Mrs. Coulter MOVIE VS SERIES || (scene comparison) His Dark Materials/The Golden Compass

Ойын-сауық

This video is comparing the different adaptations of Mrs.Coulter from the “His Dark Materials” books written by Philip Pullman. You’ll also be able to see the different versions of Pan, Lyra, and Coulter’s Dæmon (called Ozymandis in the radio adaptation). I think that both actresses (Ruth Wilson & Nicole Kidman) are amazing! I grew up with His Dark Materials so I’m excited to see where the series will go. I’m aware that there are many many adaptations of these books... not only the movie and Tv show but a stage play, radio play, and a video game (adapted from the movie). There wasn’t a recording from the stage play I could find so sadly I couldn’t include it.
I do not own the footage or music in this video.. it is from “His Dark Materials” on HBO/BBC and “The Golden Compass” from New Line Cinema/Warner bros. No copyright infringement intended.
Please support the show, movie, and books! Thanks for checking out this video. Hope you enjoy this stuff as much as I do :)

I have read a lot of fantasy books (like Harry Potter, Lord of the Rings and Game of Thrones) and there is no character like Mrs. Coulter. I think portraying her (either on a movie or a TV show) is literally impossible because she is really really complex! Starting from this premisse... I believe that the real Mrs. Coulter (from the books) is a mix of Nicole Kidman and Ruth Wilson´s Mrs. Coulter. You never know what are her inner thoughts, her intentions, her feelings! She is completely inpredictable. Nicole Kidman managed to portray a manipulative, serene, educated and kind Mrs. Coulter, while Ruth Wilson managed to portray an aggressive, confused, conflictuous, depressed and powerful Mrs. Coulter. I think the movie is not that great, but Nicole Kidman is the best part of it. I think Ruth Wilson and Nicole Kidman could be considered two sides of the same Mrs. Coulter!

I couldn’t have said it better myself! I can’t agree more with this comment. I think both Mrs. Coulters represent different sides of the character... adapting the books in general is very difficult.. and both the movie and the show have mixed reviews, but I think Nicole Kidman and Ruth Wilson did so well with the character! they are the highlights of both versions

Ruth was far more effective at showing that Marisa believed in what she was doing. She was still evil, but she believed in her cause. She also showed true love towards things she cared for. I find it interesting that Mrs. Coulter keeps hitting her deamon. I think she was the only character at least in the show that's struck her own daemon or abused it in some way. Yet it's clear that when a daemon feels pain it's human feels a corresponding pain. So it's like... Mrs. Coulter self-injures? Definitely a sign of an underlying mental issue, like other forms of self-harm irl.

I find the relationship between human and daemon incredibly interesting and intriguing. It shows such depth into how someone sees themselves. Mrs. Coulter hates herself/parts of herself and she shows that so well in the treatment and aloofness of and towards her daemon. I can't imagine doing that. I would be very close to my daemon, I'm sure.

SketchTheParadigm York, Yeah.. the Dæmons are definitely not as present in the show. This is probably due to how expensive it is to add them, and having to animate the bears as well... I think they’ve done the best with what they were given. The cgi is amazing! But I definitely felt the bond more in the movie. Pan especially has such few lines in the show. And I’ve seen many people say that during the intercision they weren’t emotionally affected due to the fact that the dæmons have such little screen time... I'm guessing the daemons have a lessor role because they are so damn expensive like others have said. The CGI in this show is some the best out there, better than alot of movies. Im guessing they couldn't afford ( both time and money) to do every daemon for every character, the rendering time alone would of delayed the entire show. I guessing they expect us to imagine all the daemons are all there, just out of focus when not actively interacting with characters. They really did focus on making the main daemons ultra realistic and life like, the scene were Mrs Coulter especially on the TV show version hit her daemon is actually kind of scary because it actually seem like abuse because of the way the daemon responds to being hit. (music helped too ) Honestly i think it boils more down to not having enough time to render that many daemons when i think about it, HBO is filthy rich so they could afford the cost of doing many daemons, but it would just take forever to do it, each episode is like a movie length long, which means the FX artist have less time then they would for a movie. on top of that they used puppeteers to reference the CGI models of the daemons, can you imagine how crowed it would have been to have a puppeteer for every actor on set lol

I like the script from the series more than the movie's. The dialogues are really meaningful and deep. When Lyra sadly go back into her room after the deamons fight, Mrs Coulter with such confusing emotion (idk if it's sad, regret or anything) follows her and said "Our origin doesn't define us, what we do is what we have ..." It's just a simple addition but meaningful. She didn't ask for a kiss, cause it's too clear, it's a cheap manipulation, and Lyra is a same clever girl as she is, won't easily got manipulated by it. If we look more closer, Ruth Wilson's Mrs. Coulter does have elegant aspects, but it's realistic. For an educated female that busy with the government projects, she is surrounded by glamour things perfectly, although her wardrobe seems so formal, far from 'chick' impression but it's logic and still look elegant. And the series tell us more the way she is mentally complex, it's amazing, she's not just beauty and cunning but also powerful, that's the point, power what brings her to such character. So, I think Ruth Wilson's Mrs. Coulter has more plus, cause the series tell us more.

