If the male lead was attractive, everyone would have validated this relationship purely because of that. Personally as a Sherlock fan, I don’t believe Martins face is ugly at all. But that’s besides the point. If the lead was attractive, it would distract everyone from the point that these relationships are illegal and morally wrong. Stop romanticising this. everybody knows that the relationship isnt supposed to be romanticized... cairo says earlier in the movie that her parents are away and shes sort of isolated. the whole point of the story is blurred lines, cairo didnt know what the line was bc a) shes a child and b) she had no authority in her life other than herself. shes alone and wants a thrill. its not a dark romance, its not even advertised as one. the whole point of the movie is to see how much literature means to her, how her whole life revolves around it. she chose henry miller as her favorite author ffs, poor girl probably romanticizes everything she can to feel something. she ruined his life because it was her first time feeling rejected after finally feeling something real. people who romanticize the story dont understand it. miller took advantage of a lonely girl, knowing it was wrong.
