Great video, thanks! I agree 100%, it's about level's of investment... level 1 - if all you have is a beat machine, use the mixing capabilities within the device level 2 - drag&drop or USB audio into your DAW (w/gain staging), get good quality plugins, that mimic an analog signal chain (pre-amp, EQ, compressor on tracks, eq, compressor, reverb, tape saturation on master bus) level 3 - analog outs into an audio interface with good pre-amps, then repeat the DAW setup above level 4 - analog outs into analog hardware, then into your audio interface and DAW I'm running my Akai Force's 4 analog outs, into a 500 series lunch box with 4 preamps: Camden 500x2 (also use as a stereo pair for my beat machines with L/R outs), 1073 clone, SSL SiXCH, then into my audio interface and DAW. I'll probably expand my 500 series at some point (tracking compressor, mastering eq, compressor, etc.) the challenge is finding units that I'll consistently use.

If i drag and drop or if I create the track in the box, I still run out through a Warm Audio WA73EQ (Neve clone) and a Golden Age 2A compressor (LA-2A clone), back into the DAW. I print the audio file with the IK Multimedia tape emulation. It sounds amazing! Nevertheless, I would tell anyone the main goal is to just make great music! The greatest piece of gear is between your ears! Great video!

And I’ve heard that people have had issues with the Xs phantom power also the Akai cheaper out on components and they have hot jumper wires that can fry the whole unit. Thank you E A Ski. I do not have expensive outboard gear, but I can hear my stuff better. No MPC GANG here, just Good Music Club. I think you are hitting the nail on the head. Most guys I know making professional music are 100% digital. The sample never leaves the digital realm. The mixes are all done in the box. Any mixer out there can get any sound from these files. They have their plugin chain and can recreate anything. Serban Ghenea has been in the box for ever now. So the MPC to me is more about workflow than sound as sound has been dealt with in the box. I just thought everyone understood this? I think the outcome of all this convertor stuff is that new guys are going to come in and think they need converters and to track everything through outboard gear etc, And then there going to come to same conclusion that we all did 20yrs ago, its not worth it lol. Dealing with latency, lining up drums, no recall, noise, expense etc.. when a kid who puts their head in it can get the same sound as you on an iPad with logic.. nah. Skate to where the puck is not where it was.

Right all that talk really does is create an itch to spend more money.. when the reality is most in the community have the main piece already... and the secondary realm of this battle with this "sound" talk is... what is the music actually sounding like....? For all these people to already have the DAW and or box... the music sound pretty much the same to ass... why? Everybody is merging to the same metronome... when the reality is "what u eat don't make me shit." If everybody going for the same set up it let's me know every one is copying or making the same music... and when I hear here conversations it's like "but how does that make what I do better." I been doing things my way for over the last 10 yrs within the confines of what i have...and now this is a "thing." When just getting that main piece i.e fl.. or an sp.. mv.. mpc.. was all that mattered once upon a time.... then next what is the musical DNA one comes up with.... none of these conversations really mean nothing if people making the same music... lol

I find the best way to track is by recording from the MPC software or as a plug-in into the DAW. Maybe with the MPC in vintage mode. This is notably different than just drag and drop BUT also avoids the sound being messed up by subpar outboard gear unless you have a 1073 there which most of us don’t

I use song mode but I mute everything except one track for each sound in the beat, so what I am saying is if I need just the kick stem I'd mute all other tracks and then export the whole song as a wave but it would just be the kick. Then do that for the snare high hat etc all as wave stems they will line up in the daw you are using separately. Hope that helps someone peace. ✌🏽 😮

Using a modern MPC by tracking to the DAW or bouncing wouldn't make much of difference between these so called modern MPCs have weak converters to began with. They lack the sonics of what the 3000 was known for. You are better of just bouncing them and then run the stems through analog gear and then back into th DAW to phatten up the drums. I got away from MPCS and hardware sequencing all together now that I do everything in Studio One these days. I have a Hybrid setup with 5 hardware sound modules connected to my MOTU MIDI interface that I use in conjunction with my modern soft synths like Omnisphere, Ana, Keyscape, Native Instruments. The best of both worlds hardware and software synths. I use the Atom drum pad controller that replaced my MPC5000 I route the outs of my drums from my DAW I to my analog outboard gear.

So if DJ Quik, Just Blaze, E.A. Ski gave me their drum sounds they already processed through analog gear, compression, eq, etc. I still should run it through more gear on my way to my DAW? Yall act like the MPC degrade the sound once its in the machine. Why should I run it thru more Outboard Gear if 1) I have sample packs that been ran through Outboard Gear and 2) if I ran it through analog gear as I sampled the sound? I can just export my track the new way. No need to run it through more gear on the way into the DAW. You still have to mix the entire song, vocals, etc. in the DAW. At that point its in the DAW, use plugins to finish the mix. Even Dr.Dre was using plugins to get his mix right

How to record trackout into a daw with new mpc. What gear i need

  • @voodoohex72
    @voodoohex72 Жыл бұрын

    1) most good sound packs have already been processed with outboard analog gear. 2) if the converters are so bad then why use the 8 outs if the packs have already been processed? The 8 outs have the Digital to analog conversion of the said bad converters. So for someone to say the converters are bad and then in the next sentence ask you why are you not using the outs is beyond comical. 3) exporting to the DAW is a LOSSLESS process meaning there is no conversion happening so the potential for degraded audio is ZERO. 4) BONUS:: you can change/upgrade the converters in your newer MPCs by simply hooking up a class compliant USB audio interface of your choice to the usb connection on the MPC. Once you do that and select the new audio interface in the MPC, the MPC converters are now completely bypassed and the conversion now happens in that audio interface.