I think a lot of people prefer tv Mrs Coulter might be from the way she bonds with Lyra eg. she always rub Lyra's cheek like what a mother figure would do. In the movie it weren't show that much or at all due to the movie time being short. The tv Mrs Coulter makes me a little uncomfortable from the way she treats people who didn't obeyed her. Her voice tone also is very on a different level like a mother but in the same time just like a villian cold but still has a slight warmth in it. Her personality is way much more mysterious and a lot more darker. The way she hid the truth from Lyra also is very excellent. I always wondered what her daemon was feeling when he petted Pan (in dark materials). Was it a power move or was it genuine affection. It could be both knowing Mrs. Coulter, but that scene always struck me as strange since her daemon is known to be quite vicious even with Lyra. Though he was the one screaming when she ran away instead of Mrs. Coulter; either that’s how strong her emotions were or some of it was his as well (or maybe both). In a way, since Lyra is Mrs. Coulter’s daughter, Pan is like Mrs. Coulter’s daemon’s son (if souls could be related).

Both actresses did a great job! Nicole is very good in the charming and manipulative side of Mrs. Coulter and Ruth in the scary and unsteady mental side of her and portrays more depth with her eyes and face. She unsettles me a bit more and that's exactly what Mrs. Coulter is supposed to do/portray. So those parts are my favs for both actresses but if I HAD to choose 1 of them, I'd think I like Ruth's portrayal a bit more :) On another note, seeing the scenes compared, I once again am a bit sad/disappointed with the daemon portrayals. As in frequency and bond between human and dae. It's probably budget oriented but still, I do miss it in the series..

Ruth wilson is a great actress but way to emotional and agressive for the character. In the books ms. coulter is cruel with a beautiful smile and devilish in elegance. Only in the last book towards the end she gets more visibly emotional and warm.

It's been a long time but I do recall her being blonde (thought apparently even in the book they go from describing her having sleek black hair to golden so I think that's why I always imagined her as blonde), poised, and terrifying yet charming when she needed to manipulate people. I feel like Nicole nailed that role 100% I don't like it when characters who are described in novels as very controlled with their emotions being portrayed as unstable right off the bat in tv/movie adoptions to make them more "human" and relatable. If the books could develop her character and motivations over the course of 3 novels the show can too. It's a shame that the movies were so bad.

OH HELL YEAH, GET THE BOOKS! As is always the case, the original books will pull you deeper in and give more background than movies or series. For example- (Spoiler Alert.) What neither version did was show the strength of the bond between human and daemon the way the book does. One sequence that hits you in the face is when Lyra first meets Iorek and Pan tries to get close to him, while Lyra is unable to get past the gates. It shows very clearly and emotionally how it hurts to stretch their bond. Then, when they find the boy with no daemon, he has found a frozen fish somewhere which he clings to as if it were his daemon. Finally, on the boy's death, Lyra finds someone cooking this fish. She goes Apeshit. And by now, reading the book, you can fully empathise. There were moments in the book (and once in the series so far) when I had to stop reading/watching, and just go do something normal because it gets VERY dark and deep.

I beg to differ! Nicole Kidman is so gracious in every moves! More complex and hard to read whereas Wilson is giving more of THAT supporting actress who’s serving as a distraction in a good way like Jennifer Coolidge. Love her 😂 and her costumes are not so eye catching… :( like her first appearance is not so convincing nor impactful enough to really make an entrance. And the fact everything is all black, brown and gray. Doesn’t add up to her first wardrobe in dark green and blue skirt! I mean blue and green. It’s contradictory! They both are very good actresses but Wilson is giving more of a warm, kind hearted mother which doesn’t add up the character flaw of why she abandoned Lyra in the first place! 🤷🏻 And Kidman is more of a alluring femme fatale. It just makes it more unique since this femme fatale appeared to be Lyra’s mother. It was just unexpected… and WE love that!!! Which kinda makes sense since she projected herself as a independent strong woman and sometimes too free spirited to even look back at her daughter. You can see in the movie they both have mother-daughter issues. But in the series… I don’t see why this will be a problem that a kind looking woman could abandon her only daughter and not so cold nor bitter. Then all of a sudden she turned full on commando. Though her emotions are far more upfront and more dominant, Kidman is way more subtle but yet deep just like feminine rage. Wilson is more like that one lovely mother you see in every Hollywood movies whereas Nicole is more rounded and complicated. P.S. the fact that Kidman’s screen time is like 10 times less than Wilson’s but still serve us full emotional roller coaster is top notched !!!

