MTD Snowblower Doesn't Move - HOW to FIX!

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

Step by Step Tutorial!
In today's video, we'll be looking at a YardMachines snowblower (MTD) that won't move forward or back!
The reason this happens is due to the roller bearings seizing up. These bearings are located inside the gears that mount on the drive axle.
If you contact MTD customer service & tell them you're experiencing this issue, they may send you an MTD Drive Repair Kit Part # 75305173A at no cost. However, this issue can still occur, as the new kit is identical to the old parts.
Once we drained the oil, flipped it up and removed the access panel, we can begin our disassembly.
Following the steps in this video, you'll be able to remove both the upper and lower axles, to gain access at the gear bearings.
You don't have to remove both gears, however, I recommend cleaning and lubricating both gears! As you'll see in the video, even though the upper gear still rotated on the shaft, once we removed it we could see it didn't have any lubrication inside of it (Meaning this issue would have happened again).
I also replaced both outer bearings for the lower axle as well.
Once everything was cleaned, we greased the bearings using Roller Bearing specific grease (It's super sticky and won't come out as easy).
We then reassemble everything, and lubricate both axles.
After these steps are completed, we use Oil and Grease remover to wipe down the friction wheel and drive disc, to ensure there is no slippage of the friction wheel when driving!
If you follow the steps in this video, this repair should take you anywhere from 1.5 to 2.5 hours to complete. You may also need a wide range of tools to complete this repair.

The roller bearings can be pressed out and replaced if they are too badly damaged. The roller bearing part numbers are SCE1211 (2 for the wider gear) and SCE1214 (1 for the narrow gear). I've also heard you may need an SCE1212 and SCE1210 so please measure and research. Cheaper than buying a Drive Repair Kit - MTD Part # 75305173A This video just shows you how to repair the issue without replacing the gears. Thanks for watching everyone!

Many people have said that if you call and complain, they will send you a $200 repair kit free of charge. This is due to it being a "silent recall". I however, have not done that, so I can't speak from my own experiences.

I am actually doing a Troybilt at the moment. The wheels are completely frozen fast although the machine has little if any rust. Tomm when the weather clears up I am going to take the old smoke wrench to the wheels and the puller.. I cannot believe how they are seized on that little shaft. I may attempt to also drill thru the wheels so I can use a steering wheel puller on the wheels to help in the issues. This is not the norm for these machines but a few of em have what seems like a black locktite not just holding the wheel bolts but the wheel itself. I seen a video of guy that ended up cutting the axle and machining out the wheel hubs. What a friggin drag wrecking both the axle and wheel hubs.

Greatest how to video I have ever found on KZread! I am always learning how to fix things because most people would throw something out that they don't know how to fix, I would rather figure out how to fix it. I was really just wondering what would cause a snow blower wheel to seize and I found your video. I had only planned on watching a few minutes to get an idea for the repair but I ended up watching all 33 minutes of your video. Extremely informative, you took it nice and slow but not so slow that it was painful to watch, I really wish all KZread videos could be like yours. You definitely just got another subscriber, thanks so much for the info :)

Great step-by-step instructional video. Your directions helped me with the bearings in the large dual gear located on the lower drive axle. The bearings on the end were fine. It was the roller bearings in the large gear that locked up my wheels from turning. Removed it, sprayed the bearings with silicone spray to lubricate them and then applied grease. Reassembled, Bob's your uncle! Thanks for this. Saved me a lot of my own trouble shooting. Cheers!!

Just repaired my MTD blower with this same problem. Toughest part was getting the gear off the wheel axle even after removing the rust from the axle. Both bearings on both axles and one of the outside bearings seized all at the same time, 3 out of 4. Now they’re all greased and working again. Thx for this video great job!

My local parts store, replaces that gear set with a brass bushing, which has of course the same inside and outside measurements as the original needle bearings. As you can see, there is no way to properly maintain those needle bearings. They are buried in there. As seen in this outstanding video, the only way to properly prevent this is to remove the gear sets out of the machine and press grease into them. Spraying from the outside will not get the grease in there. I've pressed out the original seized bearing set and pressed in the brass bushing. It will never seize again, with a brass bushing in there. Thank you for such a detailed and precise explanation of what you did. Truly one of the best tutorials I have seen on all of KZread.

