    I use my MSQ-100 as a MIDI looper for jamming. The overdub function let's you record several synth on different MIDi channels. The MSQ-100 is great vintage stuff.

    @@PingPong85 Let' say i´m recording a bass line on MIDI channel 1. Then I switch the load mode to overdub. Now I can record strings on channel 2 and for ex. a lead on channel 5. I don't have to worry about setting MIDI channels on MSQ-100. It records what ever channel comes in. And the best of all, you can delete notee from a specific MIDI channel if you play a missstake.

    That was my very first sequencer EVER.. i learned so much on that thing (regarding MIDI channels, and creating different parts on the synth).. way back in around 1986 maybe.. To be using Maschine and other DAWs, and VST instruments, on a laptop and doing things digitally now, that MSQ looks like a dinosaur.. but that little beast de-virginized me.. Good presentation bro

    Still have one and used it back in Late 80’s early 90’s mostly to record some super crazy bass lines. Then we dumped them into MMT8’s and an MC-50. My friend was wizard with this thing. Watching him record note by note was mesmerizing - fingers flying all over the place. 🖐🏼🤓

    Wow, I forgot I had one of these back in 1988. I too used it with a Juno-106. Great products!!! It worked well but later that year I bought my first computer...The Atari Mega ST4. The MIDI DAW blew away the MSQ-100 because you could see the notes on the screen and edit them easily with the mouse. So I sold the MSQ. No regrets....BUT I DO regret selling the Juno when I bought the D50. Having all the knobs/sliders to program the synth is FAR superior than using a tiny LCD menu tree.

    I'm new to synths and have a basic question about polyphony. After I have hit play on a sequence and want to play over it as you were I notice the sequence starts "loosing" some notes. Does that mean I cannot use the same notes that were used in the sequence?

  • @PingPong85

    @PingPong85

    2 жыл бұрын

    For this particular synth (Juno106) yes you are correct. That note you hear in the sequence is being played from the synth and can't be played at the same time with your hands. That's why it's good to use sequencers as a bass or a highnote arpeggio. Cheers!

    Hello, when I use real time loading I have no problem syncing my volca beats to the metronome (just a simple midi out of msq into midi in of volca), but in step load the sequence sounds in time but the metronome is completely off which makes the volca beats play to the out of time metronome. Any idea on why that’s happening? I can’t figure it out. Thanks for the video

    Unfortunately, I wasn't able to replicate that problem. MIDI time clock can be finicky and this device came out just when MIDI was introduced as a standard.

    Very good. If you could do another one on the way it allows its version of multitracking that would be good. I find the instruction manual doesn't read very well on that and it is not straight forward!

  • @PingPong85

    @PingPong85

    5 жыл бұрын

    Thanks! It can't really multitrack per-se (e.g. different midi tracks) but you can add notes in a different octave as long as you respect your polyphony. So you can record a simple bass line in the lower register and then record on top some stabs. I assume that's what you meant :)

    The MSQ 100 has MIDI In, Out & Out/Thru ports on the back.. you connect the MIDI cable in your synth (from the MIDI Out) to the MSQs MIDI In, & the Out from the MSQ to your synth's In.. & the MSQ's Thru can go to your Drum Machine's In.. You have to set the MIDI channels for whatever sounds you use on your Synth to correspond to the MIDI playback channel in the MSQ (for whatever instrument channel you chose for each particular instrument). The Drum Machine has to sync with the MSQ.. You could probably get away with putting the Omni ALL on your drum machine (unless you are using your synth as a controller to program the beats in the Drum Machine). That can get you started.. But Read your manual for how to do specific things.. thats how i learn that MSQ back in the day... (now a days they don't even put a manual in the box.. you have to go online and hunt for info)

    @@riseofthemachine2623 other than minimoog OUT-> to msq 100 IN and msq100 OUT -> minimoog in, there isn't much to do... The only things I can think of is getting the midi channel receive and send correct. Maybe setting it to something other than channel 1. Also, maybe the minimoog (don't have much experience with it's midi implementation) is in OMNI mode. or the write protection is on on the msq. Take a look at the dip switches on the back of the msq and see if they make sense. Sometimes midi is sensitive... remember the msq basically came out when midi was first introduced. Good luck!

    @@PingPong85 Thanks so much for your input! It was easy as can be when I used it with my Juno-106 a few years back, but that one went on it's journey and I hadn't dug out the MSQ until recently...Perhaps another thing to consider is it may have quietly gone to the great beyond between then and now. Kudos again for responding!