Ruth Wilson's version is too dark and unsettling for me, while in the movie I could absolutely feel how carismatic Coulter can be, how easy it is for her to manipulate her surroundings. However it's the exact opposite for Asriel... I wish they could mix both versions, they should have taken some actors from the movie for the show. I liked Nicole and Daniel Craig, they're just how I imagined in the books. I even liked Lyra in the movie, she was a lot more ferocious while the tv-version Lyra always seems so unsure, timid and why is she always whispering? I can be forgiving of movie-Lyra's acting because she's a child, I don't expect her acting to be amazing, it actually makes it more endearing. Lord Asriel is meant to be cold, he was never a fatherly figure he was mostly focused on his ambition, it's even more apparent in the later books, so was Mrs. Coulter but she has her more motherly moments.

At the cost of being unpopular, I have to say that Nicole Kidman is the better of the two. So many people are praising Wilson's fragility, but that's the thing: Mrs. Coulter does not show any fragility at that point of the story. In the first book she's even described as "metallic", as if there's something artificial about her (I remember thinking she was supposed to be a robot the first time I read it as a child). The violence she shows to Lyra is not anticipated in any way, that's why it comes as a complete shock to both Lyra and the readers. I could see Ruth Wilson's rage coming from a mile away, because she seems always on a verge of a nervous breakdown (and what's with the random faraway looks?), which is the exact opposite of the usually cool, calm, and collected Mrs Coulter.

This is exactly what i thought. I agree with everything you said there. Plus, as far as i remember, the character of Mrs. Coulter in the novel looks charming with her gentle, gentle way of speaking (I remember Will even thinks that the way she speak sounds like a song or something) and her friendly demeanor. While Mrs. Coulter, played by Ruth Wilson, looks intimidating, and you know you don't want to get close to her even just by looking into her eyes. You could tell she had an ominous aura even just by glancing at her from a distance. That's why I'm confused as to why Lyra in the series looks so happy to meet Mrs. Coulter (she even had time to hug Mrs. Coulter too) even though the smile shown by Mrs. Coulter looked insincere. I'm not saying that Ruth Wilson's acting is bad, no, her acting is really good of course. It's just that, I prefer Nicole Kidman's version of Ms. Coulter because I think it fits better with the description in the book. Sorry for my broke english btw, english is not my first language 😬

The dialogue, effects, acting and visuals are all just terrible. Everyone says the film barely follows the story and the show does, but my friends and I have been doing a little project where we listen to a chapter of the audiobook and then watch the corresponding bits of the movie and show back to back: the movie does cut things out and shorten scenes, but none of the essential parts of the story are cut. The show cuts out just as much as the film does, but it also adds a bunch of stuff that isn't in the novel and ruins the story.

I'm only starting to watch the show so I can't comment on Ruth's performance yet but the way she carries herself and her wardrobe just don't give me that dazzling impression Mrs Coulter had in the book. Also some people say Nicole is too "flat" but I think it fits, her character is putting on an act all the time. Even though I was confused by it, especially by the ending (scenes from the trailer didn’t make the cut), I waited for a sequel, and I was disappointed it never happened. Apparently it is because the movie was a commercial and critical failure. I then forgot about the movie, until years later when I did research on the books, and I was horrified to learn about the anti-religious themes. I turned against the franchise because of that, but after the TV series started airing on HBO, and some advice from a churchgoer, I decided to “take it with a grain of salt.” I don’t agree with the themes, but I do like the concepts of dæmons, Panserbjørn, witches with recurve bows instead of brooms, and best of all, the alethiometer.

The TV show is so much better. It feels grounded in reality somehow while the movie is so damn campy. I guess it's because they were both addressing different audiences. I just looove Ruth Wilson's performance, she really can play a villain you love to hate. In my opinion Nicole felt too sweetened, like she was just playing herself.

Its probably because I grew up watching Golden Compass, and havent read the book yet (only recently learnt that a novel exists for it) but I truly enjoy Nicole Kidman's interpretation.... I remember feeling confused yet somewhat acidic towards her as a child (even now, towards her character that is) because of how her Daemon would behave, how she treated Lyra and how she treated her Daemon... It made me confused as to whether she really was wholeheartedly evil? If that makes sense... Of course, as an avid book reader I understand she may not coincide with the Mrs. Coulter presented within the book. I have not watched his Dark Materials yet, but when I do hopefully I remember this comment and come back to add on to it. From the clips I can tell Miss Wilson is a great actress, but I do prefer Kidman's interpretation. For me, I can feel her presence (Im sorry if im not making sense😂) more than Wilson, like I can feel that she's here and I feel like I'm walking on eggshells whereas with Wilson, it's more of an uncomfortable feeling (she definitely feels somehow- way more human imo than Kidman's). Kidman's character felt less smooth (emotional transitions) than Wilson's though, for sure. But I like that about it. When I have time, I cant wait to watch his dark materials & read the book.

I think Nicole's version is what Mrs. Coulter behaves when there is other people around, and when no one is looking she becomes Ruth's version.

People seem to be blinded by Nicole Kidman's beauty. Otherwise I can't explain how someone could prefer her soulless acting no child would ever feel enticing over the one by the amazing tv series actress

She perfectly played the character which script demanded. Their interpretation is different because the script is different. Soulless acting? Lol tell that to her Oscar
