work for Berry Jenkins who is a brilliant live action director. This is his directorial debut on an animated production. I’m a traditionalist so honestly I am not a big fan of the ultra realism but as a story artist, it was an absolute treat to be on the team developing this story from script.

I am the tiniest bit optimistic about this film for the sole reason that it's not going to be a beat-for-beat, almost line-for-line clone of something far superior that came before it like the 2019 film was -- it is actually something that hasn't really been explored before in any of the other Lion King films. The 1994 animated film is my favourite film of all time, so nothing that this film does is going to top that for me of course, but I'm cautiously optimistic and the tiniest bit excited at the idea of a feature-length Lion King that isn't a total rehash.

The director of Moonlight, the Hamilton guy doing music, and room to do something more creative with the story than the fidelity of the original. At least this could be a more memorable and unique movie than the first. I'll give this a chance; this will not ruin my childhood.

BTW, the ones complaining about this movie (though there’s nothing about it to complain) are more than likely the same ones that’s been asking about a movie about Mufasa & Scar’s origin. The fact that Disney did it, though it’s live action/CGI is good enough for me. Edit: The people who are giving this movie unwarranted hate are a bunch of hypocrites

Or, even they themselves are unconfident their movie will sell well alongside more competition they’d rather release it in a time they think there won’t be any, which isn’t any true either given Sonic 3, Lord of The Rings, and a handful more interesting films will be out by then…

If you watch the trailers for the first and second movie, you’ll notice there’s a lot more emotion to the characters in this trailer. Also, it’s not impossible to have live action animals that don’t potently display emotion. Take the jungle book, for example. Personally my favorite Disney live-action remake because it captures (most) of the charm of the original, where you don’t lose attachment to the characters. Cautiously optimistic, could be a new step forward for Disney.

I would go back and rewatch the 2019 live action remake, or at least clips from it. And the teaser trailer, the animals clearly have a lot more facial expressions than they did in the 2019 live action remake in the animation is also clearly more vibrant and colorful. I liked the 2019 live action remake. I certainly cried at it, especially when Mufasa died, since it was more realistic. I thought it was visceral and intense. Maybe the animals didn't show as many facial expressions as they did in the original animated versionbut I certainly thought it was a worthy live action remake even if it wasn't as good as the original animated version. But my point is, the animals in the teaser trailer have a lot more facial expressions than they did in the 2019 live action remake.

I don't necessarily agree with the "as soon as its photorealistic, it loses its emotion" because its simply not true. Its all about the execution. Exhibit A - Favreau's first Disney remake, the Jungle Book, the animals were incredibly expressive in that film. Exhibit B - The concept art for the Lion King remake had the designs in live action, but still able to emote quite well. Favreau made the creative choice to change it because he wanted a nature documentary feel. Exhibit C - This trailer is already showing more emotion in its shots, particularly of the cub Mufasa.

I'm a defender of the LA Lion King, as in I enjoyed it, and I would rewatch it, never over the original. But I had fun with it as flawed as some of the casting, CGI choices regarding emoting animals, and translation of things like Be Prepared and I Just Can't Wait to Be King were. With that in mind, I was very much in the Huh? Camp for Mufasa. Financial success for one movie based on one of the most successful trailers of all time, but which was not well received on paper spells disaster for a sequel, as you can't trap the audience with the same gimmicks without conjuring up images of the problem ...but damn it am I actually interested in Mufasa based on the teaser??? Lin Manuel original music, stunning visuals, (hoping for a score that is less of a rehash this time around), underdog rags to riches story, with that Iconic theme!. Not sure how they fix the uncannny valley issue unless they do the Homeward Bound route (weird but could work) and I don't know how I feel about the shots in the trailer which seem like either a rehash of the final conflict in the original (hopefully not) or a recap (seems unnecessary), but given Beyonce's in it again (Why???) its safe to assume there's some time jumps or a narrative frame of maybe Simba telling Kiara her Grandfather's story? Not hopeful, but it has increased my anticipation slightly, while not being optimistic at all

@@SeanChandlerTalksAbout We're getting a lot more emotion. You don't need to go back and watch the entire movie, but at least go back and rewatch clips from the 2019 live action remake. And the difference is night and day. I am one of the people that did like the two 2019 live action remake because I thought technically it was a groundbreaking film. I thought it was more of visceral and intense. Yes, there were less expressions on the animal spaces, but that just comes from it being photorealistic. And while people complain about it being photorealistic, that was exactly the point. They successfully achieved what they set out to do, whether we agree with the goal or like the end result. I don't know. Maybe I just like to be fair and balanced when it comes to movies. While it was never as good as the original animated movie, I think it was worth the effort. With that being said, I know a lot of people didn't like the fact that there wasn't a lot of facial expressions on these animals, and that the animation wasn't very vibrant. It's very clear that Disney and director Barry Jenkins took those criticisms to heart and seemed to fix what didn't work for audiences in the 2019 live action remake. I just don't know that it's going to be enough to get people to go see this movie in the theater. because it's going to be up against Sonic the Hedgehog 3 and Wicked Part One. Well, I don't think this movie will flop per se. I don't think it'll hit anywhere near a billion dollars like the first movie, especially considering a lot of people did not like the first movie and therefore we'll skip this movie out of principle regardless of how good this movie may turn out to be. And there's just simply more height for Sonic the Hedgehog 3 and Wicked Part One. This movie is going to have stiff competition and I just don't see it making a huge profit. I think it will probably just break even if I had to guess which is a shame because Disney's had a bad year in 2023. But I could be wrong. It may be the breakthrough hit that nobody saw coming, but I doubt it.

I think that they could have adopted a bit more of the Sonic the Hedgehog style with the animation. The texture and basic proportions are realistic but the faces are more cartoony. Now, maybe not for this movie because it would have caused inconsistency in animation. But they could always not make this movie and use that style for something else

Again, the photorealism animals in the remake use their body languages, eyes, and mannerisms to communicate emotions just like what real animals do. Just because it's not so much in the faces like the 94 film, doesn't mean it isn't there. Just like the Jungle Book remake, it's not a cartoon. It's photorealism. So of course the energy, expressions, colors is gonna be muted down compared the OG animated movies. The remake is still a decent movie, we all agree it's never gonna match up to the energy of the 94 film. It doesn't mean it's a bad movie. It's means it should approached from a different perspective. In the end of day Favreau knew exactly what he was doing, it's just that too many of us had the wrong/unrealistic ideas of what we were expecting out the remake that's why it got the responses that it. Many people set themselves up for disappointment. Out everything we saw in the trailers and the Jungle Book remake what were we really expecting out of photorealism??? It did what it was supposed to do. None the less, I'm looking forward to this movie.
