For example I could be the same weight as someone, he can max lift more than me. But I train endurance so I can do a lower weight for wayyyy more reps than he could.

He was underestimated the challenge, but he wasn't necessarily wrong there. Some guys train to have the muscle size to look big. Some guys train to maximize strength and not give a dam how they look. Strength and size have a positive correlation but not a directly proportional one.
