This should be a common sense rule even in countries like Kenya that follow the British Systems. Once a public officer is accused of committing a crime, he/she should first leave the office but only resume when cleared by the courts.

That's a lie. Mlima is full of paupers, some of whom know not where the next meal will come from. Bear in mind that until Devolution came into being, (even though it involves only 15% or so of the national revenue), the Govt could decide to determine how much funds are channelled to different regions of the country. The flow of funds tended to be higher if your region was considered to be close the President. The Executive headed by the President would also stifle the flow of funds to areas considered to be hostile to the Govt. Therefore some areas were given undue advantage over others. That's the reality of our past and it will take more than a decade or two to correct those wrongs. A large number of Kikuyu villagers are just village drunkards imbibing local brew and wasting away as time goes by.

Read how Malaysia turned around to be the kind of economy it became within one generation. It was corrupt all along. Then some leader came along and killed corruption. Corruption is not impossible to tame. Any leader who wants to ascend to power with no proposal on how he/she will tame corruption has no business in aspiring to a position of leadership. A badly leaking container will always loose all the water that is stored in it. There is no point growing an economy if it will all haemorrhage in a flash.

@@saiddagane3527 Raila has not been in the system for the better part of his political life. Both Ruto and Rigathi have been in the system for a longer period than Raila. Secondly I was discounting the statement that a country that finds itself deep in corruption cannot pull itself out of it. Corruption is a behaviour and all behaviours are learnt. What is learnt can be unlearnt, and the ensuing vacuum be filled with new behaviours. It has been done elsewhere and it can be done here, if there is will.

They say when whites came to Africa at night and left before dawn,they concluded that Africa is a dark continent. Mbadi now wants to suggest that because he doesn't know how to transact in billions,then anybody else that does know can only be a thief!! He needs to know that what he knows is not the standard of what the right thing to do to get money is. He should instead court Gachagua very well and he teaches him how instead of thinking that he should be the richest bse he has served for 26yrs.

And Rigathi was not charged with your imagined "offence of of investing". He was charged by DPP after investigations by DCI. Rigathi's alleged offences are in the public domain, and investing is not one of them.

What you earn can be a subject of debate if there are indications that it was earned corruptly, which is basically stealing public funds. That is what EACC, ARA and sometimes even DCI deal with everyday. And as such motions take place, the public must actively engaged in discussing such events. Alleged and actual theft of public funds is a matter of public interest.

Stop stupidly profiling an issue along tribal lines. I have come across many Kikuyus who have tried their hand in business without success. The subject under discussion is not on business acumen between Luos and Kikuyus! The discussion is on whether a person with an active case in court should be permitted to run for public office. And to be specific, the person of interest is Rigathi. It is not Luos who charged Rigathi in court with the offence of corruption. That was the DPP. In modern societies such debates do not even arise. A public officer just resigns when faced with such charges. But in Kenya, what follows next? Nothing but shallow tribal profiling of the debate to a point of irrelevance.

Has Raila been called upon to account procedurally and failed to do so? Gachagua is a suspect on matters related to corruption. He has a case in court. He is not in court because he is a billionaire. He is in court because of cash that came into his possession in a manner that smells like corruption.

It is not Mbadi who took Rigathi to court with corruption charges. That was DPP after investigations by DCI. And he was not taken to court because he is a billionaire. He is charged in court because there were suspicious transactions in his account over some period. Being a billionaire is not and cannot be an offence. It is the suspected theft of public funds that, if proven, would constitute an offence. The debate should really whether a person who is facing charges in court should run for public office. In other jurisdictions, such a debate does not even arise, because such debates we're concluded a long time ago and it is a matter of formality that seekers of public office are expected to be beyond reproach, like Ceaser's wife. Let's raise the bar and stop entertaining the idea of allowing suspects to seek public office.
