    Thank you for so many amazing videos! The best tutorials and easiest I have come across. It makes it so much easier to just pop onto your channel for whatever I need to know or learn rather than searching forever (it seems) :) on KZread. With such a vast variety of information, it can get frustrating trying to find exactly what you are looking for. Nice job!

    My word that’s a gorgeous leaf!!! I also love the idea of hanging these for an organic wall art composition along an otherwise boring fence or wall. What a great backdrop they would be with lanterns scattered amongst them. You’re so creative….and generous with your knowledge. Bless you 🙏🌈👑👑👑👑

    Thank you so much for taking your time to make these videos. My friend wanted to make a leaf waterfall for her pool. She spent HOURS watching video until she found yours. She said, "You can tell that he really knows his stuff, so I want to try it like his." So, that is what we did. We have 3 leaves (small, medium and large). Being our 1st time, we do have a lot of little bitty air spots on them, but overall, we are extremely please, and thankful to have your videos to assist us!!

    Thank you for sharing your knowledge on leaf casting. I have recently tried making my own, I could use more practical. One thing I have done to help me release the leaf from concrete is to brush the leaf with some kind of oil before I put cement on. I used olive oil the last time because that is what I had on hand. I am enjoying working with cement.

  • @mrconcreteartisan

    @mrconcreteartisan

    3 жыл бұрын

    Thanks for the kind words.It does take a fair bit of practice ,just keep plugging along.The reason I don't personally use oil ,is that if it pools in places ,it has a retarding effect on the concrete cure .It will be quite visible.The other reason is ,it can interefere with painting and finishing later.But if you find it helps you ,carry on.

    Thanks for sharing your beautiful creations and processes with us. I am sure going to try this, as i have lately discovered the joys of playing with cement. I started casting a few planters, still small ones from cement. I use a lot of throw-away plastic containers for my molds and am getting pretty good results, and a few compliments also for the stuff i made so far. Today i went beserk and made 2 decent sized ones, one with 5 "containers" and one with 4. This would be a perfect flow-out from what i am currently playing with. Thanks again.

    To make de molding easier, I think I would use some cooking or baking spray on the backside of the leaf before adding the concrete. Excellent video.

    @mrconcreteartisan

    That's a topic that comes up all the time .Cooking spray has as many downsides as up ,that's why I personally don't use it.Spray oil tends to pool in places and has an undesirable effect on the finish.As well it leaves a residue that must be removed before painting or staining. Hi and Thank You Sir for your Awesome Detailed tutorial. 💖 What is the advantage of "wet cure" vs just letting concrete items simply dry out? I'm starting to learn to do concrete crafts for my home and would like to learn the advantages of the slower cure. Thank you kindly. 👍😁

  • @mrconcreteartisan

    @mrconcreteartisan

    6 жыл бұрын

    Good morning,without getting into a bunch of boring technical mumbo jumbo,I'll try to make it simple.The wet cure is a process to get the strongest tensile strength for your concrete,keeping it out of direct hot sunlight and wet ,help to create conditions to give you the strongest product.Because the leaves are relatively thin ,you want to create the strongest product possible.Direct sun is the enemy of all concrete .

  • @mrconcreteartisan

    @mrconcreteartisan

    2 жыл бұрын

    Yes, unfortunately I sell these commercially ,and must be practically bullet proof ,so to speak. As well as of the highest quality. These are sold in Canada ,and must be able to survive considerable freeze /thaw conditions .Something that Vinyl patch or a cement all product just doesn't offer. I just can't afford to take the "easy" route I'm afraid. Our reputation is front of mind always! Hope this answers your question.

    @@mrconcreteartisan thanks, yes I was wondering how you can get it so thin on the edges without breaking or snapping . I just bring mine in for the winter, but I find sometimes my acrylic paint will chip after awhile. I let them cure indoors for at least 3 days before painting and coat them with a cement sealer. Not sure what’s going on. Any ideas? Btw love ur leaves!!

  • @mrconcreteartisan

    @@lisairvin6615 I just feather the mix outwards toward the leaf edge. Try letting them cure for three weeks or longer.Make sure you leaf has no oil or any other residue on it before painting, the paint wont stick around if there is any kind of residue present.Also let your paint cure for a few days as well before sealing. Hope this helps ,let me knpow how you make out.

    We just recently retired, we were based out of Vernon British Columbia. The price is a funny thing ,it all has to do with your customer base and what your market can bare. It will also depend on your skill level and final product appearance. Once there is a good demand for your efforts you can raise the price accordingly. Factors we took for pricing *Painted or stained or raw *Degree of difficulty *Size of finished leaf *Type of leaf (rare) All these would be taken into consideration. All I can give you is a ball park ,From $25.00 the the highest was $2500.00

    You inspired my friend & I to try our hands at making leaves, which we did a couple of days ago. Thanks so much!!! However, I do have a few questions ...how many days do you rewet the unmolded leaf so it cures well? I have sprayed mine with water twice a day for the past 2 days & recovered with the plastic. I think you referred to this as wet curing. I couldn't find the poly fibers to add to the mix or the dry powder colorant either. Also do you seal your leaves before applying the acrylic paint and how soon can they be painted after unmolding? I'm in the US any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thanks again.