I am not The Most Mechanically Inclined Person, But at times I Can Be. But Due to Your Incredibly thorough video, I followed you Steps 1 By 1 and Found the Lower Axle Bearing, which is the Exact One That was Seized in the Video. I ended up removing it and Used a Old Family remedy to Remove the rust, Which I couldn’t believe it Worked because the Roller Bearings were All completely Seized with Solid Rust, But after 20-30 minutes of Soaking, I used an old Tooth Brush and Spent about 5 Minutes Brushing the Rust Out and it Completely took all the Rust off and The Roller Bearing Rolled Just Like Brand New!!!! I Greased Everything Back Up And Reassembled the Unit Step by Step and it Actually Moves and Works better than Brand New!!!! It Cost me Less Than $10 for Brake Cleaner and Marine Grease and a Gun!! It Took Me About 3 Hours to complete and SINCERELY WANT TO THANK YOU!!! I Appreciate the time you put into your video, Because It Was Priceless to Me. Keep up the Great Work Thanks, Rich

95% of all snowblowers found in America came out of assorted MTD plants. The one in this vid is about the most basic you can get your hands on. They are dirt cheap to repair..easy to work on...decent build quality...and the Tecumseh Snow King motor is legendary. They really are very good for what they are and cheap and plentiful to find used.

Instead of buying a new gear assembly, I press the old bearings out and two new ones in. There are two bearings #SCE-1211. Got them for $12 each from advanced auto. The other gear has 1 bearing. # SCE-1214. I have one on order but after cleaning it good and packing it I am good for now. Have one on the shelf if needed! I need to look to see if you have a video for lubing the gearbox on rotor. If not, that would be a good one for us that never knew how to properly maintain this machine. Thanks!

TY EP! What we have here is one of the most professional "how to" videos carefully detailing how to accomplish a difficult task into a walk in the park. You have knocked it out of the park! My Yardman (aka MTD) drive just stopped working. Ironically, I changed the drive belt when I replaced both auger belts (belts worked but were 20 years old!) just a few weeks ago. I hold down the drive handle, and nothing happens. Changing gears does not change this experience. Any guesses as to what is wrong? Anyway, I have yet to determine the cause and found this video in preparation for what I may be dealing with. The *worse* part of this video is the guilt I have for not realizing all the preventative maintenance I should have been doing within the gear housing. In my defense, I give her new plug, oil, and lube the items _outside_ of the gear housing every year. I was afraid of breaking what isn't broke by removing the gear cover lol - cheers!

Thanks for the kind words Chris, sounds like you have a friction wheel issue, it's possible that the cable just needs adjustment. Check out my latest vid on that: kzread.info/dash/bejne/dKWEp7VtXZuaeqg.html Hope this helps!

Very informative video and since you showed the model identification at the beginning i was able to source that this snowblower was manufactured in 2006 so basically the original grease in the roller bearings of the gears lasted 12 years. Appears to me that the original design may have been flawed since sealed roller bearings would have been a better design holding grease in without outside contamination. Your gear replacement costs must have been USD since i have seen the larger gear priced at $105 CDN for a MTD OEM replacement gear. Looking forward to your next video, again great job!

You can get those bearings at any bearing supply house. Press out the old, press in the new. Done. No need for new gears unless they are worn out.

I fired up my old ass snowthrower the other day. It's been sitting for two years and it wouldn't move. It finally moved after being on for almost ten minutes. Crazy thing is, it's the same exact snowthrower as what's in this video. I can't wait to try this fix this coming Spring. It only snows, like really snow, around 5 times here and probably need the snowthrower once or twice a year, but man, it's a lifesaver.

I have run across a few with the cross axle that was so rusted you couldn't move the lever. I have never had an internal gear bearing seized up like that. I have found a few in need of oil really badly. MTD blowers are complete garbage in my book. Sadly, they took over the market because they are sold so cheap. People think they are getting a great deal but they are not. Nice video for anyone that wants to fix one of these units. I know one shop that will not even work on MTD. He tells people its going to cost more to fix the issue than the blower is worth. He is correct on that.

The lever and wheel will lock- (Freezing or lubrication issues?)If possible I would like to see a video of the mechanics and parts involved with the steering mechanisms. Not sure if the problems are cable or gear related. Thanks.

As an FYI, you can press the bearings out of these gears and press new ones in, instead of replacing the entire gear assembly. The bearing numbers are on the side of the bearing. Usually needle/roller bearing seals wear out. This allows the grease to leak out and water & dirt in. So, cleaning & greasing buys time, but will fail again not too far down the road. Excellent video though, thanks!
