If you don’t live in the US this skit may be confusing. He taught in the inner city which means his students were mostly non-white. Some African-Americans have names their parents thought sounded African. Some have names that look, traditionally American if there is such a thing, but they pronounce it in a weird way. He appears to be in his old mindset of saying the names. I also assume the show is poking fun at inner city schools not having many student clubs since he seemed to not be familiar with them. And then he let the student with the child out of class because he would have been familiar with that in the inner city.

@xraysteve, inner city schools may not have as many, but they do have student clubs. The play on words was that he heard "clubs" and in inner city schools, club is used primarily for an actual club one goes to for dancing or kicking it. We typically call our student clubs teams. So, the chess team, glee team, etc. The play on names is that he's pronouncing regular American/European names as if he would the play on Black American names.

Also I think comedically criticizing wh*te subs who go into Intercity schools and try to tell the students there that their parents are pronouncing their names wrong.

When I subbed i would have the kids tell me their names when I took attendance for this reason and others. It was also a good way to prevent kids who were not in the class wanting to hang out with friends answering "present" when absent students' names were called. One day I was talking to regular teachers about the weird names we encounter. One of them mentioned their confusion when they encountered "Orangello." She stood there confused before finally saying, "Orange Jello." The exasperated kid responded, "It's Oraan-Gello."

What is astounding to me is that these students (actors) were able to keep a straight face ever while this skit was being shot. I would have been on the floor! LOL! Thanks for sharing!

That's why they have editors and multiple cameras rolling. Do a bunch of takes and cut out all the laughter, then splice the best bits together so it looks like one take, while making sure continuity of posture and props is maintained. Good actors will be able to keep a straight face for a few seconds before losing it so the editors have something to work with.

Plus, a lot of black children have first names with apostrophes in them, hence this teacher's assumptions on their pronunciation.

1. I taught high school for 29 years in Hawaii. 2. Always had trouble with some names (had three Abcde’s) 3. YOU NEVER CORRECT SOMEONE ON HOW TO PRONOUNCE THEIR NAME. They have lived with all their lives, they know how to pronounce it

I have a nephew named Aaron & this is a running joke in my family to call him "A-A-Ron". When he got his driver's license my sister (his mom) checked to see if the personalized license plate for the car = A A Ron was available & it was--but he refused to let her order it. I guess we think it's funnier than he does. 🤣

They have the most ridiculous names in that sketch, and then out of nowhere the last player introduced is Dan Smith from BYU. I was dead when I heard that one. 😂🤣

I remember back in the 90’s some African American kids would pronounce names in that way and insist others do as well. So not much of a stretch to think that a teacher who taught in the inner city to be conditioned to pronounce names that way.

I thought this skit was one of funniest things I have ever seen. I later have learned they had or have a tv show. I sent it to many friends. I don't think they saw the humor.