    You can keep spraying once a day for ten days or so is good ,keep them out of the sun. Here is a link for pigment and fibres in the U.S. on line sales www.buddyrhodes.com/ . Seal your leaves after you have painted them.Go ahead and paint after the 10 days , some folks wait a month ,but I think that's over kill. the main goal is to have fun with your projects ,I hope you are ,and oh be careful very addicting 🤣

    Beautiful work! What is the average price for your leafs?

  • @mrconcreteartisan

    @mrconcreteartisan

    2 жыл бұрын

    That's a real tough one to answer.You can only charge what you think your local market can bare. Also depends on the quality of the work,craftsmanship,materials used ,as well as the rarity of the leaf that is cast . Size also can be a determining factor. We always had a large selection of various leaves at different price points to appeal to all regardless of budget. Hosta leaf could go for $25 , Painted Gunnera for $350 and the most we ever charged and sold was $ 2,500.

    What do you use for the color? Do you suggest adding an iron oxxid pigment to the mix or do you use a special kind of paint after your mold is complete?

  • @mrconcreteartisan

    @mrconcreteartisan

    7 жыл бұрын

    You can use iron oxide pigment ,I have in the past and still use a green oxide.Takes a bit to get % right.I do paint a lot using any High quality exterior latex paint.Acrylic craft paints work remarkably well.You must seal your project after both oxide and paint applications.

    Will the edges of the leaf break off it you accidentally hit it against something? Or will it not chip or break?

    The leaf in general is pretty resilient ,although yes, the edges can get damaged if you are careless when handling.No different than a ceramic or concrete pot,care must be used,

    Help! I just cast my first leaf...an elephant ear....and it came out absolutely beautifully.... I just flipped it after 24 hrs...had it setting on my pile of sand and was going around the edges with a Dremel until it died (battery operated), then was just finishing up with a serrated knife and apparently pushed too hard for the lack of sand under the sides and it SPLIT!...right down the middle. :((( It was practically perfect and I'm so bummed out. I'm wondering if there's any way to repair it. I guess I'll let it cure and do some research. Thinking of maybe flipping it back down, with sand supporting it, and "painting on some Rapid-Set Cement All ....maybe with some type of reinforcing material.... Maybe my first leaf can be a "kintsugi" leaf :(? :)? I should mention that I used Quickrete Vinyl Patch (nothing else added) in case that makes any difference.

  • @mrconcreteartisan

    @mrconcreteartisan

    Wow ! Bummer, could have been the vinyl patch.Did you have any fibers or reinforcement in there?Rapid set isn't great for that purpose.Glue it back together using some PL premium or ultra construction adhesive.Works great.

  • @macoeur1122

    @macoeur1122

    o.k. two more questions... :) 1. What do you think about gluing it back together with one of the construction adhesives you mentioned... then coat the back with a concrete bonding adhesive and then add another 1/2 of the same vinyl patch? I think I was probably asking too much of the stuff. It was only around 1/2 to 3/4" thick..(thought I made it thicker along the ridge/center, but the depth of the leaf (spine?) apparently "encroached" on the supposed extra thickness....And the leaf was pretty huge...and no, I didn't add any reinforcment...probably should have....(and should have shaved off some of the spine thickness.... I started over and made one quite a bit thicker while the first one (now two:) is curing. Second attempt slumped over the edge of the leaf by around 1" (sheesh!...a lot of "learning experiences") 2. What do you think the best tool is for grinding down that inch?... and can this be done after it's cured?

  • @mrconcreteartisan

    @mrconcreteartisan

    5 жыл бұрын

    MaCoeur Gosh sorry I'm late . # 1 Yes you could ,but only after the glue has cured a couple days.You can also lay a piece of 1/4 or 1/2 inch hardware cloth ( wire) on top then your patch. #2 Seems like you answered a lot of your own questions there. If you 're getting a lot of slump like that ,good chance your mix is far too wet .You can get it off in the first hour after you've finished,after that don't touch it.Wait a couple of days and grind it of with a masonry disc on an angle grinder . Careful ,safety first ,goggles etc...

    Thank you so much for your advice. Just found out I can rent an angle grinder at Home Depot so I won't have to buy one (I don't plan on letting this happen again) So the first one was too thin...and the second one, because it was thicker (and therefore, heavier), slumped down when I wasn't lookin'! Next time, I'll go back and check on it after about 1/2 hr and cut off excessive edges. Thought I had the mixture pretty dry, but maybe I'll try just a bit dryer next time. Your make it look so easy! I think I can salvage both with a little extra attention. :)
