This Craftsman LT2000 has been mowing for a couple months after I sold it and it has now come back for a repair. The trans pulley fell off, so while I'm down there I put new drive belts on it for the customer as well as it was a little slow to drive. It now drives much faster!

You were supposed to run the bolt through that plate that you cut off and then through the pulley

The part you cut off is for the pulley that fell off in the beginning of video. That plate holds both pulleys for parking brake

I have the exact same model as you and the nut is used as a spacer on the back side of the pulley, which is VERY hard to get that in place before tightening it.

I found 2 bolts on left side of frame above the rear axle. Removing them made the variable speed pulleys move enough to change the belts.

This is why i don't to many tractors anymore . i really enjoy watching you do these. I have done a lot over the years. , Don't get me wrong, however I am too old to spend that much time laying on the ground Remember I will be a senior this year. . I have a homemade wire to pull those springs on. It is attached to a T handle. It hangs on my pegboard to this day.

The manual is on line now if you search for it. This arrangement for the drive is the most klugey thing I think I’ve ever seen. That random nut was an omen on the pulley you were refitting. The arrangement of the spacers also threw me, especially as I lost one. Those spacers are $14 each. Here’s a tip: before we work on broken stuff I find it best to first understand how the thing was designed and supposed to work. Like really understand how this thing was made this way and how it is supposed to properly function. Most of us just dive in and over the years I think the key is to stop and understand before grabbing for wrenches. Take notes and pictures and maybe video - then start working on it. Thanks for the video - it was the only one I could find that featured this kluge setup on the LT2000.

I have this exact same mower. I took my deck off to clean out from under all the pulleys and I noticed my drive belt was really cracked. It has lasted 10 years so I figured I got my money out of it. Anyways. I got everything done up to the pulley on the back of the mower, the one where you loosened the three bolts from underneath. I did the same and I can not for the life of me get the old belt off. I would really like to be able to do this myself since I'm unemployed at the moment and don't have the money to pay someone else to do it. If you have any further tips on how to get the old belt off and the new one on that rear pulley let me know. Thanks.

You need to buy the oem belt for the variable speed drive. If you use a off brand for example on ebay or amazon, then you will have problems like that. The oem belt is a weird length and angle. Non oem ones are either a little shorter or longer and the angle of the groove is wrong also.

You put that pulley up side down. Turn it the other way push through that bracket hole, which you don't know where it goes, and slide the nut, which is used as a spacer between the pulley and the threaded bracket. The pulley will now spin freely. Refer to my previous comment about the spacer. I'm having a hard time getting the belt on to the back pulley. Do you have any help with that?

So the nut goes on top of the pulley? Mine is just a brass nut maybe 1/2”. Weird design. It fell on the ground when I removed that idler pulley and I wasn’t sure where it went.

  • @wakersten

If you loosen the bolt underneath the rear lower pulley (it is in the middle of the three smaller bolts - leave those in as the shroud can move and make it really hard to realign them, which is exactly what happened to me) you can get some play which allows the pulley mechanism to be pulled upward enough to slide the belt on and then drop it back down inside the belt guide. I had to use some vice grips on the top of the pulley - and it's a rounded end- to keep it from rotating with the bolt. It's a major pain.

I wish you actually showed how you got the smaller belt on. I need to install that one and I can't for the life of me figure out how except to take the bigger pulley off. Is that what you did? Seems like that shouldn't be the case. I have never had more trouble with drive belts before. I have an Ariens that is so easy. This mower is garbage.

You have to take the big pulley loose in order to get the belt between it and the frame. 15/16" and is pretty tricky to wedge a socket in there to remove. Also you must use OEM belts for these machines. Generic Amazon belts cause drive issues with the varidrive pulley.
