Mt. Saint Helens Summit - Ptarmigan Trail

INCREDIBLE! I started at the climbers bivouac trail head an hour before sunrise and was back at my car just after sundown. I'm pretty sure the entire day was a dream. The weather was absolutely perfect all day and the views were unspeakably good. A challenging climb of course but it only makes the rewards that much better. I did this climb on 11/22/2019 just before the road to the trail head closed for the winter (it was closed by the 25th due to snow).
Travelers Tips -
Permit requirements: You will need a climbing permit to summit. They can be obtained at the trail head after 11/1.
Getting there: A relatively simple drive overall (about 1 hr & 45 min from the PDX area) but the 4 mile drive up to the climbers bivouac is littered with potholes. I got up there in a 2WD with lowish clearance but I had to be slow and careful.
Gear: You will need crampons or microspikes, poles, necessary clothing for the mountains, and possibly ice axes.

I'm going next summer. I remember when it erupted when I was a child. I was fascinated back then. Can't wait to hike to the summit.

I went yesterday. First time, by myself. I didn’t summit unfortunately. The boulders were bigger than I thought and I was worried the height would affect me and it did. I hope to try again but be smarter with having someone and bringing gloves and hopefully can make it.

So excited to do this hike next year. I plan for this to be my first mountain to ever summit.

I live 30 minutes from the mountain near Cougar. I’m going to attempt it this year. My first summit. I was wondering what the best route for a first timer is?

Basically it's just one route depending on time of year -- worms flows (winter) and ptarmigan trail (summer). Both are well travelled. Have fun!!

@@margaritagonzalez5011 I have -- gloves are definitely a must. Microspikes or crampons could be necessary depending on conditions
