Mudlarking Mysterious Metals On The Thames Estuary! Can You Help Us Identify Them?

This week we return to metal beach. We find diving ladies and some mysterious items which we need your help with. Can you help us identify them? Are they actually anything at all? Come scraping and crawling around on a foreshore with us and see what we find! :)
We have a patreon page for anyone wishing to support us.
We also have a Ko-fi account, so if you wanted to support us by buying us a metaphorical cup of coffee it would be greatly appreciated xx

I wonder how it came to be in the sea- one could speculate it was a wrecked boat or ship, perhaps lost during the war? Anyway I wouldn’t think a transmitter would simply be thrown overboard when it became obsolete 😄

HF could mean "High Frequency" possibly from a radio or something... Perhaps you could try attaching one of the paste gems you two have found onto the clip on earring? Would be great to re-set little glass gems into the earring and the swimmer brooch as a project. That use of the pocket watch chain is genius! More great finds ladies! p.s.- I have to tell you, I was out on the village harbor on my birthday- yesterday (60! egads) and could NOT believe my eyes when I spotted a freaking Frozen Charlotte!!! Especially since it was no bigger than the head of a regular toothbrush! I constantly shake my head at the crazy small things we're able to spot amid such expanses of mud- or in this case the sandy wash-up higher on the shore. Anyway, it was a wonderful b-day gift from the Frozen Charlotte gods.

Your finds are cartridge cases - these contained a percussion cap (in the centre, with a dimple caused by the firing pin) and the explosive propellant, usually cordite. The actual bullet was the pointy bit which was a press-fit in the open end of the cartridge case - the exploding cordite pushed the bullet up the barrel of the gun at tremendous speed, and the spent cartridge case was then ejected from the breech. A complete unit of cartridge case and contents, with the bullet, is called a round - complete rounds seem to come out of the Thames quite frequently, judging by the mudlarking videos I have seen. Complete rounds should be treated with respect as they are still live, although probably won't fire if they've been underwater for any length of time. Hope this is helpful.

Good Day, Ladies. I am surprised at the amount of goodies Metal Beach continues to gift you with. Loved the swimming gal the most. I was thinking she may have been an aerialist/trapeze artist at a circus (very popular in the era of the 1920s), as she looked like she was holding on to something? Fleur, The small glass rod you left behind may have worked well to build a hanging lamp for the doll's house? Looking Forward to seeing you two Lady Larkers, as well as Sunny on the next video. I had to laugh over your debate over the hand with the lantern and the foot with the sandal. I can see both of your arguments, and I can also see them as chance shapes. Hopefully you'll find pictures online that prove you both right. I love the jewelry pieces with the star crinoids. And hello Sunny cat.

You had lots of nice finds along the Thames. You could say that with the 1 franc coin, you found gold, well gold colour haha. Love the diving lady brooch. I would say If it's from a shotgun, it's a cartridge and from a bullet, it's a casing. Have a great week away Kate, and see you on your return. Thank you

Modulator HF likely stands for High Frequency. A modulator could be part of a radio. Early Radios were HF only, then VHF (Very High Frequency) was developed, the UHF (Ultra High Frequency), then Microwave Frequencies. Early radios would be HF, as would be military radios, ship radios, aircraft radio, amateur radio, etc.

It's a hand holding a clay pipe! And it's a bird clinging to a branch! (100% guesswork, haha!). Gosh that Diving Belle is a magnificent find!

I must add that I think Kate's necklaces are absolutely lovely, the more so because they are 100% guaranteed unique! I agree that the weathering actually makes them more perfect.

What you have found is called a casing. It is where the gunpowder is held, with a bullet crimped into the open end. The casing is usually made of brass, though sometimes steel. A good way to remember what it is called is that it “encases” the powder (referred to as a propellant), making it a casing. The end, where the writing often is when you find them, is where the firing pin of a gun or rifle (there’s a difference, but that’s a lesson for another day!) will strike to cause a spark to detonate inside the casing to ignite the powder, and is call a primer. The powder explodes, and causes the bullet to become dislodged and the velocity of the explosion makes the bullet fly down the path of least resistance, which happens to be the barrel of the firearm. The bullet itself is made of lead, and being a relatively soft metal will “spread” when it hits an object. Once a bullet is shot, the casing is referred to as a “spent casing”. The letters and numbers on the casing are usually a maker’s mark (Smith and Wesson or Remington for example), and the caliber of the round (in essence, the measurement of the bullet). Some manufacturers now put the grains on it as well, which is the measure of gunpowder in the casing… the more powder, the faster the velocity of the bullet and further it will travel, with less arc as gravity causes it to fall toward the ground as it travels. I wish I could draw a picture for you with the parts of the round, but here’s a bulleted (pun intended) list: entire unit: Round Part that holds powder: Casing. After being shot: spent casing Part that flies (projectile): Bullet Hope this helps! Keep the videos coming! They are a huge highlight of the week for me, and so many of us! Best wishes to you all!! Colleen

The key hole cover looks like an old gum ball machine. Could easily be made into a gum ball pendant
