MTH O-Scale New York City Subway R62A (7) Train Set

Here is the new-ish R62(A) 7 subway set from MTH. Out of the box, the set does not come with MTA logos, and the 7 signage does not include the purple circle/diamond because of MTA licensing. I made several modifications to the set which include:
- Replacing the 7 on the front with the proper circle bullet
- Adding the circle 7 bullet to the side signs
- Renumbering cars with realistic road numbers
- Moving rollsigns to correct locations
In addition to the signage flaws, there are many other problems with this set. The road numbers are 1650, 1651, 1746 and 1747. 1650 is not an actual R62 or R62A car. The R62 order ends at 1625 and the R62A order starts at 1651. As mentioned earlier, the 7 signage is not realistic, but that is because of MTA licensing and not a flaw. The rollsign placement, however, is a problem. The signs are not in the correct window, they are placed in the window with the opening section when in real life that is not the case.
For sounds, the set is a 7 local and the stations listed are Main St, 111 St, 74 St, 40 St, Queensboro, Court Sq, Grand Central, Times Square, and Hudson Yards. The sounds are done by the usual MTH announcer. The sound set does not include a door chime, unfortunately. While it is not the biggest deal, it is a shame to see the lack of attention to detail put into a product where detail is of the utmost importance.
Unless you are looking for the MTH R62 set and missed out the first time, or you really like the R62A 7 train, I don't know if I can recommend this set to anyone. Obviously, this is a product line where MTH does not have much competition. Lionel no longer makes subway sets, so if you are in the market for a set, you are stuck with whatever MTH offers. It is a shame to see the quality of the subway sets decreasing year after year. The 2010 MTH R142A 6 set was very high in quality and included incredible sounds and an incredible build. While this set doesn't have the issues of some other sets, like the 2014 MTH R142A 4 set with the reversed and non-color head and taillights, terrible "Stand Clear" announcement, and signage problems which affected several units, the flaws of this set are still disappointing. Hopefully, in 2019 with the new R12 and R40 sets coming out, the quality is better than that of what was offered this year.

Pure Awesomeness!! My dad was a motorman for the 7 train and we live near the 103 Corona plaza station. we would wait for him and than ride to the last stop than back- so many memories THANKS!

Hmm, Very interesting. I'm just not sure why MTH always mis places the signs most of the time, or puts the wrong roll sign. For example, this set came with the 7 covering the whole window instead of the roll sign you corrected...And I agree with you on how their trains quality had decreased over the years of them making it. I'm not sure to why nobody inspects the trains in the factory before putting them in the shop. Anyways, Awesome Video 👍

This is why the 7 train is my favorite subway train in NYC growing up. Luckily, it's still my favorite because hashtag is 7 train forever!

That spiral is such a clever way to emulate the tunnels. I would install shorter couplers on the trains.
This was a dream of my eight year old self. Great work! Nice to see it realized by someone.
The layout is awesome! If I had a complaint, it would be that the cars are to far apart in between as the couplings need to be shortened. They are too far apart for walking between cars. I do realize that it may not be cost efficient.

As a New Yorker I love my Iron Horse aka NYC Transit, but it needs to he repair. I know my amazing and beautiful city is going to one of the most hardest times, but I know my NYC and the people of my amazing NYC will be back better than ever👏👏👏 NYC will be better, because we NYC don’t give up. It would be cool to see some weathering effects on the train and the tracks. This just looks a little to clean for being a nyc subway. You could try to add some washes or dry brushing to add some realism. Also you could add some people inside the train.

That’s real nice only one thing I have grapes which there is no engine noise on a real subway. It’s all electric. Do you do here a winding noise with the train moves and rumbling noise from the wheels. The announcement is on point. Very nice otherwise. Still love it though
I like the 'Neu Yawk" accent on the PA announcements. I've actually seen models where the doors slide open and closed. But the couplers are way too big. The cars should be closer together.

Another problem with this set is the fact thats its undersized as compared to the other subway sets unless they fixed that which I doubt since I never read on any retooling.

Christopher Henderson yep u right. But compared to the r40 they r still undersized and the r40 are to scale. Never liked this set. In fact sold the r62 a while back. Just got another r142 set. My fav are the r1. Simply the best detail imho.

NYC subway trains don't sound their horns to enter or leave a station. You might be thinking of Long Island RR or Metro-North (but they generally only sound their horns when entering, not leaving)

In conventional operation, you can trigger the station announcements multiple times before actually starting the automated station-stop simulation.

You can purchase shorter couplers and from MTH and change them from the stock couplers for a more realistic look and less gap between the cars.

Ostensibly so the train can run around sharp-radius curves. The actual spacing is far in excess of what's needed, and you can buy short dummy couplers for more realistic spacing. I think MTH (actually most 3-rail 'O' producers) is reluctant to make a passenger set with non-operating couplers.

He didn't edit the train. This is a new set MTH released. He just changed the rollsign to the proper (7)
