Mt. Aso - the Largest Volcano in Japan

I had a chance to visit Kyushu for work and took that opportunity to explore Mt. Aso - the largest volcano and caldera in Japan. Mt. Aso is part of the Aso Kuju National Park, and is a large area with 5 main summits - Nakadake, Takadake, Nekodake, Mt. Eboshi, and Mt. Kishima. I went to 4/5 - all of them except for Mt. Eboshi. But in this video, I just go to Nakadake and Takadake. (And show you the interestingly shaped Nekodake via drone.) The trail I took in this video was the Sunasenri trail- which I highly recommend. It's open to hiking even when the main crater area is closed because of excessive poisonous gases.
The trailhead is here: goo.gl/maps/2NKKTLu1Q84op96v7

I have visited Mt Aso twice. The first time we were not allowed to the crater because of the gases it was emitting however on my next visit some months later we had a lot more success. I have to admit I have not seen another place like it in Japan. When you are getting close you can see the jagged mountain ranges which I assumed is the caldera which gives it a prehistoric look. It is impressive to see the whole area but for me nothing beats Mt Fuji viewed from the lake shoreline. It's hard to explain what you feel to be in the presence of this monster. All I know that if she were to have a full on eruption, the hotel we stayed at across the lake would not survive. Nice video, brought back memories of 2004/2005. Thanks for sharing.

Hi! Wow, this was a long time ago. You can find other people's times for hikes on websites like alltrails and Yamap.. There's no entrance fee. That trip was late summer/early fall. In Japan you need to register with the Japanese government (online) and pay a registration fee for drones! There is a lot of information on this in English if you google.

The Aso caldera is actually the earth's largest caldera. Most caldera lists miss off Aso, I wonder why? Possibly because several are presented as the largest as part of their tourist information. Nakadake has a beautiful blue sulfuric-acid lake within it. I lived in Kumamoto for several years whilst working at the Honda Kikuchi motorcycle factory. Incidentally, the earthquakes around Kumamoto are magmatic, whereas in most parts of Japan they are seismic. Seismic events shake you horizontally, magmatic events lift and drop you.

@@coffeygrinds it would look the same. This thing erupts ever year and a half or so. It erupted back in 2019 as well so any given burp out of this thing doesn't change the area very much.

It’s a bit bumming that even though my asthma rarely ever affects me anymore the couple times it starts to act up is on long hikes or high vog activity (volcanic gas fog) so any volcanoes are no goes for me during times of high activity . It’s sad cause I love the hazy look and all the plumes/geysers But safety first 🤷‍♂️
