Shortly after this speech Churchill had his portrait taken by the famous photographer Yosef Karsh. The portrait is considered the definitive photographic portrait of Churchill. Karsh asked Churchill to remove his cigar. He did remove it but he gave a stern grimace towards Karsh. The photo was snapped and the rest is photographic history.

There was also a second photo taken, once Churchill had recovered from the loss of cigar ! and then smiled to the camera. It shows a very humane side to Churchill. At the height of all the pressure and stress he could still relax into a simple gesture of friendliness and hope.

I think that Churchill took Canadian war service for granted. He saw us as colonials who should automatically follow the "mother country".
