Mud lake Culver City California 1950's by Gayle Ramey
Water skiing at Mud Lake. This is in the same area where the Marina is today. Taken maybe around 1957, the first skier to come to shore is my brother, Dean, and the close up shot is of Mike Sanders. Dick Ireland's family has one of the boats. The white and green boat was ours and the guy sitting in the chair while skiing was always there. We had lots of fun at Mud lake but I bet it was very contaminated being surrounded by oil wells. Or maybe not? This was my first effort at editing home movies and I am aware that two spots repeat.

I remember this lake. Channel 5 used to show races here in the early fifties. I used to go swimming here, or wading as I was very young. Hoppyland and the stables were close by as was a small Midget ace car track. I could disappear in the wetlands behind there and not see another human all day. Thanks for this video.
Love Culver City. Thank you for posting this. George Vreeland Hill

Not Culver City.
Great video!!
I really enjoyed see this with Mike Sanders in it, he & I (Chuck Gardner) were good buddies at Culver City Schools in the 50's.
Glad you liked it. I wondered if I would ever get a post from someone that knew any of the people in the video. I haven't seen any of those guys since probably the 60's.
I remember the stables and the car races but the only roller coaster was at P.O.P. Pacific Ocean Park down at the pier. Thanks for the post.

Donna Wooley wow a new comment, nice.
I have memories of riding by on my bike heading for Venice Beach, way before the Pier. I remember people boating in big circles, and I think there was a high spot in the middle and it looked like people were sanding on the water.
Remember it well! Our dad had the pony ride comcession & a skating rink, very odd combination and the roller coaster was called the Little Dipper.
Hoppyland was right near here with the kiddie amusements. I learned to sail here at Mud Lake in a little dingy with a fold down mast - dad thought it would be a safe place to teach me. The beaches here were icky feeling - but then we lived on the beach so I was used to the sand and not the mud associated with water.
I remember my first attempt at water skiing was also there. Never got another chance, but it was a blast! Does anyone remember a small amusement park near there that had a roller coaster? I think it was called Hoppy Land.
I played baseball (Venice Little League) near mud lake when I was a kid in the '50s. Just southwest of the Lincoln Blvd/Washington Blvd intersection. Dirt/silt/sand field. At high tide the area behind center field would get a bit sticky.
Swam there. Went to Nightengale.Lived across Washington Blvd.
Amazing that we actually waterskied on this barely-more-than-a-pond back then - I guess we were desperate for a local ski spot!
Thanks for the comment. Glad you liked it. I used to go horse back riding every weekend. My family all water skied but my mom thought it was too crowded and I was to little, which I probably was. I forgot about the race car track.
Yes it was!
