About 50 years ago a group of friends and I went to Phil's Pancake and Steak House at the Glenmore Shopping Centre on McLeod Trail in Calgary on a Friday night. There was a shy young girl (a student at Mount Royal College) by the name of Joan Anderson who was the entertainer for the night. She mesmerized us all - a half century later and she still has that effect on me.

Joni is a free spirit who is somewhat scary, she has no barriers no set place that she calls home, not physically but in her music and her art, she represents an ideal of fearless honesty, she seeks the real truth of what an individual is, this takes real courage, that’s my impression, a real warrior, an iron fist in a velvet glove. The iron fist for hypocrisy, the velvet glove for who and what she loves.

Wow, The best ever. What a show. I remember going into tower records on Kensington High Street the day Turbulent Indigo when I was at college. It was the first album she had released since I had gotten into her. I had already bought most her albums and locked myself in my room and lapped them up. She will always be the best.

More or less a brilliant poetry slam with music to accompany it. This isn't music as we normally see it, it's free-form, no constant rhythm or signature. Amazing. She's giving a lot here, so much of herself, I've never seen anything like it.

Watch the opening number twice. The first time enjoy the lyric, the second time watch the dancing right hand of Joni as she makes her guitar ring. Another worthwhile side trip would be the article on Chum City building (wikipedia) to read about how the facility was designed for innovative TV production. Keeping in mind that this video is twenty years old the place where she recorded the show is amazing for its time.

I was in high school when this album finally came out. I had been tracking Joni's songs through other performer's albums, e.g., Ian and Sylvia, Tom Rush, Buffy Sainte Marie. She had a profound impact on me, the way I write, and the way I listen. I've been playing Marcie for most 50 years, and never have grown tired of it.

I worked for a retail music company back in the early 90's and I picked up a copy of 'Night Ride Home' and I remember being shocked when I heard how much Joni's voice had changed since her early albums and even the stuff from the late 70's. I really didn't follow her career in the 80's but that's when I started collecting her albums, eventually owning her first eight studio albums which I still have and still listen to, great stuff. It's sad that she is 69 now and can't sing at all. :(

65,854 is a lot of views I guess but - this is priceless stuff. The world just forgets I guess. I've never been one of those people who say, "Oh things were better in my day". But let's be objective, the 40's were great for the standards, the 60's for rock, 80's for funk and R&B. But Joni is and always will be a treasure. But so many people now don't even know who she is. This actually is the fault of capitalism. Ironically the only means by which I would have ever heard her is the same profit machine that keeps the assembly line moving until the great is pushed out of the way. ANYWAY, great great stuff and as I said priceless insight to get into her head where the genius is revealed.
