Mr. Money Mustache Talks About His Dating Life| Afford Anything Podcast (Audio-Only)

The title says it all. Paula Pant interviews Mr. Money Mustache about his dating life.
We chat about why he wants to date inside the FIRE community (financial independence, retire early) - and whether he’s had any luck.
We discuss the perils of navigating into the dating world after a divorce, which he did at age 43.
And - AHEM - HE’S ON THE APPS. Well, specifically, he’s on one app. And it’s technically not an app, it’s a website. Whatever. HE’S ONLINE DATING, FOLKS. We talk about the difference between flirting in real life vs. online, and he dishes about what he looks for in a dating profile.
Our conversation also covers:
• What’s the point of dating someone inside the FIRE community, anyway? Do you really want to talk about money all day? (Hint: nope)
• Is he a serial monogamist?
• What should you do if one person is more interested in frugality, while the other is into investing?
• Personality, values, communication, chemistry … how can you find that ideal fit?
• How long does it take to figure out if you’re compatible?
• How quickly has he introduced his teenage son to his former (then-current) girlfriends?
• What advice does he share with his son about dating?
Mr. Money Mustache is the pseudonym of Pete Adeney, one of the most prominent figures in the FIRE movement. He co-stars with Paula, Tiffany Aliche and Ross Mac in the 2022 Netflix documentary Get Smart with Money.

Paula really dug deep and put Pete on the spot (in a nice, yet very effective) way! Spending any amount of time with Pete is very uplifting...

Ahh two of my favourite people! I first ran into MMM in 2013. I didn't realise people were into saving/investing like I was. Pete encouraged me to retire (if I wanted to).. So I did in Jan '14. Its been awesome..:)

Details please. How much did you retire with? How much have you been spending per year? How has the portfolio done?

@@BLRsanket I retired with just over $1M and paid for house in 2014. Today the stash is a little over $3.4M . Spending has varied between $35k and $54k. Now I do get some rental income ($24k) and I have been known to do the odd work contract during my retirement which has been some of the most rewarding work I have ever done... Because I dictate the terms and don't have to do it...:).

Ha!!😂🎉 I JUST made a video recently about my success on the FIRE dating site. Just got married in January to my Swedeheart🥰🇸🇪. We met on the site, sparks flew, and 5000 miles couldn’t keep us away.

Fun listen. I'm in a similar boat as MMM. Retiring next month. I definitely agree that you need common core values in a companion. I have to admit though that I've enjoyed my single-dom after a 14 year marriage. I wouldn't have done it any other way as it resulted in two wonderful adult sons and I got to learn firsthand about alcoholism. I've also really got into physical fitness in the last year as I leave the workforce. Wish I had done it years ago. Looking forward to traveling the world now. A dating app may be more focused but I think I'll see what happens just being out in the wild and meeting people around the world.

Great show! The reason, I think, the two women didn't respond to MMM on the dating site could be because they don't believe it's really him. Most likely, they think it's some creep posing as MMM. In online dating there are many weird people and if any alarm bells sound you move away. Maybe MMM can ask for a 'certified' label or something like that to show it's really him.

Computer nerd time: age 0-127 might be an 8 bit signed integer (8 bits gives you 8 0/1 binary numbers of which there are 256 possibilities and signed means one of the bits represents negative (0) or positive (1) thus the range is -128 to 127 (0 is taken as positive) and the computer limits you to positive values.

I'm so signing up for the FIRE dating site. It looks like I could end up with a romantic partner or like minded friends. Why not?!

I'm 37 and financially independent. My life is just as terrible as Pete's, and for you shallow folks, I need to specify: I am not using sarcasm. The journey was far better than the destination, wasn't it?
