MTBS Ep. 1: How to build an electric BMX bike and hurt yourself with it!

Спорт

Episode 1 of Mike Tinkers and Builds Stuff is all about my electric BMX bicycle build. You'll learn what it takes to build one (mostly), and where you should and should not ride one! You also get to watch me break a bone! How exciting, right?!?

    Well that's neat. I also put an electric BMX type bike with a 750W front hub. Top speed I've reached: 32MPH. Tons of fun yes!

    Nice build and very FAST bike "WOW". QUESTION; Why did you change out the controller from the one that came with the Ebike kit?

    i didn't buy a complete ebike kit. I bought the motor, controller, and battery all separately and wired it all together.

    Really nice build. Please, do you use rear hub motor with freewheel ? Was it 135mm and you had to wider your bmx wheel space? Bmx is usually only 110mm. Or did you find some producer who makes 110mm rear hub with freewheel? Thank you for advice

    Jan Zahoran Thanks for the compliment! I had leafmotor make a 110mm hub motor with a freewheel, but no brake mount. If I were to do it again, I'd stretch my frame to 135mm instead.

    Hey man thanks for the tutorial and great e-bike. I am looking to convert my kids bikes to the same and the thing is I would need to order products from China. Those leaflike products are from Hong Kong, can you tell me about your experience; price, shipment, taxes, do they shop to your residence, etc. thank you.

    Shipping was normal, it shipped straight to my house and didn't take all that long. Now, with the current shipping backups, who knows? When ordering, I had to email them and get a modified motor to fit a BMX, but now I think they offer a BMX specific kit. I'd just email them directly. They were good with prompt communication. For a kids bike, you really don't need a motor this big. It's really powerful and also heavy. Good luck!

    awesome!!!! we need more BMXs electrified. the speed is insane my 2ct...(if I would build one) having a mid-otor would distribute the weight better but is a no-go for ground clearance. so what about TWO geared-hubmotors, AWD!! way smaller, around 250W-500W each? as small and light as possible. also a custom battery filling the whole frame triangle(instead of the boxy looking battery)

    Those are all good ideas and would make a real fun BMX. This was my first ebike build, so I wanted to keep it simple.

    What kind of torque did it have? Is it for sale?

  • @MikeTinkersandBuildsStuff

    @MikeTinkersandBuildsStuff

    Adam Stickley it's got good torque. Not flip-you-on-your-back torque. But it wheelies very easily. It makes about 3hp and probably 15lb/ft of torque. I'm not really looking to sell it, but i'd take $1500 + shipping...

    I just saw a video recently where the guy had a BMX setup w/the electric hub in the back like yours. It freaking pulled WHEELIES. From a dead stop. I mean, I am a lean guy at 200lbs or so. (90.71kg) and 5' 10" (1.77m) If it could pull you up those hills that are near-impossible with a BMX gearing setup...that would be very useful. I like to pedal. The twist throttle "assist" tho? That is absolute stuff of legend. Good on you for your build. It looks very solid and almost utilitarian in a way, but with style.

    Adam Stickley thanks man! If you mean Klemon Fikon's bike, yeah, that thing has 5 or 6 times the power my bike makes! And it is rad as hell. Not many serious hills around here, so I'm not sure how to gauge it's uphill power, but I'm 170 lbs and it pulls me around with no problems.

    47? HAH! There has been much tinkering on the BMX since this video & I've gotten mine past 55! ... And then I crashed it. Here's the videos on insta: instagram.com/p/CBAvTBkhzbq/?igshid=ia7va53rnvii AWD sounds smart. Probably more stable and less wheelie prone, right?
