canned fish, in the mackerel case, not heated in the fire, the fish is already cooked before packaging, which has made when heated, is saturating oil and remove nutrients that oil that comes in the package is for keep, regarding the lentils with chorizo, here in Spain, add bacon for flavor
La caballa no se calienta ni se cocina , se come directamente como si fuera atún en aceite , nose por qe me molesto si nadie me va a entender hahah

I love all the people commenting about him heating up the fish, when he clearly says you can eat it cold, but no use in wasting a fire.
Finally, the answer to where your wooden board got its burnt patch from... I shouldn't have watched your vids in random order ;)
He he he!!! You should've read the instructions before preparing the meals. You don't have to heat the fish of the can, but the soup of chicken, boy! The other can, yes, but you must mix well everything and eat with the sauce! A greeting from Spain!
LOL I watched this after I had seen the shows where you talk about having burnt the cutting board. I was watching it smoke while you were talking about the food and all. Good series btw, I just can't figure out why it's fascinating to watch someone else eat.

mephibosheth29 Yep, this is where the damage was done :-) You're not alone in wondering why these things are interesting. I asked myself the same question when I started watching others. For me it didn't come down to one, but a bunch of little reasons like Military history, food science, culture etc...
the fire tabs, and the glucose tabs looked a lot alike. On a dark night that could be dangerous.

El chorizo si es un sausage! Sausage en estados unidos no se refiere a la salchichas. En usa las salchichas son conocidas como frankfurters
gotta hand it to the spanish... they make a good fuel tab lol. in all seriousness though, i much prefer fuel tabs over flameless heaters. especially when you get extras. they are just super useful things to have in your kit.

Ty Guy I agree for the most part. I'd much rather have a portable stove over a U.S. FRH, but then I'd rather have a stash of Japanese FRH's over a portable stove. Those things are... well...nuclear (excuse the pun).

Hey Gundog! Yes, and I felt like Scrooge McDuck swimming through a pile of 'sport crack' and 'camu crack' tabs instead of coins. I did actually down the Vitamin C tab, but it quickly went from a slight taste of orange to a sprint to the sink. That part didn't make the cut. It's fascinating to experience radically new tastes. I wonder if lentils, sausages and lard(!) is a Spanish staple?

Now now Kiwi, we can't have alcohol in a combat zone. Though it is technically plausible. Some Japanese scientists have developed powdered alcohol. Sounds odd I know but how it works is a type of sugar-like powder that is highly absorbent. Alcohol molecules are trapped in the powder and prevents it from evaporating. The bulk of most alcoholic drinks is water. So add water and you've got alcohol. From what I've read, I believe it will work best with cocktails. Like an orange with vodka. Though beer is plausible too. Malt extract, hops extract but how to make it fizzy?

+Elizabeth Shaw I grew up eating canned mackerel and salmon cooked into patties or made into loaf. I usually eat canned herring and sardines cold, tuna can go either way, and canned salmon is eaten cold or cooked into some other dish or casserole. Generally canned fish I can go either way.

Strange how you can almost tell what countries are communist, socialist and capitalist just by looking at their combat meals. Capitalist meals come with a larger variety and are most times branded and/or packaged by a corporation in the private sector. Socialist seems to have less branding, and communist seems to be produced entirely by the government (who own all means of production, etc.) Thanks for the videos! Looking forward to more.

Charlene Martinez Lol.. yep, this is where things got dicey.
Yeah, both meals, lentils with sausage and that fish (caballa), are quite typical in Spain ( probably they are more common in the central and northern parts of the country ). I used to eat both of them cold, as IMHO they taste better that way ( besides we were given only a few min for meal ). In any case, we were usually issued a big pack that contained breakfast, lunch and dinner boxes; which was kind of an overkill as you could easily make one last for an entire day. Inside each of the breakfast boxes you could find a big pack of crackers that could last for a few days ( besides a tube of delicious condensed milk ), that's why the lunch and dinner boxes don't have any additional crackers. To tell you the truth, to me they tasted better than the meals from the field kitchen.

I've never seen anyone heat a tin of mackerel before here in Ireland either. Seems weird they don't have tinned mackerel in New Zealand.
I always wondered if you couldn't smell the wood burning or if the actual popping sounds didn't concern you in the least! it's still hilarious to watch because then you did it again lol
Nothing like a meal cooked over a real wood fire! Those Spanish rations need to include a fire extinguisher! Ok, that's enough! Kiwi Dude is a good sport for putting this video up! "Are you gonna stick up for me?" Nope! (Heh heh) Thanks for the video, and God bless.

Interesting way of using our rations :D As many others have said, the mackerel, tuna, anchovies, sardines and others are eaten at room temperature. The olive oil is always a hint for that: Think salad ;) It's strange that they used sausage for chorizo in the translation. Hard sausage maybe, or just chorizo, since it's international enough, like pepperoni. The pig fat in there makes the whole mix a quite "hot" casserole and it should be good energy, specially in colder days. And yes, building the stove properly helps, but there's always the option of using bigger ones :D Extra tabs are good to keep around (properly labeled) for trips. Fun to watch! Thanks!
in the US MRE you have a spoon but we are also issued a mess kit with spoon , knife and fork but we always used the spoon from the MRE because you did not have to clean it and ate the food out of the containers they came in for the same reason .
Thanks for making me realize that my Spanish is better than I thought. ;)

mareizaga71 Great stuff. I have a tendency to butcher any attempts at translation, so the best I can hope for during these international reviews is to not offend anyone from the said country too much ;-)
Ok,a lot of spanish people have already told you that you are supposed to eat the canned mackerel (caballa) cold, but i want to tell you about that "apple cream" thing, mainly becouse i already watched a couple of other mre ations reviewers (you are all friends apparently) and none of you got that right. That "apple cream" its no cream at all,in Spain we call that "membrillo" and its not a cream nor a sauce,i think quince jelly is the proper term in english and its made from a fruit by the same name (quince\membrillo),its not ment to be spread (like butter) but its supposed to be eaten "as is",usually we pair it with some good soft cheese, its very, very tasty, but that would be the civilian "high quality" thing not the military "built to last" variant, We serve it in a rather big "slab",much bigger than that ration, you cut small, slim pieces and eat it with bread or cheese, its a very traditional food in Spain, there are many variations and flavors.

Hehehe I enjoyed a lot your video! great review, plus, your daughter´s opinion was very importatn for the final rating. Anyways, just let your know that in the spanish army, these basic meals many times also includes some condensed milk, chocolate and cracks... maybe it depends on the type of meal? A, B,C? Who knows? But I totally agree with you, it would be nice to include a spoon ;) Thanks for sharing! PD: You shouldn´t heat up the fish... tastes way better as cold dish

No problem! I think the "bacon" was more for flavor instead of something you would actually eat. Just out of curiosity did your wife murder you for the cutting board burn?

Sean Diment heat the "bacon"(tocino), pick a knife and a loaf of bread...that´s the way to eat it

Interesting .
read the instructions on how to assemble the stove. to heat the lentils with chorizo. that the stove has to breathe through the bottom. Good thing the wooden board did not catch on. read that everything is well explained on the instruction paper.
Nice one as ever! Phil (uk) :D
