Nah. 1992 there was a lot of hard throwers. Clemens, smoltz, Ryan. If you were throwing 85 in the majors. You were definitely a soft tosser. Like Jamie Moyer or charlie lebrandt. The average fastball velo has only increases a couple mph over last few decades.

@@sethtate2079 Baseball measures the speed of the ball differently now than before. In this time of baseball it was by use of a variety of speedguns. They used the first iteration of a speedgun (basically converted from police speedguns) from Decatur Technologies and then the JUGS speedgun as well. The Decatur gun would measure closer to the plate, where velocity is tailing off while the JUGS gun would measure closer to the release point and get a more accurate reading of the speed out of the hand. Scouts referred to the Decatur gun as the "slow gun" and the JUGS gun as the "fast gun". So you would have variances in measurement. Then, as more improved models came out, the Decatur gun was essentially obsolete and the JUGS gun was then considered the "slow gun". Now they measure it with even more accurate technologies and track the speed of the ball the moment it leaves the pitchers' hand, therefore creating a more accurate reading. Long story short, the guy was probably throwing a 90+ mph pitch but the speedgun used was near the plate, therefore measuring the velocity as it slowed. Today, this "85 mph" fastball would register roughly at 93 mph. It just depends on where the pitch is being measured. Really the average speed of fastballs hasn't changed a whole lot in 30ish years, just the technologies that measure it.