My first MPC was a MPC 2000 and then I got a 2500, I hated fiddling with Midi & SMPTE Timecode. Your MPC, hooked up to two or three external synth modules, then tracking all of your drums, plus the synth modules into you DAW was was tedious. It always took 2 or 3 passes. I'm convinced this is the reason why people used two tracks so often. Unless I'm going to tape, I'm never going back, I love this new workflow.

That means you can transfer 8 instruments on a single pass. Most legacy keyboards have at least 4 individual outputs. Thats 4 mono instruments or 2 stereo instruments on a single pass. If you have 24 tracks (16 in MPC 2000 Classic and 8 in a legacy keyboard). Thats just two motherf*&&& passes. You only have to hear your weak af song twice to transfer all the music. I prefer tracking my mpc or hardware synths into my DAW instead of drag and drop. To be honest, this is probably because I’m an Old Head and that is what I’ve been doing since the early 90’s. I have fortune of having 16 analog inputs which allows me to have all my synths and samplers connected. This makes my tracking take less time because every input is setup and I don’t have to switch. The most important thing is to do what works best for you to be creative and get the sound in your head out for others to enjoy.

I find that work flow extremely slow esp when you have to mute and solo every part. One of reasons why I moved away from hardware sequencing all together. The DAW is so much more powerful than any standalone hardware made today. I have been sequencing on hardware for well over a decade and finally made the change to move back to DAW sequencing given my MPC5000 was already broken for the past three year's. What makes the DAW experience more superior to an onboard sequencer on hardware is flexibility, and Editing. I own 5 hardware sound modules with all the MIDI connected to my MOTU MIDI interface and the audio outs going into my patchbay. My patchbay is connected to my MOTU 828es AVB interface with multiple i/O channels. In Studio One I can open up a project and start recording my midi tracks and peice them together into an entire song structure in with in minutes. It takes to long to construct a beat into a song format verse, hook, pre chorus bridge.. with all the tediously menus and buttons on a tiny as screen that can take 30 mins to an hour to do. In the DAW I can record all of my sound modules audio outputs all at once with one take each in their own separate channel as multi track STEMs and the beat is done. I can properly name each MIDI track the instrument name or patch I used. You can't do that on hardware. When you save a MIDI file on hardware all you get is just the midi notes recorded but no info on what patch or program you use. You basically have to take pictures of the hardware screen in order to know what instrument patch you used slowing down the process of recalling an instrument. You can't name your tracks with proper names on hardware when you are saving your project either due to the lack of qwerty keyboard. No search feature or nothing.

I’d rather export out the mpc explode all the tracks. Vs tracking into my Apollo. For a couple reasons. 1. I’m not relying on any compressor made for the mpc’s on a record so I’m going to be mixing in the box. 2. I’d rather save my inputs, first which I do have 14, for my keyboards, my dj mixer, Rhodes, 808. 3. I don’t have and external pre amps.

Great Love, I think the conversation are great, but it is just an Overkill IMOP Phat and Warm is Great, you do not here Dark Child, Q. Jones, Teddy Riley, Babyface, JJ/ Lewis, Sweat, BM Cox, B Mcknight and Y Guru these producers know about sound. They use the MPC's. They have not even addressed the MPC converter issue. Tracking and using your gear full capabilities, You touch on something that is the truth. 😊❤

The vast majority of those Producer's abandoned the MPC including Scott Storch. Pretty much everyone is in the DAW these days now that music industry shifted. Making beats on Standalone hardware is now a dated workflow in this era. I don't recall Quincy Jones using an MPC. He used one of those Roger Linn drum machines but it wasn't Akai.

I think the MPC workflow or sequencing MIDI on hardware is a bit dated given that conventional computers are way more powerful than any standalone hardware today. Latency is no longer an issue either these days esp if you have the right interface. I just moved off of hardware sequencing all together and went Hybrid. I threw my MPC 5000 away in the trash that was an unreliable disasterist piece of junk i ever owned. It sat broke for 3 years before finally ditching it. Bi switched out my workstation keyboards with all rack mound sound modules versions of them now that I own 5 different sound moduels as my legacy hardware Rompler Synthesizer collection. I own pretty much ever sound module used on all 90s and early 2000s Hip Hop and R&B. I now use Studio One Pro as my sequencer as I can mix and match my modern soft synths like Omnisphere with my hardware synths with in Studio One using the best of both worlds. My Presonus Atom drum pad controller replaced My MPC5000 and I now downsized to two Roland Midi controllers. I use all MOTU hardware for my interfacing as I have my hardware synths connected to my MOTU MIDI interface while my 828ES I use as my main Studio interface. I have near zero latency. I also own quite a bit of analog gear so that I can run my mixes through.

@@andremiller1566 Workstation keyboards today are for gigging musicians. Not alot of Producer's buy those anymore these days. I use to be a gigging musician myself as a former Gospel musician in the church that played the keyboards back on 2010. I see no need of a MOTIF or Fantom keyboard for production in the studio these hese why I have I have the Fantom-XR and a motif rack es. I have my MOTIF ES6 keyboard in the closet that's been retired that I once used for the church and production.

I feel that I don't need any outboard gear to make a decent sounding beat or song, my MPC's especially the MPC X and the Key 61, they have enough plug-ins to do a professional job on my songs, but then again everybody has their own set of eardrums and their own opinion on what sounds good and what doesn't sound good, sound is like food some people like it some people don't.

I find it kind of funny that everybody talks about making their sound thick and loud and punchy, and nobody talks about making a song with nice chords and some syncopated beats and counterpoints and musical stuff. Music is more than just loud and crunchy Sound, if you want crunchy sounds eat a bowl of cornflakes, but if you want to make good music, create a groove a Vibe a feeling a chord structure with harmonies that's music, not hissy crunchy 1980s 12 bit bullshit.
