Here's the first of a two-part look at a British 24 Hour Ration. This is the first time I've reviewed one of these, and it was sent to me by ForeignMRE.com . This one is Menu No.3 and the main dishes include Pork Sausages and Beans in Tomato Sauce, Thai Style Chicken Soup and Chicken in Yellow Curry with Rice. It was an excellent ration overall.

Now here is a Tabasco trick I've used. Before your morning coffee, take your Tabasco on it's own -- wakes your taste buds up. After that, even crappy instant coffee tastes good. I asked a diner waitress if she ever saw anyone do that before, she said, "Honey, I've seen everything."

I don't know. I don't want to be pissing or shitting out fire (metaphorically of course). Too much Tabasco burns like hell coming out.

The reason for so many drinks is that these current packaging of rations are for high temperature conflict zones we are currently in. So pleanty of drinks to encourage hydration and less snacks as well as the snacks that are there are non heat stressable such as granola bars and fruit purees. The older packs were build for possible European zone conflicts and were more temperate / cold climate orientated so had more hot drinks such as more coffee / tea / hot chocolate and bullion type drinks. They also included more heat stressable items such as chocolate cookies and chocolate bars.

Thank you for the input! That makes a lot of sense. Since good rations are constantly reviewed/updated/improved it would make more sense to adjust the contents to fit current deployment conditions rather than putting out a completely new ration. If the situation changes and soldiers find themselves in a different climate in the future they can just tweak the components again to match those conditions.

water in the field is normaly distributed by way of 500ml bottles of spring water so you would normaly just pour your drink sachet straight into your bottle so no measuring and drink direct from the bottle as required

Or the tablets can be dropped into camelbaks. The extra drinks are as a result of Iraq and Afghan, hence the lack of chocolate with peanuts, boiled sweets, fruit pouch and cereal bars for eating on the go.

Yeah I just wrote a comment on how they had to change from a temperate climate ration to a less heat stressable one since a lot of the items were melting during the early conflicts in the middle East so they quickly introduced this high temperature tolerable ration. Also during the early days a lot of British troops were suffering heat strokes and dehydration issues hence so many fruit drinks. The old packs had more coffee tea and bullion drinks suitable for colder weather.

Nice a British ration pack This one looks fabulous. I love that the drinks are not so artificially colored. LOL it is soup it is supposed to be liquid. I am really annoyed that I can no longer find here in my neck of the woods in Canada the tuna in the pouches anymore, it was the only way I would eat the tuna, tastes much fresher and less fishy.

That's odd that they don't have the pouches of tuna anymore. The market for them in the U.S. seems to be increasing if anything. They're very easy to find.

gschultz9 I think you are right. As a Brit, I suspect the British Troops would not wish to eat the sausage+beans without bread! Toast is the staple choice when usually having beans or banger'n beans (impossible in the field oc) "Skinheads on a raft" was a much used nickname for beans on toast, here in uk lol.

Great stuff as always, I really think the department of defense could learn from other countries to improve our rations. Many European ones have better food and drinks, and better variety thereof. The brits certainly have more drinks and more food. Also simple things like making our beverage bags stand up as the Canadian ones do would be appreciated by the troops I'm sure.

The typical way to consume the instant coffee in US MRE's is to take hits from the packet washing down with swigs from your camel back while still marching, and the chances of you getting time to use the instant meal heater are the same as getting suddenly Promoted to General mid march. The British MRE actually intends for you to make a little camp fire and cook those foil packs in boiling water wtf. I remember turning a bend after 16 miles and getting handed a tray, then every 5 meters or so a different cook would scoop on it with the last two collecting trash and trays. We did not stop.

It is the UNION FLAG good Sir. It is only the "Union jack" when flown at sea. Don't worry, it's a common error.

Alf Allton That in and of itself is a common error, Union flag or Union Jack can both be officially used in any circumstances.

You've been spoiled by Lipton bottles. Green tea doesn't have to be green. Just like white tea isn't always white

This is pretty much why I tend to avoid doing international rations where I'm not 100% familiar with everything that might be them. I never claimed to be an expert in teas (or ANYTHING in this or any other ration I've ever reviewed). I've never noticed that green teas are actually green in color when I've seen them brewed. as it turns out Typhoo is actually a "blend of several types of fine teas". I wish I had looked that up before saying anything, but if course I didn't know it was in there until I opened it up and saw it.

This makes me ashamed to be British! Not surprising then that the whole world curses English cuisine! I love my country, but this is shameful.......!!! Check out the French ones on "Atomic Shrimps channel", they're bloody glorious!

Sorry to lose you, but there's obviously other reviewers that will be more to your taste. Don't know if you saw the beginning of the video (which WAS the beginning), but I did mention that it was the first time I'd had one of these and that I'd be going into a lot of detail and that it would be a long video. Obviously if that's not what you're looking for you're in the wrong place. Cheers.

I think that the details are great. What you do isn't easy. I of all people understand that. To do a very well informed review takes time and research. Also the money to get the rations. So appreciate your time G.
